My name is Dick Tollefson and I have been elected as Post Commander for the year First I would like to thank Carla Tappainer for her past three (3) years as Post Commander. The Post has thrived under her leadership and I hope I can continue on the same path. I would also like to thank Joe Tappainer for his help in transitioning from one Commander to the next. This report will be shorter than usual because I will be Installed at the General Membership meeting on June 19th and this column is due to be sent in on June 20th to the newsletter. So, very little happened during that time. A couple of things that I do know are we are having a Car Show in the Post s South Parking lot and adjacent street south of that parking lot s entrance on Friday, June29th. And I m sure everyone knows or has heard that we are about to have our biggest fund raiser of the Post year. It will be known as the Freedom Day s Celebration (4th of July ). It will be on Wednesday July 4th. Please plan on attending and enjoy a great parade and a lot of food and beverages on the grass south of the Post parking lot and pavilion. There will be baked chicken parts this year instead of barbecued chicken halves, and also pulled pork sandwiches along with the sides of cole slaw, baked beans and other condiments UNTIL NEXT MONTH COMMANDER DICK! Contact Us info@post1776.com TBA No report this month. web site at Scouting Report Flag Day June 14th 1 st Vice Commander Post 1776 held their Flag Day ceremony on Flag Day, June 14 th. It is a time to demonstrate respect for our flag and dispose of those flags which have served in a most respectful and dignified manner. We've posted photos and videos of the ceremony at our Welcome Aboard! I would like to say Congratulations to all of the new & changing Officers for the Post. We have many new & some old faces in different positions for the following year. It will take us awhile to learn all of our duties of these new positions, but we are all eager to serve our fellow Veterans and we know you will be there to support us. So, Welcome Aboard to all of these people that have stepped forward to continue the successes of this Post. Post 1776 has a history of Community Outreach & Community Building. We do a lot of valuable things for Veterans, Schools, Scout Units and Youth groups. I don t see any reason why this will change. I hope you will all be a part of this great tradition. This is the main reason that I joined Post We make lasting impressions on everyone that walks through our front door. We leave lasting positive feelings and thoughts on those we assist. This is the type of organization of which I want to be a part. This is why I joined this Post. 3 Gambling ReporT Once again, another month has come and gone; it seems like each month goes faster and faster. As we head into the summer months it's time to recharge our engines and plan for the rest of the year! Maybe, just maybe this will be the year you attend your first meeting, or even try your hand at being a VOLUNTEER! Don't forget that it's the Officers that YOU elect and the members at the Post meetings that determine how this Post is run. Another month of helping Veterans and the Community thanks to all of the people that keep the gals in the Booth hopping, and the Bingo employees hopping! A big thank you to all of you. This month our main recipients of funds were for the City of Apple Valley with help with the summer event Music in the Park held free of charge at Kelly Park, and the 4th of July (which for some crazy reason they want to call it Freedom Days). As this Newsletter goes to press, we have already installed our new Commander and Officers for the coming year; let's all get behind them and make this year memorable. Our Post is only as strong as the Officers in office and the people we get to assist in Operations, so hope to see you soon! No bickering and bar b****ing about the Post. If that describes you then it just shows that you probably have not taken an active role in any Post activities. That is where attending meetings comes in, And not just the one meeting a year, the elections meeting, where we get the most robust turn out for the General Election. He has done an incredible job for our Post and has been the #1 recruiter for new members in Minnesota for the last four years. This past year John was 4 th runner up in recruiting new members nationwide and was recognized by the American Legion's National Organization for his tremendous proactive contribution in recruitment for our Post and our Veterans. John took the Post to 1041 members and blew away our goal of 881 members for Thanks to John's efforts, Post 1776 is the 2 nd largest post in Minnesota. 4 Beyond The Yellow Ribbon The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network of Apple Valley exists to serve military personnel both those currently serving and Veterans - and their families, by assisting them any way we can. Your help and support has been and continues to be very much appreciated! Please join us by contributing your time and talents, using the special abilities you have. Some recent examples of how we have served: 1. This past month we have provided a food card to a Veteran in need and worked with another BTYR to assist a Veteran s family with lawn service. If you know of a military family needing help, or you or another Veteran needing assistance, please contact us The next Appreciation Dinner is August 16th. Note there is no dinner in July. We partner with the Legion to provide excellent meals, which the BTYR serves to Veterans for a voluntary donation. Preregistration is encouraged so we don t run out of food. Get a free flag! 4. Two events in August to let you know about. First is the Dakota County Fair. Military Day is Wednesday, August 8 th. And, we will be selling brats and dogs at the Apple Valley Von Hanson s on August 18 & 19 th. 5. Historian Report As the new Historian for Post 1776, my first project is to organize existing photo DVDs and to scan the thousands of photos taken at past Post events. My plan is to create a digital archive that can be checked out here at the post and online over the Internet. The last two newsletters have been delayed getting to yoru mailbox on time for a couple of reasons (Memorial Day being one of them and a printer equipment failure back in May) and we are working with the printer on getting a quicker turn around from the time the newsletter is submitted to them to the time it arrives in your mailbox.
