1 DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY THE INSTITUTE OF HERALDRY 9325 GUNSTON ROAD, ROOM S112 FORT BELVOIR, VIRGINIA AAMH-IHS 25 October 2018 MEMORANDUM FOR Senior Army Instructor, Montclair High School, JROTC, 4725 Benito Street, Montclair, CA SUBJECT: Authorization for Wear of Shoulder Loop and Shoulder Sleeve Insignia 1. In accordance with the approved suggested designs for the Montclair High School shoulder loop insignia (SLI) and shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI), letters authorizing their wear are enclosed (Encls 1 and 2). 2. The following are also provided for your use: a. SLI manufacturing drawing, black and white line drawing, and color guide. b. SSI manufacturing drawing (A-10J-1235) with black and white line drawing, universal camouflage pattern and operational camouflage pattern. 3. To ensure that insignia is manufactured IAW AR 672-8, please select manufacturers from The Institute of Heraldry s certified list (Encl 3). You will be required to provide one copy of the manufacturing drawing to each manufacturer from whom you are requesting a development bid and production of your insignia. 4. When you are in receipt of your insignia, please forward one color and one subdued sample of the SSI and one sample of the SLI to this Institute for our records. In accordance with the provisions of paragraph 7-12, AR 145-2, a shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) is authorized for wear by the JROTC cadets attending Montclair High School. The description and symbolism of the design are as follows: DESCRIPTION On a shield-shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, blazoned as follows: Celeste, a stylized demi-cavalier affrontée Sable throughout, top plume, face, highlights, and fimbriated Argent, armour and second plume Argent (Silver Gray), cape of the first, facial details of the second. Attached above the shield a light blue scroll edged with a 1/8 inch black border inscribed CAVALIERS in white letters. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width. SYMBOLISM The school colors are Columbia blue and black. Blue refers to loyalty and unity, while black alludes to courage and strength. The cavalier is the school s mascot, a symbol of pride, honor, and chivalry. He s facing forward and charging, an example of how students are prepared to take hold of opportunities and challenges for academic success.
