Volume Issue 1 August September October Welcome to the new high school! I hope to see the new cadets participating and enjoying the JROTC program. I m happy to see more cadets becoming involved. Good luck to everyone this year! - C/1SGT Carrie Butkiewicz The Cadet includes the following: Staff Camp CHS Fish Camp. Skeet Shoot. POW/MIA Day. Pep Squad. Homecoming Upcoming events New Rifle Range Color Guard The Cadet An insight to the Cougar Battalion: Back to start another great year August 29 th marks the beginning in a newly built high school for the school year. An estimated total of 100 cadets enrolled in the JROTC program for this year. We welcome back all of our Cougar Cadets, especially the new cadets that decided to join us. Welcome to the Cougar Battalion and always remember that we are SECOND TO NONE! Fresh Start As a Crosby student, and especially as a JROTC cadet it is expected of you to do well in all your classes. Take advantage of this fresh start, especially for new incoming cadets. High School marks the beginning of a new journey, one that will determine your future and follow you throughout your life. Make wise choices! Don t be someone who strays off into the wrong path, be someone whom is recognized for success and achievements here at Crosby High School. We re more than just a class with uniform. It is more than just wearing the uniform on Tuesdays or marching around and learning basic drill moves. JROTC is an organization that not only disciplines you, but also gives you the basics skills and knowledge to become a leader and a successful citizen for your future. However it doesn t stop there. Aside from that we have a variety of teams that you can become apart of, so be sure to sign up! Teams: Pep-Squad, PT, Rifle, Orienteering, Color Guard, and CERT
Staff Camp The week of August 2 nd through 4 th Crosby JROTC attended Staff Camp at Stephen F. Austin High school. Crosby JROTC learned how to improve their color guard skills and staff positions with the help of other cadets and directors.
CHS Fish Camp: C/SGT Upchurch and Leatherwood encourage incoming freshman to sign up for JROTC as well as giving them a look at the new rifle range. The Crosby JROTC Staff along with Crosby Student Council, Crosby Stars, and Cheer volunteered to help with the Fish Camp at the new Crosby High School. They provided services by giving tours to the incoming freshman and explaining the layout of the new high school.
Skeet Shoot: On August 27 th, 2016, Crosby JROTC volunteered to help at the Liberty Skeet Shoot. The cadets greeted the shooters, pulled the birds, kept score, policed the stations and enforced safety in the general area. I love doing events like this one. I always have a great time serving the community. - C/SGT Mason Leatherwood
POW-MIA On September 16 th, Crosby JROTC attended the annual POW-MIA ceremony. JROTC Color Guard presenting the colors during the POW-MIA ceremony Prisoners of War- Missing in Action Table set up -What s the symbolism? A round table for five is set up, each representing one of our branches of the military. A white table cloth is used to show the purity of each individual as they defend our country. In the middle of the table there is a red rose, symbolism of the blood they may have shed and the love of their families. There is also a candle to signify the light of hope we all have in our hearts for them to return. On each plate there is a sliced lemon along with a pinch of salt, the lemon reminds of the bitter fate they all had, while the salt reminds of the unlimited fallen tears of their families as they await for them. Lastly the glass is inverted and the chair is empty, they can not toast with us, they are no longer here.
Pep- Squad The cadets run before and after the game, and during each touchdown with flags spelling the word cougars for school pride. This is a photo of the current team commanders. Jennifer Upchurch (left), and her co-commander Juan Rodarte (right)
Homecoming Alexandria Hohn volunteered to give Cody Dubose s family flowers in remembrance of him. Pep Squad commander, Jennifer Upchurch, and Big Flag runner, Parker Smith, waved the flag during the Homecoming Pep Rally.
Thoughts on the New Rifle Range I have been anticipating a new rifle range since before Freshman year. -1SGT Carrie Butkiewicz I think the new Rifle Range is a huge upgrade from the one last year. It s clean, air conditioned, and we get to make it our own. SGT Brittany King
