1 A History of Innovation, A Future of Success Army 242nd Birthday run set To help celebrate the Army s 242nd birthday, Department of Army will host a birthday run beginning and ending at Fort Myer s Summerall Field, Friday, June 16. To facilitate runners and their safe passage, Summerall Field parking lot will be closed to those who normally park there beginning at 9 p.m. June 15 through to about 9 a.m. June 16. NOTE: Any vehicles left in the lot after 9 p.m. June 15 until 6 a.m. June 16, will be towed at the owner s expense. For more information, call /1. Community Activities Center has free golf tourney tickets *The JBM-HH Community Activities Center, Fort Myer, has Quicken Loan /Tiger Woods Golf tournament tickets for distribution beginning at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, June 13 at the Center, Building 405. All DoD ID cardholders including active duty, reserve component and retired military personnel, family members and DoD civilians are eligible for the free tickets. *In addition, the Center has Washington Redskin tickets for sale. Combination packages consist of one pair of pre-season tickets and one pair of regular season tickets. Cost is $530 for each package. Seats are located in section 129 lower level, end zone. 1

2 VA claims assistance offered in June Veterans Administration claims assistance is offered Wednesday June 21, 7:30 a.m. 1 p.m., in Bldg. 29, Rm. 103, Henderson Hall. An AMVETS representative will review service member medical records and provide assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation claims process. This service is by appointment only. Please call to schedule. 74th Baker s Creek Ceremony photo credit: Daniel Yeadon The 74th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of the 1943 Bakers Creek Air Crash will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va. The ceremony will be held at the site of the Bakers Creek Memorial, located off of McNair Road on the Fort Myer side of the joint base and across from the Spates Community Club. The ceremony is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Bakers Creek Memorial was erected in honor of the 40 Americans -- members of the Army Air Corps -- killed in a World War II aviation crash in the Southwest Pacific as they were returning from R&R leave in Australia to the battlefields of New Guinea. With 35 soldiers and 6 crew members onboard, the B-17 transport crashed shortly after takeoff at about 6 a.m., June 14, 1943, at Bakers Creek near Mackay, Queensland, killing all but one person. Second (Indianhead) Division reunion The Second (Indianhead) Division Association (formed in France during World War I) is searching for anyone who served in the Army s 2nd Infantry Division at any time. This year the association will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the division Sept , in Arlington, Va. The next briefing, held from 8 a.m. to noon is Tuesday, July 18, in the Fort Myer Community Activities Center, Building 405. The Retirement Services Office provides counseling and assistance to active duty service personnel, retirees, widows, widowers, survivors and family members from all branches of military service concerning rights, benefits and entitlements. For more information, call Field Sanitation Team training slated at Fort Belvoir The Environmental Health section of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is enrolling students for the Field Sanitation Team (FST) certification course from June 19 through 23. The 40 hours of classroom instructions and hands-on practicum reinforce preventive medicine concepts that protect Warfighters from disease and non-battle injuries (waterborne and foodborne illnesses, vector-borne diseases, toxic industrial materials, etc.). Paragraph 1-7 of AR 40-5 directs appointment of two FST members for all company-sized units. The course duration is June 19 through 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Bldg

3 Reminder: Great Falls is off limits FRIDAY NIGHTS 8PM SUNSETS WITH A SOUNDTRACK SUMMER CONCERT SERIES West Side of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC The U.S. Army Band continues its annual tradition of presenting free concerts of Classical Pops, Big Band, Rock, and Patriotic music on the West Side of the U.S. Capitol with the series we like to call: Sunsets with a Soundtrack. The public will be allowed to place lawn chairs on the stone terrace in front of the band on the West Side of the Capitol, and on the West Lawn (when available). Food is permitted; however, NO alcohol or glass bottles are allowed. Concerts are weekly on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. from June 2 through August 25. Note: there will be no performance on Friday, June 30 or Friday, August 18. It s that time of year to remind military personnel of the Off Limits status of a nearby waterway. The Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board has placed the Potomac River Great Falls area OFF LIMITS to all military personnel. Military personnel are ordered not to go into this area; the Great Falls area is posted with off limits signs applicable to everyone. This area is unsafe, and water activities in the Great Falls Potomac River Gorge area are prohibited by law in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The area along the Potomac River that extends from Sycamore Island to Chain Bridge is off limits due to the strong undertow currents. Undertows are dangerous: the surface of the water can be calm, but beneath the surface, strong water currents pull in opposite directions. Arlington police accepting 'Citizens Police Academy' applications The Arlington County Police Department is now accepting applications for the fall Citizens Police Academy. The 21st Citizens Police Academy will begin on Thursday, Sept. 7; apply by July 7. The Academy will consist of 12 sessions that meet on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at police headquarters located at 1425 North Courthouse Road, Arlington, Virginia. The Citizens Police Academy is designed to create better understanding and communication between citizens and the police through education and provide comprehensive information about the operations of the Arlington County Police Department. Some of the topics of discussion include: police hiring, legal considerations, use of force, vehicle operations, community engagement, K9, SWAT and mental health crisis intervention.
