6 1. Planned Mantenance Avalablty: Durng February 1997, USS MOUNT WHTNEY completed Naval Shpyard, Portsmouth, Vrgna. Durng ths servces areas on the shp were renovated ncludng dnng facltes, Supply Department berthng, facltes, shp's laundry faclty wth the washers and dryers, and the dental facltes. 2. JTFEX 97-2: The scenaro for JTFEX 97-2 was the Gulf of Saban crss and was conducted prmarly along the outheastern coast of the Unted States. The exercse was sponso ed by Unted States Atlantc Command and coordnated by Commander Second Fleet as Commander, Combned Jont Task Force 950. artcpants ncluded actve duty and reserve personnel from U.S. Navy, Ar Force, Army, and Marne Corps. Addtonally, members from the followng natons partcpated: Argentna Brazl France Germany Portugal Unted Kngdom Span 3. Talored Shpboard Tranng Avalablty: ~hree TSTA evolutons were conducted durng 1997, by Afloat Tranng Group, provdng extensve tranng n areas of engneerng, operatons, ntellgence, mantenance, and damage control. 4. Man Condenser Casualty and Assocated Repars: The frst major casualty to the man condenser occurred n md June 1997, when a hgh salnty level was detected. The result'ng mantenance nvolved retubng the man condenser by orfolk Naval Shpyard personnel. The cost of repars amounted to $3 mllon. 5. JTFEX 97-3: The scenaro for JTFEX 97-3 centerep around the Gulf of Saban crss and was conducted prmarly along the southeastern coast of the Unted States. Ths was t e frst USACOM/SECONDFLT JTFEX whch ncluded mne warfare o eratons coordnated by Commander, Mne Warfare Command, Corp s Chrst. Partcpants ncluded actve duty and reserve person el from US Navy, Ar Force, Army, and Marne Corps. Addtonal y, members from the followng natons partcpated: Canada Portugal Enclosure (3 )
7 6. Surface Warfare Tranng Week: Surface Warfare ranng evolutons were conducted twce durng 1997 each nvblvng over 20 shps located at Norfolk Naval Base and Lttle Creek Amphbous Base. Tranng evolutons ncluded event6 such as damage control, admnstraton, and athletcs. Over 200 members of MOUNT WHTNEY1s crew partcpated n the August SWTW leadng MOUNT WHTNEY to a second Place standng. 7. Communcatons and Systems Upgrades: Several modfcatons and upgrades were mplemented throughout the Communcatons Department and are provded below: l a. The Communcaton Offcer's offce was reloc Jont Message Center. The renovaton was conducted crew, savng thousands of dollars whch otherwse wo expended on commercal contracts. b. The Automated Securty ncdent Management S stem (ASMS) termnal was nstalled n a new four termnal comput staton ncreasng ts capablty to detect possble the SPF?.NET, NPF?.NET, CTPS and JMCS. c. Two Navy Order Wre (NOW) statons were nst lled n December These NOW statons, replacng the 01 er Navy Standard Teletypes (NST1s), decreases the amount of aper used n Message Center operatons, serves as a back-up for t e Navy Modular Automated Communcatons Systems 11, and ad n troubleshootng crcut outages. d. The Battle Group nformaton Exchange System, 1 (BGXS) was nstalled n October 1997, enhancng recept and transmsson of message traffc, photographs, and other data. e. Radant Mercury, a JMCS LAN based software bsed to santze genser nformaton to NATO systems, was nstalled n December f. A Mult-Crcut Patch Panel was nstalled n December 1997, to ncrease trouble-shootng efforts by Techn~al Control. g. The DSS-1 telecommuncatons system was nstalled n May 1997, provdng ncreased connectvty wth multple external/off-shp networks. v h. The NECC software-based system was nstalled, n February 1997, provdng MOUNT WHTNEY wth communcaton ser ces va the Navy EHF Satellte Program (NESP) termnal.
8 8. Augmentee Berthng. A porton of Supply Depart berthng was renovated and converted to 6-man and spaces to support the large number of augmentees durng exercses. The space was ntally confgured as an open-bay berthng wth 168 racks. The renovaton generated 118 G-man staterooms and 3 9-man staterooms.
