1 South Grand Prairie High School National Honor Society Bylaws 1. SELECTION 1.1. Membership is limited to members of the senior class. Juniors will be considered for membership during their spring semester Candidates must have been in attendance at SGPHS for at least one full semester Minimum scholastic requirement for membership is a cumulative grade point average of at least Eligible candidates shall be evaluated by the Faculty Council on the basis of character, scholarship, service and leadership as evidenced in the application process 1.5. A National Honor Society member who transfers from another school and brings a verification letter from the former principal or school advisor shall automatically be accepted as a member of the SGPHS chapter in accordance with the NHS Constitution Foreign exchange students will be taken on a case-by-case basis. 2. OFFICER SELECTION 2.1. Seven (7) officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the membership. These officers comprise the Executive Board. These officers are: President First Vice President Second Vice President First Secretary Second Secretary Treasurer Historian 2.2. In the event of a tie, the Faculty Council will determine how to break the tie. 3. OFFICER DUTIES 3.1. Officers should attend all functions whenever possible. At least ONE officers should be in attendance at all functions. Should be at all meetings 5 minutes early (executive and general). If going to be late, should notify the executive board as well as the advisor(s). If an officer misses three activities in one semester, that officer may be dismissed from the Executive Board and a replacement appointed by the Executive Board and Chapter Advisor(s). 2 3.2. Plan and conduct all meetings in such a manner that members time is well spent Direct business affairs of the chapter Make recommendations concerning bylaws, time and place of meetings, special projects and member obligations Specific duties of each officer are as follows: President Maintain close communication with the faculty advisor(s) Preside at meetings Be responsible for turning in announcements Serve as the main speaker for the fall and spring inductions Maintain communication with the other officers Coordinate activities Provide written agendas to members at every membership and officer meeting First Vice President Preside at meetings in absence of President Plan and coordinate service projects Coordinate service committees and appoint members to help with these projects Second Vice President Plan social activities Coordinate social committees and appoint members to help with these activities First Secretary Take roll at meetings Record any service points earned and post them to the website Keep probation list current Write probation and removal letters and present to sponsor for signature before delivering them to students Second Secretary Assist 1 st secretary as needed Take minutes of each meeting in an organized manner Serve as chairman of the telephone/ committee Keep all members informed of activities Update calendar on website Post minutes and agenda of each meeting on website Treasurer Accept payments and assist the sponsors with maintaining accurate financial records Maintain a record of all incoming monies and outgoing expenses for the year.
3 Coordinate fundraisers Write thank you notes and other correspondence as needed Historian Document through photos, etc., events of NHS Keep a scrapbook of chapter activities Update bulletin board monthly and keep calendar up to date Write thank you notes Committees shall be appointed as deemed appropriate by the Chapter Advisor(s) or the Executive Board for the general operation of the chapter. 4. ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP 4.1. Active members shall pay annual dues as set by the Executive Board and Chapter Advisor(s) at the time of the induction All active members must attend regularly scheduled meetings as well as special meetings as designated by the Executive Board Meetings shall be held every two weeks at a regularly designated place and time unless members are otherwise notified All members must regularly participate in designated community service projects All members should participate in fund-raising A point system designed by the Executive Board will be used to monitor each member s participation. These points represent minimum standards for continued active membership Any member who misses more than one meeting in a nine weeks grading period, will be placed on probation Any member who does not wear the appropriate attire of polo shirt and khakis the entire day of a meeting will not receive credit for attendance at said meeting Any member who misses a mandatory event will be placed on probation Excused absences may be granted from activities by the Chapter Advisor(s). 5. SERVICE PROJECTS 5.1. At least one project must be open to participation by the entire membership The chapter will provide a variety of service activities to fulfill the requirements of the NHS Constitution Members are allowed to complete half of the required service points as outside points, but must be granted approval by Chapter Advisor(s) before the activity is decided All projects must be pre-approved by the Executive Board and Chapter Advisor(s) to receive service points.
4 5.5. Mandatory projects require the approval of the Chapter Advisor(s) When designating a project as mandatory, an alternate activity must be available for those members, deemed by the Chapter Advisor(s) to have a valid excuse. 6. EARLY GRADUATION 6.1. Members must be in good standing and in participate a full semester in order to receive stole upon graduation In the event that a member who was inducted in the fall graduates at the semester mark, they must be in participation a nine weeks beyond graduation in order to fulfill their requirement. Minimum documentation of 10 hours of service Any member that graduates early must be in good standing with the Chapter in order to remain in Active status. 7. PROBATION 7.1. Failure to maintain membership standards, which include: Meeting attendance requirements (75% per grading period) Timely completion and submission of service points Participation in mandatory activities will result in probation of the member for one nine weeks grading period Student is placed in ISS (In School Suspension) for any duration If the member complies with all membership standards during the next grading period, he/she will automatically be returned to active status If a member is put on probation for not meeting the point (service) requirement for that grading period, the member will be required to make up the missed points from the previous grading period as well as maintain the standard for points designated for the grading period the member is on probation. Make up point must be made up after regular points for that grading period If a member is put on probation for lack of meeting attendance, the member will be required to work one hour for the school for every meeting missed. The service in school will be decided on by the Executive Board and Chapter Advisor(s) If a member is put on probation due to lack of mandatory point, the member will be required to acquire one point beyond the set amount of points the next grading period. During the probationary period, if the member does not meet these standards, he/she will be subject to dismissal. 7.3 Any member who is on probation or has been dismissed at the time of graduation may not wear collar and cords at graduation. 8. INACTIVE STATUS 8.1. Members who do not maintain a 3.66 GPA will automatically be placed on inactive status until their GPA improves to 3.66 or higher.
5 8.2. Inactive status will be noted on the permanent school transcript Inactive members will not be allowed to wear any NHS emblem. 9. DISMISSAL A member will be subject to dismissed from the National Honor Society for: 9.1. Failure to maintain the standards for selection or for failure to correct an inactive or probationary designation within one grading period Failure to maintain membership standards and being placed on probation a second occurrence during the school year will automatically be dismissed Flagrant violations of the school rules or civil law Member shall have a right to a hearing before the Faculty Council. A request for a hearing must be submitted in writing, to the sponsor, within ten (10) days of notification A member who is dismissed from the National Honor Society may appeal the decision through routine district disciplinary appeals process. The appeal must be submitted in writing, to the sponsor, within ten (10) days of dismissal. 10. ATTITUDE All National Honor Society members are: Expected to have a respectful relationship with all members of the school staff, the principal and the Chapter Advisor(s) Expected to maintain a high standard of honor and character Encouraged to be active in other organizations Encouraged to be supportive of all students and school activities
