2 Corps Role in Navigation 1824 authority to clear snags and make improvements Canal building era to mid-1800s (states) Post Civil War suction dredging, jetties 1885: 1st of 46 locks and dams on Ohio 1930s: Present system of locks constructed on Upper Miss, Illinois, Tennessee and other waterways 1950s: Construction starts on present-day higher lift locks on Ohio 1960s-70s: Navigation improvements to Columbia-Snake, Arkansas River 1985: Tenn-Tom Waterway completed

6 NAVIGATION Waterborne commerce tons, trips, origin and destination contributes to a healthy economy Maintain the functionality of the waterway - LOCKS - Make the waterway useable by creating pools of water for vessels to navigate - DREDGING - Make the river bottom deeper for vessels to navigate

7 Dredging Information System The DIS is a national database that tracks all Corps of Engineers performed and contracted dredging from pre-bid announcement to contract completion Data are entered into a central database by District personnel DIS is maintained and supported by IWR Navigation Data Center
