2 What is postgraduate study? Postgraduate Certificate (1 year) and Diploma (2 years) Honours 1 year after a Bachelor s Usually 3 papers + dissertation Masters PhD Coursework papers only, possibly with a research component Research 1 year of papers then 1 year research or 1 year research only (e.g., if have an Honours degree) Entry from Honours or Master s degree (providing at least ¼ is research) with grade point average of B+ or better 3-4 year research degree Professional doctorate (e.g., EdD, DMA, DClinDent)

4 Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculations A+ = 9 A = 8 A- = 7 B+ = 6 B = 5 B- = 4 C+ = 3 C = 2 C- = 1 The cumulative GPA for a year is calculated by multiplying the grade point for each paper by the number of points for that paper and averaging across that level If you look at your academic record in evision you will see a cumulative GPA for each level. To be in scholarship contention, really you will need a GPA for 300, 400 or 500 level of over 7, preferably 8 or higher (especially for prestigious Universities NZ scholarships)

7 The Rhodes Scholarship To Oxford University in the United Kingdom One of the most prestigious scholarships for real stars! 62 Otago winners since 1904; ten doubles including 2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013 Value stipend of 14,276 per year living allowance plus college and university fees and air travel at start and end of scholarship Usually used to fund one or two years of Master s or Doctoral study Eligibility criteria include age (no older than 25 by 1 October 2019, or for MBChB no older than 26), NZ citizen or British subject with > 5 y in NZ, complete at least a Bachelor s degree by October 2019

The will of Cecil Rhodes outlines four criteria to be used in the election of Scholars: literary and scholastic attainments (need high GPA) energy to use one's talents to the full truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship (i.e. strong and sustained evidence of volunteering) moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings Online application process closes Monday 16 July 2018 For more details on the application process come to the Rhodes Scholarship Information Session - Wednesday 23 May 2018, midday to 1pm in Room 55U213, School of Physical Education

9 Woolf Fisher Scholarship Another top scholarship; Otago has had 5 since 2010 Approximate value of NZ$100,000 per year For PhD study at Cambridge University Three or four year tenure depending on the course Highly academic (recommend A average first class honours degree compulsory) but also requires good interpersonal and interview skills Future contribution to New Zealand important A good choice for Science and Commerce students in particular Applications to Universities New Zealand by 1 August Up to three scholarships offered nationally per year

10 Prince of Wales Cambridge International Scholarship Fees plus an allowance sufficient for a single person For PhD study at Cambridge University Maximum three year tenure Highly academic (A+ level grades recommended) Two referees No interview If shortlisted by Universities New Zealand Scholarships Committee, applications are sent to Cambridge for final selection (decision around May/June) Applications to Universities New Zealand by 1 October

11 William Georgetti Scholarship Variable value up to $45,000 per year for overseas study plus a contribution towards fees Tenable in New Zealand or overseas, for Masters or PhD study Maximum three year tenure An A or A+ grade average recommended All disciplines research in a field important to the social, cultural or economic development of New Zealand (broad interpretation) Applications to Universities New Zealand by 1 March Number awarded varies, but usually up to four scholarships awarded per year

Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships for study at Harvard Kiwi Music scholarship - Classical instrumental performance (including vocal performance) or conducting. Todd Foundation Awards for Excellence - encourage the development of new concepts, technology or research which will benefit New Zealand

14 Cambridge-Rutherford Memorial Scholarships Administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand on behalf of the Rutherford Foundation Trust. Two scholarships for PhD study at Cambridge University in the areas of pure or applied science (including social science), providing University and College Fees, 13,900 allowance per year and annual return airfares. Three year maximum tenure Selection based on academic excellence, engagement with science and technology, and commitment to New Zealand Applications to the Royal Society of New Zealand by 4 August

15 Provide funding for citizens of developed Commonwealth countries (i.e. NZ) for PhD study in the UK All subject areas are eligible but preference is given to those applications that demonstrate potential for strategic impact To be eligible you must be able to start academic study in UK by Sept/Oct 2018 or Jan 2019 Closing date: 22 May

16 Fulbright New Zealand General Graduate Awards Initially for one year (US $40,000 plus NZ $4,000 travel funding) but with the opportunity for a second year of scholarship (US $30,000) Winning this award can further help with securing additional funding from USbased institutions For postgraduate study in the United States Selection based on academic excellence, leadership potential and ambassadorial qualities Any field (Fulbright New Zealand also have other subject-specific awards e.g., natural disaster research; indigenous development; science and innovation) Applications to Fulbright New Zealand by 1 August Selection interviews in Wellington in September Decision made in October

17 Prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The selection criteria are: o outstanding intellectual ability o leadership potential o a commitment to improving the lives of others o a good fit between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying

18 The success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China s role in global trends. A one year scholarship to complete a Master s Degree in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China Three broad fields: Public Policy, Economics and Business, International Studies but students can be from any disciplinary background Looking create change at a global scale; leadership potential as important as high GPA Fully funded scholarship: return airfares, residential college and tuition fee costs, additional living costs allowance More information at:

19 Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders' Fellowship Fund Postgraduate research scholarships for kiwis To provide the opportunity to study at any New Zealand University for graduate students at the research stage of their programmes Selection based on students who have an excellent academic record and who have displayed potential for future leadership in national, regional and international affairs Recipients will receive a scholarship of $25,000 per annum for a Doctoral degree or $15,000 for a Master s degree. Scholars will also be awarded grants to cover all compulsory fees, and approved research expenses up to $5,000 p.a. Applications close 1 October

20 Application tips Don t put all your eggs in one basket - Applying for two scholarships double the work - With interviews, practice makes perfect Read the guidelines/regulations and address criteria in your application! Check your eligibility many have citizenship and age criteria criteria for applying AND criteria for holding the scholarship Research the scholarship treat it like a job application; significant funding is often involved

Required application information Address the requirements make links between your experiences and the criteria clear Ensure you have all the information required (but not extra) Can you discuss your honour s/master s and proposed study in layman s terms, and make someone else interested in your work? If the application requires a study plan (for either coursework or thesis work), do your research, draw on references and ensure this section is done with care Personal statement usually about a page; give funders a sense of who you are. Ensure good grammar and spelling!

22 Application tips (cont.) Submitting your documentation Ensure have correct documents and upload in a logical way Don t leave it to the last minute! Referees Choose your referees carefully Send them an up-to-date CV to help them write the letter Request that they: Target their letter to the scholarship and pay attention to criteria Remember to comment on your general character and leadership ability/potential as this could make the difference

24 Summary Choose to apply for a scholarship or scholarships based on your possible study aspirations Formulate a plan of attack Read regulations and guidelines Contact potential supervisors Select referees Don t forget the personal statement Consider applying for multiple scholarships It is not that much extra work if you re already applying for one Carpe diem!
