1 FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE 8005 FLSA: Non-Exempt 11/29/17 Pay Grade: PS1/4 NATURE OF WORK: Upon hire, new employees are appointed provisionally as Firefighter Trainees and will begin the Montgomery Fire Department's (MFD) Recruit School. During Recruit School, Firefighter Trainees must complete the physical and coursework requirements as well as follow all applicable rules and regulations. Firefighter Trainees must adhere to strict rules on physical fitness, dress code and appearance while in school. Appearance includes strict hair and shaving guidelines as set by the Montgomery Fire Academy. Trainees will also assist the department in normal Firefighter duties listed below but will do so under close supervision during their Recruit School training period. Upon completion of all Recruit School requirements, Firefighter Trainees will be appointed to the Firefighter classification and will serve a six (6) month probationary period before becoming permanent employees. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a Station or Training Division Lieutenant or Captain. WORK RESPONSIBILITIES: WR1. Participates in Montgomery Fire Department Recruit School programs using MFD manuals, policies and procedures, maps, textbooks, etc. in order to learn general firefighting methods and techniques and meet Recruit School requirements for Firefighter eligibility status. WR2. Performs physical fitness requirements for Recruit School to include running up to 5 miles or more, completing 100 or more push-ups, 20 or more pull-ups. WR3. Completes coursework required by Recruit School curriculum to include basic firefighting, Emergency Medical Technician courses, and MFD Rules and Regulations. WR4. Assists in performing routine Firefighter duties using turnout gear, MFD tools and equipment, and apparatus following MFD Rules and Regulations, supervisory instruction as needed to observe and learn general Firefighting duties, assist the department at emergency scenes when manpower is low. WR5. Assists in inspecting and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus and station quarters and performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned from the supervisor. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of assigned territory including the location of streets, hydrants, block numbers, target hazards in order to respond quickly to emergency incidents. Knowledge of department and station policies, procedures, rules and regulations and common practices such as chain-of-command, personnel rules and master letter files as needed to adequately perform emergency operations or daily activities such as station maintenance or training activities. Skill at basic math in order to compute pump pressures when performing suppression operations such as ventilation.

2 FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE Page 2 Ability to learn general firefighting methods and techniques. Ability to learn MFD policies, Rules, Regulations, common practices. Ability to learn IFSTA procedures as needed to become certified as a Firefighter. Ability to learn modern and safe firefighting and rescue methods, principles, practices, and techniques and of fire behavior and fire suppression systems. Ability to learn rescue operations safely to include drags and carries using department apparatus, tools and equipment. Ability to learn suppression operations safely using department apparatus, tools and equipment to include tying ropes and knots, raising ladders, and flaking and advancing hose. Ability to remain calm under stressful and adverse conditions. Ability to learn fire suppression operations aggressively as commanded. Ability to carry out orders and to follow verbal instructions. Ability to learn the safe operation and proper uses of equipment or tools used in rescue or suppression operations, during emergency incidents or training activities and of proper maintenance methods and techniques. Ability to learn the proper and safe removing, carrying and operation of hand and power tools or equipment such as hose, ladders, fans, etc. weighing up to approximately 60 pounds in order to perform suppression or rescue operations, respond to emergency incidents or perform training activities or drills. Ability to learn the proper maintenance of hand and power tools or equipment such as hose, ladders, fans, etc. Ability to learn building or vehicle construction as needed to perform suppression or rescue operations to include analyzing the situation, identifying problems or potential problems and determining the best course of action or tactics. Ability to learn how to select proper equipment or tools such as hose, ladders, nozzles, etc. to use in performing suppression or rescue operations or training activities. Ability to learn how to determine the most appropriate method, technique or tactics for conducting rescue or suppression operations quickly and safely such as selecting proper hose or ladders or setting nozzles at appropriate settings. Ability to learn to recognize and identify hazards to include hazardous materials, power lines, etc. and determine appropriate action to safely and quickly perform or continue suppression or rescue operations. Ability to communicate orally in order to relay information related to rescues, fire progress, tactics, condition and location of victims, etc. Ability to communicate in writing in order to complete reports or department forms or prepare memos. Ability to learn basic life support procedures. Ability to learn basic life support medical procedures to include CPR, blood pressure and pulse readings using medical tools and equipment. Ability to learn how to use medical tools and equipment in order to perform basic life support procedures. Ability to learn how to utilize equipment as needed to ensure safety against contagious diseases to include masks, gloves, and eye protection.

3 FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE Page 3 Ability to learn the proper use and maintenance of medical tools and equipment. Ability to learn how to conduct patient assessments using information collected or observations. Ability to learn how to collect patient history information from relatives or bystanders. Ability to learn how to correctly and quickly identify illnesses and injuries of patients using visual conditions, signs and symptoms based on basic life support training. Ability to learn how to select proper equipment, supplies or tools to be used based on diagnosis and treatment. Ability to learn how to operate radio equipment using 10-signals and codes in order to communicate to companies. Ability to learn the MFD 10-signals and codes. Ability to learn how to monitor radio traffic at all times and while doing other tasks in order to respond quickly to emergency alarms. Ability to learn to safely drive and operate MFD apparatus to include following traffic laws, reading gauges or pump panels or performing pump operations, operating aerial ladders and spotting truck properly. Ability to learn the safe operation, proper use and maintenance of apparatus to include hydraulics. Ability to learn the proper maintenance of apparatus by reading fluid levels, checking brakes, etc. Physical ability to lift, carry or drag heavy equipment, tools, victims or patients weighing from pounds to include maneuvering tools or equipment and preparing for use. Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders up to heights of 110 feet. Physical ability to perform suppression or rescue operations quickly and efficiently to include removing obstructions and to pace activities in order to reserve strength for critical operations such as rescues.

4 FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE Page 4 PRE-EMPLOYMENT MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Applicants shall be at least 18 years of age at the time of employment. Employment with the City of Montgomery is conditioned upon the potential employee passing a pre-employment drug test. (The drug test will require the submission of a sample of hair, finger nails, and/or urine that will verify illegal drug use.) Must possess a diploma from a high school accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Alabama State Board of Education or possess a General Education Development (GED) certificate. NOTE: A passing GPA from an S.A.C.S. accredited college or university may substitute for the S.A.C.S. accredited high school diploma or GED certificate requirement. This does not include internet colleges or trade school coursework. Must be of good moral character and have no record of convictions of a misdemeanor or felony involving violence, force, or moral turpitude. Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a valid Alabama Driver's License prior to employment. Must pass the Physical Agility Test (CPAT) Must pass a medical exam Must meet the Fire Department s weight requirements POST-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: New employees will be required to successfully complete approximately 22 weeks of Montgomery Fire Department Academy Training including completion of Firefighter I/II certification. Must obtain an EMT I State License within six months after becoming a certified Firefighter. Beginning on the date of employment, Firefighters are NOT to smoke tobacco products or use smokeless tobacco at ANY time (on or off duty). Must be available to respond to emergency incidents while off duty when called upon. Must be willing to meet Montgomery Fire Department s residency requirements. Must be willing to work job assignment schedules including 24/48 hours or hour shifts.
