1 Vol.41 Issue 77 October 2016 President s Message We had a joint dinner in September with Broward Council with a full room at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club. We continue the tradition of hosting this meeting as Sea Cadet Night. It is an amazing opportunity for all of us to hear about the experiences of the Cadets during summer training all over the country. We have to recognize the dedication of this young men and women who commit their time during summer to continue their education. We extend our appreciation to LCDR Alan M. Starr, Commanding Officer, and the Staff, for preparing these Cadets for all the challenges that they will face in their future. We attended the ceremony at the City of Fort Lauderdale for the recognition of the late Chuck Black as 2016 Citizen of the Year. Two important events will take place during this month. On October 15th, at Hollywood Beach, we will have the Annual 5K Run/Walk to benefit Wounded Warrior Project and Fort Lauderdale Sea Cadets. Every year Lynn Drucker and the Sea Cadets, Parents and Staff put together this program with sponsors to help to raise funds for the continued education of our Cadets. On October 19 th, we will celebrate Oktoberfest at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Thanks to our Board Member, Alan Stotsky, for putting together the celebration with the Club. We remember, during this month, the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the USS COLE, where 17 sailors were killed. Thank you to all of our members for your continued support of our Sea Services. HAPPY 241th BIRTHDAY to our US NAVY!! 7 View From the Bridge September 2016 The Cadets of the Spruance Division and Radford Training ship proudly celebrated the 54 rd Anniversary of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and honored National Sea Cadet Month by speaking at the joint Navy League Dinner with our sponsoring Fort Lauderdale NL Council, and Broward County Council. Our Cadets presented Colors and 5 of our Cadets prepared and spoke from Power Point Presentations on the unique Summer Trainings they attended. We are very grateful to the Fort Lauderdale Council, and the individuals who sponsored our Cadets that enabled them to Experience the Adventure of a Lifetime! The Fort Lauderdale Council presented the Navy League Teddy Roosevelt Medal to Petty Officer First Class Gabriel Green for outstanding leadership as our Leading Petty Officer. The Medal was presented by LT Mark Ketchum, Commander of Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale, who spoke of Seaman Apprentice Scheiner who spent almost the whole summer training at Station Fort Lauderdale. The X.O. and Duty Boat Crew came out to support Cadet Scheiner, Petty Officers from Navy Recruiting District Miami, and Sailors from US Southern Command enjoyed hearing of our Cadets adventures. All commented on how impressed they were with the Training completed, and the Military Bearing of all of our Cadets. We had Cadets attend over 90 Summer Training sessions this year all over the country, from Puerto Rico, to Seattle and on to Portland Maine. SCPO Starr participated with the Miami Area Chiefs Mess in the Training of 15 Sailors selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer. CPO 365 Training was held weekly at Spruance Division Headquarters after hours for Chief Selects from US Southern Command, Navy Recruiting, and the NOSC in Miami, and West Palm Beach. SCPO Starr participated in the Pinning Ceremony for the new Chiefs at US Southern Command HQ. Please come out and support our Cadets at our annual fundraiser, the 5 th Annual Pursuit of Honor Courage, and Commitment 5K Run, on Hollywood Beach on the 15 th of October. This Run benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, and our Cadets of Spruance Division, US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Respectfully submitted, LCDR Alan M. Starr, NSCC, Commanding Officer NAVY LEAGUE NEWS 7
