4 Precision Air Drop (PAD) Program PAD Program: AFRL program to support AMC in improving singlepass, unguided, high-altitude airdrop accuracy. 4

5 PAWS-4 Test Objectives PAWS-4 Primary Objective: Collect data from airborne LIDAR system up to currently effective altitudes (focused on surface to 24,999 feet MSL) to support the assessment of the potential impact of an airborne wind sensor to airdrop. Secondary Objective: Support the MS&A team in evaluating the effectiveness of the airborne LIDAR system and it s impact on precision airdrop. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth.

11 GWS Program Background Overall Goal: Conduct Test and Analysis on Potential Airborne Wind Sensors for the AC-130 Gunship to Increase First-shot Accuracy and Probability of Hit. What technologies are available that could meet requirements for Gunship wind sensing (sensor performance, SWaP, environmental,.)? 2. What are the optimal tradeoffs of accuracy, timeliness, and completeness for sensed wind data? 3. How much does wind error contribute to miss distance relative to temperature, pressure, and alignment errors, etc? 4. How useful is a partial wind profile? 5. What Technical Readiness Level (TRL) are current wind sensing systems?

15 GWS-2 Demonstration System Lockheed-Martin Coherent Technologies WindTracer X Doppler LIDAR system Analyzes the transitory nature of extreme low-level wind fields. The system uses a laser designated as Class 1M 10 January 2018

16 GWS3 Objectives Objective 1: Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3). Demonstrate limited or minimal E3 between the LMCT WindTracerX LIDAR System and baseline AC 130W aircraft systems. Reuse of Det1, USSOCOM ground & air EMC Test Cards for AC-130W Objective 2: Collect data. Collect data from the Lockheed-Martin Coherent Technologies (LMCT) WindtracerX LIDAR System, ATACNAV INU, and 30mm accuracy data (.DX file) at AC-130W representative airspeeds, altitudes, and bank angles (up to 17,500 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL)). Objective 3: Accuracy improvement. Post-mission analyzed the change in 30mm accuracy when combining live-fire data with wind profile data

21 Things to think about Start the Mod plan & approval process early Plan for Mod system engineering (G limits Fwd/Aft/Lateral). AFRL/DO & /EN for Civilian/Public AC USAF A/C SPO CCB for Mil A/C (AFRL/DO & EN have oversight) AFTC/AFRL treats private A/C differently (Public vs. Civil) Impacts airworthiness approvals and authority (USAF vs FAA) Public designation requires GFR identification & time to inspect commercial A/C operator, evaluate, & report (good for 2yrs) There are a variety of commercial Test A/C available at a variety of costs/expenses depending on contract (ranges/test orgs/etc.): Grand Caravan, Twin Otter, C-130A, Helicopters, etc. Ops community likes to see Tech Demo s on platforms at representative, airspeeds, and mission profiles (Ex. GWS-2 2A) Laser Clearing House (Kirtland AFB / Vandenburg AFB) approval required if operating above the horizon Deconfliction takes time & impacts test ops JFCC SPACE/JSpOC/LCH, 747 Nebraska Ave, Room B209, VAFB, CA Plan for an integration event (on A/C, in representative environment) followed by main test period (3-4 weeks later) -- allows for issues to be resolved & optimizes test time. 21
