6 USS MOUNT WHTNEY (LCC/JCC 20) COMMAND HSTORY NARRATVE Calendar year 2002 was a busy one for USS MOUNT (LCC/JCC 20). After closing out 2001 with a shipyard availability period at NORSHPCO Shipyard, the sh!p jumped into the new year with both feet. On February 9, MOUNT WHTNEY set sail for the North Atlantic region to participate in the highly successful Exercise ~st ong Resolve 2002," one of the largest NATO exercises n recent memory. More than 30 ships from 13 NATO countrie and 12 Partnership for Peace (PfP) nations participated n the exercise. During the ship's two-month journey to the North tlantic region, MOUNT WHTNEY Sailors got the opportunity to enjoy liberty in six different nations: Germany, Poland Denmark, The Netherlands, reland, and Portugal. n June, MOUNT WHTNEY's Engineering Department s t the Atlantic Fleet standard for technical expertise a d watchstanding proficiency as the ship achieved th highest scoring engineering certification in nspe tors from the Afloat Training Group (ATG) went over its sys ems with a fine-toothed comb and determined that the command ship met and exceeded the requirements for engineering readiness. The ship was the first in the Atlantic Fleet to perform the nitial Assessment (A) underway, and passed each of the 28 evolutions of the Underway Demonsttation (UD), for an overall score of Outstanding. After a successful Final Evaluation Period (FEP) in July, MOUNT WHTNEY's crew received a well-deserved res ite as the ship spent the majority of August in its Norf lk, Va., homeport. n September, the ship underwent a sue essful Maintenance and Material Management (3M) Assist V sit. Not long after the inspection, the ship's crew learne that MOUNT WHTNEY's operational tempo would soon incr ase to new heights. MOUNT WHTNEY was scheduled to begin 2003 as it h d ended with a shipyard availability. However, wh~n America upped the ante in the war on terrorism, the ship teceived the short-notice call to support a multi-service $taff during a six-month deployment to the Horn of Africa region.
7 Prior to the deployment, CO:M:MANQER, SECOND FLEET disembarked the ship in order for COMBNED TASK F RCE-HORN OF AFRCA (CJTF-HOA) to err~ark. MOUNT WHTNEY de arted Norfolk on November 12 to participate in OPERATO ENDURNG FREEDOM and the ongoing global war on terrorism. :On November 13, CJTF-HOA embarked the ship to suppor this deployment. 2 En1losure (3)
