Tonight, SDCWRT Treasurer Tim Charlesworth will present Unusual Places from the Civil War: The Western Territories. When Civil War Enthusiasts think about the Civil War in the western theater their gaze normally stops at the Mississippi River and call it good. This evening Tim Charlesworth will bring you the third episode from his ongoing series of exploring the Civil War where it occurred in unusual places. Tonight s presentation will explore the violent struggles within the Western Territories of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah along with the forces and personalities who shaped them. We will explore the history of the desire of Confederate leaders to carve a pathway from the Rio Grande in Texas all the way to the Pacific to obtain land for the expansion of slavery and exploit the riches of minerals, military equipment, and stores located throughout this region. However, the Confederates found the land they cast their gaze upon was not so easy to obtain. Join us for Mr. Charlesworth s enthralling adventure out west. March 2016 Minutes By: Travis Fuqua On Wednesday, March 16, 2016 the SDCWRT held a book show and tell. Several members and guests brought books and shared them with the audience. The books were as follows: 1. Al Haun brought several issues of Hallowed Ground which is about Civil War battlefield trusts. It was started by preserving land from the Battle of Chantilly in 1989 and has expanded since. He also brought several issues of Civil War News which is a newspaper about current events related to the Civil War. April 10, 2016 SDCWRT Skirmish Line 1

2 2. Tim Charlesworth brought various issues of American Civil War and Civil War Times which are major Civil War periodicals with articles from leading Civil War scholars. He also had copies of Blue and Gray which featured good maps. There were also copies of The Civil War Monitor which he said was a good magazine for those new to the Civil War. He also had copies of the book series Emerging Civil War about various topics. 3. Larry Corbett had The Gettysburg Companion by Mark Adkin, 2008, which is an extensive encyclopedic volume about the Battle of Gettysburg. There were many maps, photographs, color plates, and illustrations. 4. Phil Binks bought Company Orders of the 7 th Veterans Reserve Corps. This was the original handwritten book containing the orders for this corps which began as the invalid corps for those who were injured, but still able to serve in some capacity usually as guards and clerks. The records were kept from June 1865-November 1865 and feature pages and pages of orders written in beautiful handwriting. He received it as a Christmas gift. 5. Travis Fuqua brought The Civil War in Color by John Guntzelman, This book contains many photographs of the Civil War from battle scenes to famous people that were colorized using advanced digital techniques and much research. He explained how this book may serve to bring a more tangible, color version of the Civil War to new audiences. 6. Curtis Dryer brought Portals to Hell by Lonnie Speer about prison camps in the Civil War. This book mentions the infamous Andersonville, but goes on about many others. The book also explains the unpleasant experiences of those unfortunate enough be imprisoned. 7. Gordon Gidlund brought in Lee s Tarnished Lieutenant by William G. Piston. This book is about General Longstreet and how he was a decent, but not very dynamic commander. Longstreet later made the claim that the Republicans and not regions or ideologies won the War. He later joined the Republican Party and became known as a turncoat to the South and became a scapegoat for their losing the war. 8. Bob Bell brought in the Library of Congress Illustrated Timeline of the Civil War. This volume contains many pictures and goes from February 1861 to May There are many explanations on what happened on certain days. He also had Civil War for Dummies which despite its title still has useful information for beginning and advanced students of the Civil War. He also had the Smithsonian Great Battles and Battlefields of the Civil War which is a companion to any tourist to Civil War battlefields. 9. Dave Tooley brought in Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson which is a good one-volume narrative of the Civil War. He also had Hard Tack and Coffee which is an excellent source on what soldiers ate in the conflict. His greatest book, however, was Miller s Photographic History of the Civil War, a first edition from 1911 in ten volumes. This series which was made by the famous photographer is perhaps the authoritative source on Civil War photography. 10. John Friend bought in The Un-Civil War by Leonard Scruggs of North Carolina. This book presents a pro-southern view of Radical Reconstruction and the war in general. The book talks about the consequences of the total war waged against the South. He said this book is unique in modern manuscripts in its viewpoint. Gazette665 s 2016 History Conference By: Travis Fuqua Gazette665 will be hosting a Civil War conference about the events in 1861 on June 4, 2016 from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm in Temecula.
