3 Junior Police Academy The Junior Police Academy is designed to motivate young people to be outstanding citizens through law enforcement education. While being a part of our community policing program, the Junior Police Academy encourages our young citizens to be partners, in building a safer community. The academy program transforms police officers from merely responding to crime to being a positive role model, and a pro-active force in creating a safe learning environment. Young people do not understand what police officers do, or why they do it. The Junior Police Academy is designed to take the mystery out of law enforcement, and provide a comfortable While the youth's that attend this academy may not want to become police officers in their future, the program does instilled confidence and a sense of achievement within our young citizens.

4 Junior Police Academy Beaufort (JPA) The MCAS Beaufort J.P.A. (Junior Police Academy) is a great opportunity for the youth of Laurel Bay to learn what it takes to be a police officer. During this four-week academy, the students gain some insight into the multiple functions their local law enforcement professionals perform on a daily basis. The students learn about laws, enforcement practices and procedures, and other pertinent information that can affect them in their community. This program is designed for middle-school aged students and is available to anyone who has completed the 4th grade, but has yet to begin high school. Military Police Officers of the Marine Corps Police Provost s Marshal provide the students instruction on many different facets of the police profession, including patrol work, handling crime scenes, SWAT operations, K-9 handling, and conducting building searches. They learn a lot and hopefully have a ton of fun in the process. Ever rappelled off a building? If the answer is no, this might be the place for you!

5 What Junior Police Academy Does The MCAS BFT Junior Police Academy, started in 2013 emphasizes respect, discipline and honesty through a rigorous program of physical training and military style experiences. The essential focus is to build confidence and to students ability to deal positively with tough, social situations. Additionally, the program works to present law enforcement in a positive role. Junior Police Academy Target Audience The MCAS Beaufort Junior Police Academy is targeted at students entering the 4th grade. Program Description The Junior Police Academy is an intensive 4 week program which simulates officer training. It introduces recruits to techniques used by law enforcement when making arrests for drunk driving, conducting searches and fingerprinting. A high impact part of the program simulates the dangerous experience of driving under the influence of alcohol. Recruits wear uniforms, are responsible to arrive on time daily and are expected to take notes on their training and experiences. Cadets are chosen by law enforcement staff from students recommended by parents who are considered to be at risk and likely to benefit from the Junior Police Academy. Cadets undergo a very structured, well disciplined, four week training program, focusing on goal setting and self esteem, conflict resolution and mediation, violence and substance abuse prevention, law and justice along with decision making skills. Cadets participate community service project. Drills and physical fitness are used to develop teamwork and maintain discipline. There is no cost to the cadets and their families for participating in the academy. Community donations are solicited to fund the academy in the form of cash, goods, and services from businesses, charitable organizations, and private citizens with the exception of personnel, facilities, and transportation costs which are funded by the agencies involved.

6 Staff are assigned as Officer-In-Charge and Academy Coordinators. Personnel from participating agencies fall under the direction of the Officer-In Charge and Academy Coordinators who oversee the operation of the Academy. The Junior Police Academy typically begins the first week of Feb 2013 each year and concludes four weeks later with a formal graduation ceremony. Academy Cadets are mentored for the following school year by personnel associated with the law enforcement agencies involved. Each participating agency commits personnel to undertake the academy as well as the mentoring program Criteria for Student/Cadet Selection: Have successfully completed the 4th thru 6th grade. Have no serious history of aggravated assaults or weapons violations. A case by case review will be conducted. An interest in attending and contributing to the academy. A student with no gang affiliation and any student seeking a way to leave the gang/violent environment. A student who feels trapped by gangs/violence. Those committed to changing their attitude and lifestyle and/or are interested in Law Enforcement. Recommendations from School Resource Officer and school faculty. Allow faculty to pre-select high risk, middle, and low risk students who have a compatible blend. Parents will be invited to meet with the Junior Police Academy representative and must consent in writing to commit their son or daughter to attend. Allow for a substitute roster in case those initially starting the academy fail to attend. No gang attire, or any other mode of dress which is deemed inappropriate by officers will be allowed

7 (i.e.: colors, music groups, short shirts/shorts, etc). While the academy is in session, it will be treated as a "closed campus" session (no one leaving before classes/activities have ended). Rules of Conduct and Expectations: Must be respectful at all times No put downs. No swearing. No short shorts or cut off t-shirts. All recruits will wear matching t-shirts provided to them or student-provided white t-shirts. Shorts must be knee length or mid thigh. Wear tennis shoes every day. No gang attire, signs, or language. No weapons. Must remain Violence free, Gang free, and Drug free. Have 100% attendance. Must participate in class. Must be on time for all activities. A phone call to Ofc. Carter is mandatory if a student is ill or will not be able to attend. What you can expect from being a part of the Youth Police Academy

8 Youth will take part in a mock police academy involving hands-on, role-playing and team building exercises. The Academy provides an opportunity for youth and police officers to build stronger, more positive relationships while introducing participants to the field of law enforcement. Structured activities are designed to highlight the four cardinal work principles of: Teamwork Leadership Communication Problem Solving / Conflict Resolution Through exploration and discovery, cadets will gain an understanding of the field of law enforcement by participating in sessions that focus on: 1. Basic Crime Scene Investigation 2. Advanced Crime Scene Investigation* 3. Traffic and Criminal Law* 4. Conflict Resolution 5. Specialized Units 6. Use of Force Principles 7. Building Searches* 8. Responding to Crimes in Progress* 9. Physical Agility Training 10. Police-Community Relations* 11. Restraint Techniques 12. Radio Communication 13. Criminal Investigation Procedures 14. Advanced Criminal Investigation*

9 DROP OFF/PICK UP PROCEDURES Children should be dropped off/ picked up via the front entrance; the first set of doors on the left as you enter the driveway, by the flagpole. This entrance leads to the lobby. Sign in/out sheet will be at the security desk in the lobby. Upon arrival, and before leaving, each child should sign in/out. During supervised drop off/pickup times (8:30am- -1:30pm) children should report to the lobby at PMO, which is located through the main entrance to PMO. The Academy will provide activities, or the children may sit quietly and read, write, play their hand-held video games, or listen to their personal music devices (with headphones only). **STAFF SUPERVISION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE PRIOR TO 10:00AM. PLEASE BE SURE YOUR CHILDREN NO NOT ARRIVE PRIOR TO 9:45 AM. The Academy will begin promptly at 10:00 am and end promptly at 2:15 pm each day. Late Sign-In Any child arriving after 9:00am will be considered late and must report to the administrative office to sign-in. No Exceptions! Late Sign-Out Any child not picked-up prior to 3:00pm will be considered a late pick-up. Late pick-ups will be handled as follows: 1. The parent, relative or guardian will receive a telephone call to pick-up their child. 2. If no one can be reached to pick-up their child by 3:00pm, Coordinator Academy police will be notified to take custody of the child. 3. Parents with two or more late pick-ups will be scheduled to meet with Director to determine further program participation. Sick/Absence Calls If your child is sick or will not be attending the Jr. Police Academy for any other reason, parents must contact the office at (843) by 8:30am. Please leave a message with the date, time, child s name, reason for the absence, and expected return date.

10 TUITION Tuition per child for the entire four week program is $ The tuition fee includes all activities and materials including; one t-shirt, and water bottle per child. Additional t-shirts can be purchased in advance at the time of registration, for $10.00 each. Please specify size on the registration form. Payment Options: CASH ONLY will be accepted. REFUNDS A 100% refund will be granted if registration is withdrawn prior to the start of day one of the program. A 50% refund will be granted if a child is withdrawn prior to the start of day two of the program. No Refunds will be issued thereafter. NO REFUNDS
