1 Volume 7 Issue # 02 2 nd Quarter, 2011 Division 6 SEMPER GUMBY Award Presented The prestigious, coveted DIVISION 6 SEMPER GUMBY AWARD was presented for only the second time. The Coast Guard motto is Semper Paratus, meaning Always Ready ; however, as we have all learned, we must remain Semper Gumby or Always Flexible as well. LCDR Michael Kahle receives the DIVISION 6 SEMPER GUMBY AWARD from Wally Smith, DCDR-6 THE DIVISION 6 SEMPER GUMBY AWARD was presented to Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Michael Kahle, Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Monterey. The presentation was made by Wally Smith, DCDR-6 at the Division 6 meeting on 09 April. With the recent presentation to Station Monterey of the Robert Phifer Trophy at D-TRAIN, the relationship that exists between the Flotillas of Division 6 and Station Monterey is well documented. University in the Masters Program majoring in Public Administration. We wish him only the best and will always value the time we in the Auxiliary have shared with him. - Wally Smith, DCDR-6 Public Affairs Event at Defense Language Institute Monterey, California At the invitation of Coast Guard Station Monterey, Division 6 participated in a public affairs event at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey. The event was scheduled to coincide with National Safe Boating Week and was offered to all at DLI and their families. The event included representation by the California Highway Patrol, Dept. of Fish & Game, American Medical Response (AMR), and numerous other agencies. The Auxiliary booth was located directly in front of the tow vehicle next to the 25-foot Response Boat from Station Monterey (the 25 ). The Auxiliary booth was staffed by Bill Dodson, FC 64; Jane Smith, FC & FSO-PA 6-10; Wally Smith, DCDR-6; Scott Galloway, VFC 67; and Mike Dioszegi, 67. Tammera Badano, 6-10, staffed the AMR booth aft of the CG 25 and taught Community CPR. LCDR Kahle will be leaving Station Monterey this June. He is being transferred to Washington, D.C. where he will be enrolled at George Washington USCG AUXILIARY DIVISION 6 2 nd QUARTER, 2011 Page 1

A big Bravo Zulu was extended to the Auxiliary for supporting the event. - Wally Smith, DCDR-6 National Safe Boating Week Activities in Monterey Jane Smith, FC 6-10, ready to answer visitors questions. Many visitors stopped by the booth and the 25 and numerous boating safety pamphlets were handed out. National Safe Boating Week in Monterey, CA kicked off with the Defense Language Institute (DLI) Safety Day on May 27th. DLI Installation Safety Director John R. Rice invited involvement from the community, and Coast Guard Station Monterey participated with the coordination of BM1 Marcus Percy. In addition to other duties, BM1 Percy trailered the 25-foot Response Boat Small (RB-S) for public viewing. Our Auxiliary team, led by Wally Smith (DCDR-6), set up a table, canopy, and display with literature and a sampling of personal flotation devices (PFDs) to highlight safe boating to our military and international community. Members of the armed forces including Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines were in attendance. Although no formal count is available, attendance is estimated at well over 1,000. Memorial Day weekend celebrations in Monterey included the annual Ke Kai O Uhane outrigger canoe races which took place in the Monterey harbor along Del Monte Beach. The Coast Guard Auxiliary provides support and guardianship to the participants who, in some races, travel as far as a mile. Auxiliarists donated their time and their facilities to provide support. Matt Wall, Mark McLaughlin, Wally Smith and many others put in many hours in the name of safety and coastal protection. USCG AUXILIARY DIVISION 6 2 nd QUARTER, 2011 Page 2

3 Coast Guard Auxiliary Facility on patrol. A Coast Guard Auxiliary booth was set up alongside the Monterey Harbor Master s office with signs, pamphlets, materials, and Auxiliary personnel to meet and greet the public. An award for the Auxiliarist who traveled the farthest to volunteer went to Auxiliary Captain Mary Kirkwood from Marin County. Tony Budlong, IPFC 64, handles radio traffic on the beach. Vessel examinations were conducted on the spot by Tracy Schulz and Jim Duffley. Bob Burt, Alex Urciuoli, Lynwood May, Tracy Schultz, Keith Simmons, Jim Duffley, Jane Smith and Gloria Edelen were on deck to help promote boating safety and Coast Guard awareness. Alex was our unofficial interpreter for international tourists! Vessel exam conducted near the launch ramp. While some of the world was catching ZZZZZs the Auxiliary team was in uniform ready to serve. Station Monterey docked the 47 foot Motor Life Boat and invited the public for tours. The public streamed on board non-stop for an up-close and personal view of this bastion of safety and protection. Auxiliarists on deck. Tony Budlong continued his tradition of land /sea support for the outrigger races and was on hand each day of the races giving his all via radio and overall support. 4 Letter of Appreciation from Marian and Don Brusato We wish to express our sincere thanks to everyone who came to Ray Burch s memorial service. Being able to meet all of you and hear stories of times you shared with my dad was very special. The public gets a first-hand look at the 47-foot Motor Life Boat. The 47-footer demonstrated the skill and expertise of its crew as it negotiated out of the harbor. The public treasured the opportunity to test their sea legs and the Gold side were great hosts! Dad loved the Auxiliary; it was an important part of his life. Over the years he spoke of many of you by name. He always had something positive to say and looked forward to being with you and each activity with enthusiasm whether he was preparing for class, getting reports ready for a meeting, examining vessels or any event that led him to the harbor. All of you touched his life and I know he touched yours as well. Dad thought highly of the Auxiliary and the people in it. He was proud to be a part of it. We appreciate Scott Galloway bringing to light my dad s activities and accomplishments in the Auxiliary, as well as the impact he had as an instructor. Like many of you, Scott considered him a mentor and a friend this was wonderful to hear. 47-foot Motor Life Boat maneuvers through the harbor.
