The Crew Training Class will begin in June 2017 and be held at the McVey House in Fort Lauderdale. This is the course needed to provide the basis for your Auxiliary Crew certification with the US Coast Guard. The course will be taught by various members of the Division who are all experienced as Crew or Coxswain. This course will also bring you into contact with other members of Division 3 so you will have the potential opportunity to work on vessels from other Flotillas during your career as Crew or Coxswain. Once we have the specific dates and times for the course we will make it available to all so you can work this into your schedules. As promised in past LOG articles, I am including the links to the Crew Manual and the PQS directives to attain the Crew classification with this article. We look forward to having several of you attending the Crew classes and becoming certified Crew for the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Jim Goldasich, FSO-OPS-36 OUT Liliane Meghabghab Navigation Services NO REPORT Andrea Rutherfoord Public Education Thank you to the instructors for our May 6 ABS class: Rick Celestino, Rob Lambie, and Jim Goldasich. Also thank you to aid, Duncan Ferguson and Rob Lambie. We had 13 students (3 teens) at the class. So far this year, we have graduated 55 boating students (including 14 teens). Thank you, also, to the public affairs staff, program visitors, and vessel examiners, as well as members, promoting the About Boating Safety class with the public. Our next classes are June 3, followed by July 8. If you are interested in becoming an instructor, please contact me about how to get started. We need you! Thanks to everyone who helped promote National Safe Boating Week, May This national campaign is sponsored by the Coast Guard and other marine organizations to remind boaters to wear life jackets, take a boating safety class, and have their vessels inspected for safety equipment. Summer is the most popular boating season even in Florida, and we hope this campaign is effective in preventing accidents and deaths, and in showing boaters how to enjoy our beautiful waterways safely. I was proud to accept a NSBW proclamation from Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein at the City Commission meeting, May 16, 2017.
7 Debbie Davis Program Visitor For those members who do not already know about the program, the Public Visitor (PV) Program is a part of the USCG Auxiliary Recreational Boating Safety mission. The PV program is designed to provide the general public with the most current boating safety information and to establish a point of contact for boaters interested in boating safety. Businesses such as marine dealers, marine stores, dive shops, marinas, libraries, nautical stores, etc. in turn, can provide their customers with boating safety literature, information on Courtesy Vessel Safety Checks, and the location of public education courses. Monthly visitations provide an informative interaction between the USCG Auxiliary, businesses and the boating public. If you are interested in becoming a Public Visitor representing USCG Auxiliary 3-6, please contact me for assistance. Barry Ruchowitz FSO-FN@CGAUXBOCA.ORG I would like to thank you for your support and participation with Flotilla 36. As a team, we support DHS, the Coast Guard, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is really more than that this is our way of giving back to the government, military, and the boating community. We build our annual Flotilla budget based on your dues and other income. Please check with the roster to make sure your personal information is still correct phone numbers, address, and mailing address. If items have changed, contact Lynn Sauerwein with the updated information. Todd Greenstein FSO-CM Flotilla 36 participated in HUREX 2017 and will participate in future exercises that the division will hold.
8 Ron Dillman FSO-PA Greetings All! Well, as you all remember from my last log article, I used to be a Bridge Tender at the Boca Inlet. Just to recap a couple of items, The bridges are manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Also, the bridge tenders are under the operational control of the maintenance company that services the bridges. When the maintenance people come onto the bridge, the tender has to open and close the bridge for testing and preventative maintenance procedures. A typical bridge opening starts with a Vessel Captain requesting an opening. At that point, I would acknowledge the request by radio on Channel 9. I then go outside the bridge house to make sure that there are no pedestrian or vehicles on the bridge. After a safe evaluation, I make an announcement that the bridge is opening and requesting vessels to please remain outside the fenders until the spans are fully raised. I then go outside again to be sure that the bridge is clear. I come back in and lower the off-going gates, then the oncoming gates. At this point, I retract the locks that attach to the roadway. I then push a button to raise the bridge span. Once the last vessel has passed under the bridge, I go outside again to check the blindspot which is a view of the bridge that I can t see because the span is raised. Once I m satisfied the bridge is clear, I make an announcement the bridge is lowering. I then lower the span, drive the locks that lock the bridge to the roadway, and then raise the off-going gates and the on-coming gates. The traffic lights will then turn green and vehicle traffic will start to move. Keep in mind that the Boca Inlet Bridge is ON DEMAND meaning, that once I close the bridge, Another vessel can call for an opening at any time. When that happens, I would tell the Captain that I will open the bridge as soon as I can clear vehicle traffic. Some bridges are on a time schedule. The Hillsboro Blvd. bridge as well as Hillsboro Inlet are examples of this. Just for your information, the Hillsboro Inlet bridge is the busiest bridge in the state of Florida. Their schedule is every 15 minutes on the hour. That s all for now. Next month I ll try give you an idea of some of the forms that are filled out on a daily basis. Brent Davis FSO-MS fso-ms@cgauxboca.org Marine Safety The Coast Guard Auxiliary Marine Safety program is designed to facilitate and encourage Auxiliary support for Coast Guard Sectors in the legacy Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Programs. There are four Divisions in the Prevention Department devoted to the Marine Safety program: 1. Commercial Vessel Activities This is primarily inspection related for commercial shipping, fishing and passenger vessels. The goal is to ensure safety and adherence to environmental regulations. 2. Port and Facility Activities This is similar to item 1 except it is related to ports and marine facilities and waterways.
9 3. Prevention Outreach These are outreach programs to teach the general public and mariners the importance to environmental protection for our ocean, waterways and marine life. 4. Communication and Education these are the programs provided by the auxiliary to promote education and recognition for Marine Safety. Let s focus on one aspect of marine environmental protection this month: Plastic discarded in the ocean and the effect it has on marine life. As you know, plastic has a very long life span and can cause damage in the ocean for hundreds of years. Even small pieces cause tremendous damage because fish, birds and other marine life mistake the plastic for food and this often leads to starvation or digestive issues. Larger plastic items, well, these photos speak for themselves: What can you do? 1. Never throw plastic items in the water. Recycle them. 2. Whenever possible, retrieve plastic items that you see on the beach and water. Recycle them. 3. Spread the message to others! Mario Stagliano FSO-HR Prospective Member Recruitment My Contact Information: The best way to alert me of a prospective member s interest in our organization is via mario.stagliano@gmail.com. 15 Has your Auxiliary member ID card expired? Once a year, check the expiration date on your member ID card. The card is valid for 5 years. When it s time to get a new card, you initiate the process. If it s within a few months of expiration, or has already expired: 1. Tell the FC or VFC that you need a renewed ID card. They can help you get started. 2. Have your picture taken in the office (red background, uniform shirt). Zoom in so only your head with the red background is showing. 3. In an , send the picture to the FC. Also provide the current information on the back of your card: Height (inches), weight, eye color, hair color, blood type, date of birth, and ID number. The FC will submit your photo and information into the system. In a few weeks, the new card will be sent to the FC, who will have it at meetings. Bring your old card to swap out for the new card. Note: If you present an expired card at the gate of a military base, you will not be allowed entry and your card might even be confiscated.
