He is a Marine Vietnam veteran, and retired as a LtCol from the Marine Corps Reserve in During his time in the Marine Corps, he served as an infantry officer, an artillery officer, and as a naval flight officer in Marine fighter squadrons. Jerry was elected in 1992 to the Texas Senate and served for six years representing Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. He is the author of the Texas concealed handgun law, and other legislation reinforcing property rights and protecting the Texas coast. In 2002 Patterson was elected to the office of Texas Land Commissioner, and served in that office for 12 years. Patterson is currently involved in producing two documentary movies about little known aspects of Texas history. He serves on several nonprofit boards, and is president of the Texas Navy Association, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to preserving the history of the Texas Navy. Jerry lives in Austin and has four children. Emily has recently returned from Kosovo where she was an attorney monitoring the judicial system in various Balkan countries. Travis is the fifth consecutive generation to have served overseas during wartime. Twins Cole and Samantha are 7th graders attending school in Austin. The Texas Navy was the official navy of the Republic of Texas. It was created to protect and defend the coastline of Texas and offer protection for the shipping and trade that was desperately needed for the growing republic. Under the command of Commodore Charles Edward Hawkins the Texas Navy helped win independence by preventing a Mexican blockade of the Texas coast, seizing dozens of Mexican fishing vessels and sending their cargoes on to the Texas volunteer army. During the Texas Revolution, the provi-sional government in San Felipe de Austin issued an ordinance in November 1835 to establish an official navy. In January 1836, agents purchased four schooners: Invincible, Brutus, Independence, and Liberty. According to Teddy Roosevelt, the Texas Navy succeeded in preventing reinforcements and provisions at their naval base at Matamoros from reaching General Santa Anna s forces then Continued on p.3

Archived copies of past Anchors may be found at President s Message Tim Hunsberger President, Greater Austin Council, NLUS Greetings! I hope everyone had a joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year. We finished off last year with a great silent auction at our December dinner and collected over $1,550 for the Jones Scholarship fund. That meant, when added to our annual donation, our contribution came to $5000. The silent auction was directed by Kathy Pillmore, and the event took on the look and feel of a Christies Auction and pushed the celebration over the top. Thanks to Kathy for such great leadership. I can t wait to see what we can accomplish in 2017! Also at the December dinner our annual election of officers was held and we voted to restructure the organization by combining the officers and board of directors to form one governing body. The list to the right of this letter shows the current board members and their areas of responsibility. I want to welcome Mary Ritter and Tamisha Jumper to our board, and thank Lisa Sullivan for her leadership in the Youth Programs area. She remains on the board but has turned the Youth Programs reins over to Launtz Rogers. The change in structure resolves the issue of individuals serving in dual capacities. Glenn Looney and Randy Patterson spent the holidays re-writing our Council bylaws to accomodate the change in structure. These were adopted at a February business meeting. Look for the new bylaws on the Council website. Also at the February meeting we officially welcomed the members of the Fleet Admiral Nimitz Council (FANC) to the GAC. The FANC name will continue to be recognized and we hope to host at least one event in Fredericksburg sometime during the year. The GAC is seeking a volunteer to serve as a liaison for the Fredericksburg council as a GAC Vice President. Please contact me if you re interested in helping us to re-energize the FANC. The annual Lone Star Region meeting is scheduled for February in Rockport Texas. Any Council member may attend this meeting. If you d like more information please check our website. Austin has been chosen as one of the cities to host Navy Week (March 19-26) this year, so please be watching for a forthcoming detailed schedule of events. We have exciting speakers for the upcoming year, as usual, thanks to the efforts of Max Miller. Also, I have been working with several other organizations to see how we can better support our returning veterans, especially in the form of suicide prevention. If this is of interest to you, please let me know. Again all the best for this new year. 3 Speaker, cont d from p.1 occupying Texas. This forced Santa Anna to disperse his large army, to forage for food and supplies. This in turn is what led to his defeat at San Jacinto by General Sam Houston, as he was outnumbered. By October 1837, all of the ships had been lost at sea, sunk by the Mexican Navy, run aground, captured, or sold, and replacements were being procured. Today, the history of the Texas Navy is preserved and promoted by the Texas Navy Foundation, a non-profit organization. In late April, Grenadier was attacked on the surface by a McCoy (1943) and at Japanese aircraft. the celebration in his honor held recently at GRENADIER Westminster Manor suffered loss of all Retirement facility propulsion ability in Austin. Pictured are CDR Adam Lopez despite valiant (left rear) CDR Randy efforts to repair Patterson and McCoy the ship while (seated) sitting on the bottom of the sea in 270 feet of water. After surfacing the commanding officer recognized that the situation was unmanageable. In an attempt to move closer to land, the crew even tried to rig a sail, but the efforts proved futile, and the CO ordered the ship scuttled. Seventy six crew members were picked up by a Japanese merchant ship, and all but four survived the remainder of the war in various prison camps in Penang, Bastrop NJROTC Seabear Company Singapore and then Japan, under typically harsh conditions. One of the survivors of this ordeal was a young Torpedomans Mate, Tim McCoy, who now lives in Westminster Manor in Austin. Just before Christmas,Tim was visited and honored by members of his family, other veterans resident in Westminster, friends, the Navy League, and members of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. A plaque commemorating his submarine service, and recognizing his service to the United States, was presented to Tim. It was an honor to be able to participate in recognizing a true hero of WW2. (To read more about McCoy s experiences in WWII, go to documents/the_real_mccoy.pdf (Thanks to Randy Patterson for sharing this story with The Anchor.) The unit celebrated the Marine Corps birthday, November 10 by participating in a spirit-night fundraiser at the Bastrop Chick-Fil-A. Money raised helps to support the unit s activities. Bastrop cadets left their daily classes to march from the Bat Bridge to the Capitol in the November 11th Veterans Day parade in downtown Austin. On November 12 the Color Guard presented colors for the Bastrop Veterans Day parade and helped with the setup for the Red, White and Blue Banquet. Chief Canales, senior naval science instructor for the unit, was presented with an award at the banquet for his service. Seaman Apprentice Mica Cantu took 3rd place in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the local VFW. Three cadets were sworn into the military and will report after graduation: Cadet PO2 Dakota Migues (Navy), Cadet LCD Leslie Rosales (Navy) and Cadet LTJG Dakota Patterson (Army) The Anchor, January February

6 Chaplain s Corner by Jim Lovering A new year has begun and as a faith people have we taken on an increased spiritually? Many avenues exist and we need to think outside the box for moments to commune with our Creator. In an age of technology, the possibilities are endless. MATTHEW 6 instructs us about Prayer and Charity, which we would be prudent to refresh our grounding in our spirituality. We walk by faith and not by sight. Peace, Jim George T. Jones, U. S.
