1 Scenario 2: First Clashes 9-10 September SA Brigade suspected that FAPLA 21 Brigade might try to cross the Lomba river somewhere east of its Gombe confluence. Combat Group Bravo was instructed to monitor the situation and prevent a crossing. FAPLA overall commander must use a D6 to determine the number of companies already across the river, and a D6 to determine the number of tanks already across the river. These are deployed anywhere south of the river but not within 30cm of the south end of the table. The SADF player(s) are not to know the size and composition of the force on the south side of the river. The rest of the FAPLA forces are deployed in the bush north of the river. Supporting artillery batteries need not be deployed as they are considered to be deployed off-table, north of the northern edge of the table. A TMM-bridge is deployed anywhere on the river, but not physically placed on the table until spotted by the opposition. The position should be clearly marked on a map before play commences. The deployed bridge is considered to be very small for spotting purposes, but the moment a vehicle crosses it, it can be spotted using that vehicle s size. Infantry can cross the bridge with no delay while in column, but this may give away the position of the bridge without it having been spotted! This should keep the SADF player guessing as to the exact location of the bridge until actual forces are spotted while crossing it. A second TMM bridge may be deployed during the game, but within the movement, deployment, and spotting parameters of the rule set used. UNITA forces may deploy in cover within spotting and firing range of the FAPLA forces, but must be deployed within the 30cm deep band of the southern table edge. UNITA may not spot enemy on SADF behalf. Only by actually touching the UNITA
2 stand can any SADF element automatically become aware of what that UNITA element has spotted, or attempt to spot it itself. SADF forces will arrive in any order determined by the SADF overall commander on the southern edge of the table and will have the first move. Movement distances are to be measured from the edge of the table. Only one company or armoured platoon may arrive per 1/3 sector of the southern edge per bound. All supporting SADF artillery can be considered to be deployed off-table to the south east of the table. No artillery may fire unobserved. Every target MUST first be spotted. This applies to both sides so there can be no speculative fire. No vehicle can get within 5cm of the river anywhere on its flow across the table without getting bogged down for the duration of the game except when within 5 cm either side of the TMM bridge, where the engineers are assumed to have hardened the area for the purposes of crossing. The ground scale is as normal with 1cm = 20m (50cm = 1km), and the figure scale are 1 model per vehicle, and 1 full stand (4 figures) per section (8-10 men) or ½ stand (2 figures) per team (4-6 men). Time scale is 1 full turn (all players had 1 bound each) equals 5 minutes of real time. The time for the first turn is at 06h00. The turn sequence is UNITA, SADF, then FAPLA in turns, until a result is reached or there is no more time to play the game agreed to by mutual consensus. Victory Points can be calculated as follows at the end of the game: FAPLA gains 10VP for every SADF element and 5VP for every SADF vehicle destroyed or captured, and 2VP for each UNITA element destroyed or captured. FAPLA also gets 2VP for every intact FAPLA element or vehicle remaining south of the river. UNITA gets 2VP for each FAPLA element or vehicle captured or destroyed, and 2VP for each UNITA element that survived the fighting. SADF gets 2 VP for each FAPLA element or vehicle destroyed or captured on the south bank, or while crossing the Lomba river, and 1VP for each FAPLA element or vehicle destroyed on the north bank. It also loses 5VP for each SADF element or vehicle lost Actual Forces involved: SADF (All Veteran): [Call Signs] # men Combat Group Bravo, Cmdt Robbie Hartslief 1 Ratel-Command [B0] Commander Pappa Battery
