Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation eednews ISSUE 1, FY 2019 OCTOBER 2018 Dear Phi Chi Theta Members, Alumni, and Friends, SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: 2018 Scholarship Winners Trustee Spotlight Fundraising Efforts INSIDE THIS ISSUE: 1 Letter from the President Scholarship Winners 3 Interview with 2018 winner Katie Pierce, Zeta Lambda 5 FY 2019 Fundraising Goals 6 Inside the National Meeting Scholarships 7 Meet the Trustees 8 Donor Form The Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation has already had a busy year, and it has only just begun (FY 19). Several Trustees attended the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity National Meeting where they presented an overview of the Foundation as well as awarded scholarships. Due to the charity of our members, we were able to raise $700+ from t-shirt and raffle ticket sales. We would like to give special thanks to Saundra Finley and Jay Cho from the National Fraternity Office, who helped create the t-shirt design. At the Awards Banquet, we were excited to present four scholarships totaling $5,000. With of all the great National Meeting programming, the Trustees were not prepared for the big surprise at the Awards Banquet: we received a check from the Fraternity for $51,000 to fully endow the Anna E. Hall and Helen D. Snow scholarships. $25,000 will be invested in each account and $1,000 will go towards the 2019 scholarship offering. We are profoundly thankful for the generosity and trust of the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity. The future is looking great for the Educational Foundation! We are happy to have these new endowments to generate future scholarships. However, we are still raising funds for the Kay Durden Scholarship endowment, in memory and honor of our Past National President. Our goal is to reach $20,000 by We have more than $12,000 raised but need your help for the remaining $8,000 in the next two years. Additionally, we have another goal to reach for our 2019 scholarship program: we are raising funds for the Irene D. Meyer Memorial Scholarship. Irene was another past National President of Phi Chi Theta. The current fund is just over $700. We would like have $1,000 so that we can award a scholarship in her memory in To donate, see the donor form included in this newsletter, or go to Individuals will receive a letter that can be used for a tax deduction. Chapters will receive 40 award points on the National Calendar of Due Dates. The giving season is coming up, please don t forget us when making your year-end donations! Besides help with fundraising, the foundation could also use your talents on its various committee. We run social media, have a scholarship selection committee, a finance committee, produce bi-annual newsletters, etc. we are reliant on volunteers. If you are interested in helping the foundation or becoming a trustee, please contact foundationprez@phichitheta.org for more information. Fraternally, Missy Bolin Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation President 1

Interview with Katie Pierce, 2018 Lester F. Richardson Memorial Scholarship Winner Katie Pierce is a Senior at Ohio University majoring in Finance, with a certificate in International Business. She is originally from Irwin, Pennsylvania, a suburb just outside of Pittsburgh. In Katie s free time, she enjoys playing volleyball and traveling to new cities. After she graduates, Katie plans to work in management consulting. During her time in PCT, Katie has held several roles. In her first year, she served as the Social Director for her pledge class and a Pledge Assistant to the Pledge Educator. During her second year, she was chosen to be the Director of Recruitment and the following year was elected as the External Vice President. Q: How did you hear about the scholarship? A: When our regional director, Justin Petty, came on campus to meet with our chapter he stressed the importance of applying for the national scholarships. He told us that not enough members take advantage of the opportunity and that the Foundation wants to award members who are putting a lot of effort into bettering the fraternity. Q: What was your first reaction when you heard that you d won? A: When I first heard I won the scholarship, I was overwhelmed with excitement and incredibly thankful. I was thankful that someone wanted to support PCT members financially by donating money for the scholarships, and I was thankful that my work and passion for the organization was acknowledged by the Education Foundation. It means a lot to me to know that what I do for PCT is not only being recognized in Athens, OH, but also on a national level. Q: How will this scholarship help you? A: I am paying for my education at Ohio University, so this scholarship will assist me in paying off my college debt. Q: What advice would you give to others applying for the scholarship next year? A: I think that people should apply for the scholarship because it gives you time to reflect on what you have done for Phi Chi Theta. I hadn t realized how much I was able to accomplish, and in turn how much I was able to grow until I wrote about everything I had done from the time I first joined the program as a pledge, to my current position as the External Vice President. Even if you have not held a leadership position, you should apply for the scholarships if you have added value in any way to the organization. While writing my answers to the questions and essays, I not only talked about how I was able to grow and develop my leadership skills, but how my actions directly impacted others in PCT. I talked about how I added value in their lives from the feedback they gave me. 3

Q: What did you write about in your essay? Why? A: In my essay I wrote about the concept of servant leadership, and how I have shown servant leadership throughout my time in Phi Chi Theta. I think that this is an important topic because many people in business can abuse the power they have in an organization and not be mindful of others when they act. Throughout my essay I noted times when I tried to better relate to the members of my fraternity to truly understand their issues and values to then solve current problems within our chapter. Q: How do you think PCT has prepared you for life after college? A: The most important way PCT has prepared me for life after college is providing me a network. I never realized the impact that networking has until I started reaching out to Alumni within the fraternity. Not only was I able to get my on-campus job through Phi Chi networking, but also my internship this past summer. Networking is all about building relationships both professionally and personally. I was also able to establish friendships that will last beyond my graduation from Ohio University. Q: How do you plan to stay involved with PCT as an alum? A: As an alum, I want to stay involved by being a main point of contact for my graduating class. I want to donate to chapter events and attend our yearly Founder s Day. If I am lucky enough, I would even like to speak at Founder s Day one year to talk about how the skills I learned in Phi Chi Theta were transferrable to my first post-grad job. Q: Any other advice you can give us? A: Advice I would give to any PCT member is to try to step outside of your comfort zone and run for a position in your chapter or at the national level. Even if you are not elected to the position, try again! I tried three times before I was elected into an officer position. Also, continue to always use your PCT network. Do not be afraid to reach out to Alumni. Everyone was once in your shoes, and Phi Chi s will always help out another Phi Chi! The Lester F. Richard Memorial Scholarship was made possible by a gracious endowment from Mr. Richardson s daughter, Dr. Danity Little. 4

FY 2019 Fundraising Goals Every year, the Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation reviews its budget and decides on annual fundraising goals. These goals range from raising money for operating funds, to raising contributions for scholarships. Dr. Kay A. Durden Memorial Endowment In the fall of 2016, the trustees set a goal to endow all of our scholarships. We understood that this will take both time and hard work, but immediately got to work. We decided to first endow the Dr. Kay A. Durden Memorial Scholarship. We need $20,000. The interest earned will be used to fund the scholarship in perpetuity, while the initial investment will remain intact to continue to earn interest to fund future scholarship awards. To date, $12,000+ has been raised. We need to raise the remaining $8,000 in the next two years! To continue requires your help. The Foundation relies on its trustees, members, family, and corporate matching funds for donations. It also relies on our collegiate chapters to assist in fundraising. What can you do to help us reach our goals? Irene D. Meyer Memorial Scholarship Fundraising The Irene D. Meyer Memorial Scholarship fund started off with a healthy amount of money and $7,000 in scholarships have been awarded in her name. It is easy to see why she was National President of the Fraternity from , and well known to Phi Chi Theta members of the day. Even before holding the highest national officer position, she held many leadership positions in her chapter and as an alumni member, she was a two-term North Central District Director (which we now call Regional Director). She was an active alumni member for over 40 years. When she passed away, it was natural for her friends, family, and PCT members to honor her with a memorial scholarship in her name. However, over the years, as time has passed, the funds have dwindled. We would like award a final scholarship of $1,000 in Irene Meyer s name. Closing the Meyer account will allow the Foundation to have more operational efficiency and focus on larger invested accounts. Although the scholarship fund will be closed out, we will always be thankful to Irene D. Meyer and her many years of contributions to the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity. If you would like to donate to the Meyer fund, please send a donation restricted to her name. *Please note that when we reach $1,000 in the fund, we will put all excess donations into the Dr. Kay A. Durden Memorial Endowment. 5

Inside the National Meeting Annette Stewart, Foundation Secretary and Trustee, had the opportunity to attend the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity National Meeting and writes about how the Foundation engaged at the meeting. This year s National Meeting was hosted in the great city Wichita, Kansas. We were provided an excellent agenda that provided many wonderful opportunities to learn a variety of topics from risk management to general Chapter event ideas. We also had some free time to see the fast-growing city of Wichita. I was fortunate to be a part of this meeting as a Foundation Trustee, surrounded by other wonderful Trustees, Alumni and Collegiate members. The Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation had great visibility at the meeting through the colorful display of yellow bricks and a variety of raffle prizes which filled a table by the room entrance. Foundation President, Missy Bolin, led a collective group of Foundation Trustees in presenting the Foundation s purpose and the awards available. Our Foundation Trustees were visible through selling raffle tickets, presenting information on the Foundation, and most importantly, in giving out financial awards to well deserving students. Foundation Trustee, Elise Kidd, who provided real time social media coverage on Twitter and Facebook with the help of member Jay Cho, added to the overall presence of the Foundation at the National Meeting. All Foundation Trustees wore badges stating their role in the Foundation and made a point of getting to know the collegiate members present. During the final award ceremony, we were fortunate to grant four scholarships to well deserving Phi Chi Theta students. The key message, shared repeatedly, is for students to apply. The Foundation shared its goal of giving as much money possible to our excellent Phi Chi Theta students to further their educations. Looking forward to our next National Meeting, upcoming Regional Meetings, and giving more awards! Please remember to apply YOU could be the next award recipient! 7 2019 Scholarships The Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation will award scholarships again in awards will take place at the Regional Meetings throughout the summer.
