4 Our long-time companion, COL John Steiner, has also become a perpetual member. He, Bill Maloney and Larry Willwerth will be sworn in as perpetual members at the next meeting at which they are present. Also waiting to be sworn is CAPT Mary Jo Majors, USN. A fine group of members gathered for the 8 January meeting, a wintry day in Boston. Special recognition is due to CAPT Ed Rainsford, our Guadalcanal veteran, who lets nothing keep him from a meeting and to LTC Kevin Upton, in town from the Washington, DC area. Guests were introduced: COL Charles Hyland, LTG Robert E. Kelley, and Robert McGovern. It can only be said that the occasion was a rare honor for the Chapter. Much credit belongs to both Paul Mawn and Walt Stamper for making the necessary arrangements to bring such a distinguished guest speaker to our Chapter. LTG Tad J. Olestrom, USAF (Ret.), is currently Director of the National Security Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a former Superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy. We were also greatly honored with the presence of LTG Robert E. Kelley, USAF (Ret.), also a former Superintendent of the Air Force Academy. Many thanks to Paul Mawn for his invaluable work in arranging this memorable day. The meeting opened with an invocation, a pledge of allegiance to the flag and a reading of the MOWW Preamble. Chapter Commander LTC Walt Stamper presided. Finance Officer Mike Lavey reported that the Chapter s balances amounted to $8,671. COL Larry Willwerth took the place of the Adjutant who has taken up winter quarters in Georgia. Al Mundo briefed the meeting on the proposed visit to the World War II museum. CAPT Paul Mawn, USN (Ret.), who has been an inspirational leader in positive alumni initiatives at Harvard University, introduced the guest speaker, Lieutenant General Tad Olestrom, USAF (Ret.) of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. General Olestrom gave an informative speech concerning the his role as Director of the National Security Program at the JFK School, the objectives of current programs at the School touching on the topics of public service, political security, executive education, initiatives focused on bringing people of different backgrounds and skills together, and engaging students in topics of national, international and global concern. Following the speech, Walt presented General Olestrom with a Certificate of Appreciation and expressed the gratitude of the Chapter for his taking the time to address the group. Lupfer Our newest perpetual member is 2LT Patrick J. Lupfer, USA, who was commissioned on Saturday, 12 January and became our member on the same date. The officers of the Chapter voted to extend an offer of complimentary perpetual membership to LT Lupfer, the reasons which are fully described in the brochure distributed by the (ROTC) Liberty Battalion of Northeastern University at the ceremony held at Faneuil Hall. Following the commissioning, Bill Maloney made the announcement of the award of perpetual membership to 2LT Lupfer and made a brief speech outlining the history and aims of the Order. LTC Gary Soldato, USA (Ret.), the newly-retired former Professor of Military Science at Northeastern University, and also a perpetual member of the Greater Boston Chapter, was on hand for the swearing in and pinning the bars on LT Lupfer and congratulated him on his achievements in the ROTC program, which occurred principally under LTC Soldato s command. During LTC Soldato s tenure the Liberty Battalion was awarded the coveted MacArthur Award and all of the new officers commissioned on 12 January owe the principal part of their training to Gary Soldato. Also on hand to participate and offer congratulations were Department of Massachusetts Commander, CDR Bob Gillen, Chapter Commander LTC Walt Stamper and Silver Patrick Henry Award Recipient COL John Power (awarded for his patriotic work at Northeastern University). We have reprinted below 2 LT Lupfer s page in the brochure distributed by the Liberty Battalion at the commissioning and it should be easy to understand from it why we are proud to have him as a companion.

Bill was also commissioned out of the rotc program at northeastern university and is a Vietnam veteran having served there with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. CPT Maloney is a recipient of a Silver Patrick Henry Award for his Patriotic work at Northeastern University, with particular reference to the creation of the new Veterans memorial and the leadership of the ROTC Alumni Society. Tuesday, 4 June Chapter Meeting, Union Oyster House. This is the final meeting before our summer adjournment. There will be no speaker. This is our traditional wrap-up for the year and special awards are customarily given at this meeting. Officers will be installed for the new season. Annual Youth Patriotic Leadership Scholarship Appeal: It was a Chapter tradition for those attending a meeting to put $5 in a basket to fund our annual Youth Patriotic Leadership program. With the change in IRS requirements for deductibility of donations, we now ask for checks for $50 (or whatever sum you would like to donate) to support this cause. In brief, the program is conducted by Norwich University with the participation of, and scholarships provided by, MOWW chapters. We are very proud of this program which has been developed by Norwich and LTC Mike Jarvis of the Green Mountain Chapter. Our GB Chapter has led in providing financial support and instructors, notably Bob Gillen, Gerry Hayes, Larry Willwerth and Harry Weinberg. Please send your checks to MOWW, P.O. Box , Boston, MA made payable to Greater Boston Chapter, MOWW. Please note in the memo section of the check that it is a scholarship donation. If you plan to donate to this year s effort, please make a point to do so as soon as possible as the program will soon commence.

9 ADVANCE NOTICE: MAY MEETING: We have heard great things about the Museum of World War II in Natick. Therefore, we have tentatively scheduled a group tour of the Museum in lieu of our regular venue. The Museum admission fee is $25 and we must be at the site and ready to go by 1100, plus or minus. Walt will scout the area for a suitable nearby restaurant so that we can meet for lunch/brunch and have time to move over to the Museum. Much more information will follow. In view of the arrangements for lunch and the tour, there will be no usual business conducted at the meeting. See the next item regarding the necessary rearrangements. NOMINATIONS, ELECTIONS AND INSTALLATIONS: In view of the Museum tour scheduled for May, nominations for next year s officer slate will be pushed up to the March meeting, and elections will be held at the April meeting. Installation of officers will, however, occur on the usual schedule at the June meeting. Please Reserve the Date: Region I Annual Convention - 1 June.
