1 KAW DISTRICT SPRING CAMPOREE BACK TO BASICS April Leader Guide Kaw District Camporee & OA TAP OUT Kenneth W. Bernard Community Park Gilman Road Lansing, Kansas Contacts: Drew Warninghoff - awarninghoff@gmail.com Larry Strickland - outdoors1963@gmail.com Janell Neal, Staff Advisor - Janell.Neal@scouting.org
2 Camporee Hosts: Drew Warninghoff, Amanda Dickinson, Rick Dembowski, Glenda Noel, Larry Strickland, Janell Neal, and Travis Dale Registration & Fees Registration is open to all Boy Scouts, and Venturers, for the entire weekend. Registration includes access to all events, supplies, and camporee patch. The cost is $8.00 per person. We request that units pre-register. Parking Vehicle and trailers are only allowed on paved surfaces, in the parking lot, or the entrance. Gear and equipment will need to be carried to camp site. Scouts will walk to campsite. Check-in Procedures Please plan to arrive between 5:00-8:00 PM. Registrations at the Administrative Tent. Please send one adult in with completed roster to register upon arrival at camp. Meals, Restrooms and Water Troops are responsible for their own meals (recommend a packed lunch for Saturday). Restrooms are the porta potties placed in various locations around camp. A water trailer will be available in camp. Troops should also bring water with them. Camp Headquarters The headquarters will be at the Administration Tent near the turnaround area. The headquarters will handle all meeting, administrative, program, and health needs. Headquarters will be staffed 24 hours a day and during the events in case of an emergency. All camp staff can be contacted through the camp headquarters. More details at registration. Check-out Procedures Camp staff will be in Administration tent. Remember a scout is clean, please police your campsite and leave it better then when you arrived. Check out is from 9:00-11:00 AM on Saturday morning. Coordinate with the Headquarters if a Troop will check out before that time. Adult Leadership: It is the policy of the Boy Scouts of America that trips and outings may never be led by only one adult. Two registered adult leaders or one registered adult leader and a parent or guardian of a scout, one of whom must be 21 years of age, are required for all trips and outings. Adults must have a current on-line Youth Protection training.. If you do not have two deep leadership, contact any of the camp directors and we will combine your troop with another to provide the required leadership. Events/Scoring: Not all patrols are even, so units are recommended form patrols no larger than seven (7) Scouts per patrol. Scores will be averaged based of the number of boys in the patrol. 2
3 Saturday Service Project: A camp wide one-hour service project will take place immediately after flag. Troops are requested to bring gloves, rakes, shovels, brooms and wheel barrels to distribute the mulch in the flower bed area. Requirements completed: Time: 60 minutes 1) Tenderfoot: 7b (Completes requirement) 2) Second Class: 8e (1 hour of 2 required service hours) 3) First Class: 9d (1 hour of 3 required service hours) 4) Star: 4 (1 hour of 6 required service hours) 5) Life: 4 (1 hour of 6 required service hours) Tapout instructions: Leaders are encouraged to have Order of the Arrow (OA) youth in their unit to assist with the Tapout. This has several affects that benefit each unit. The youth not elected will be inspired by the dedication and those who volunteer will feel good to be a part of something that directly effects their unit. Youth may reach out to Kyle Lauber with Troop 165 for details. He will be introduced at the leaders meeting. The Tapout will occur immediately following the Saturday night campfire. Following the campfire, we will ask all Scouts and Scouters stay for the Tapout whether they are in Order of the Arrow or not. Family members are also encouraged to stay for the Tapout if they attend the campfire. Participation in the Tapout ceremony is not mandatory; however, participation supports the OA program, encourages new Scouts to remain active so they may be future OA members, and supports those Scouts and Scouters whoare being honored for their cheerful spirit by being called out to become OA candidates. The ceremonialists will ask everyone to form into two lines in a horseshoe. Scouts/Scouters in the Order of Arrow and those not in the Order of the Arrow should stand in two or more lines. Only the unit leader will remain standing behind his unit. The leader will hold up a sash behind those elected to signal the ceremonialist to pick this candidate. Leaders have been given a list of their elected youth at their unit election. Please bring this with you! After all the OA candidates have been picked, they will be led to an isolated area away from the campfire for further instruction. Candidates will be led back to their unit. While the OA candidates are being given instruction, a call for current Ordeal members will be announced. Those who are Ordeal will step forward to form a line. They will be led away to an isolated area to discuss sealing their membership to become Brotherhood members. Ordeal members will be led back to their unit. Those remaining in line should be Scouts/Scouters not called out along with current Brotherhood and Vigil members of the Order of the Arrow if they are not assisting with the Tapout. Those remaining will be dismissed back to camp. It will be dark at the time of this ceremony. Please instruct everyone to bring flashlights to the campfire to help assist their way safely back to your group. 3
