Department of Education in Science and Mathematics The NCERT carries out research, development, training, evaluation and extension activities in Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education from the primary to the senior secondary stage. It organises the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children. It is involved in the development of model syllabi and teaching-learning materials in Science and Mathematics for upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. The main functions of the Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM) are to carry out research, development, training, evaluation and extension activities related to science, mathematics and environmental education from the upper primary to the higher secondary stage. A significant area of the department s work has been development of syllabi, textbooks and other instructional materials in science, mathematics and environmental education. The Instructional Material Centre of the department undertakes dissemination of information on all aspects of science, mathematics and environmental education. This is done through organisation of various activities such as Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition, promotion of State Level Science Exhibitions, the science park and through School Science A Quarterly Journal of NCERT. In order to strengthen science and mathematics education in the States and UTs, a major activity of the department is to organise teacher orientation programmes and training of master trainers. The department also develops popular science materials; innovative laboratory practices ANNUAL REPORT

2 in science and mathematics and organises out-of-school activities in science. Every year, the department organises the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC), which is the culmination of the series of science exhibitions for children, organised at district, zonal and state levels. Major Activities of the Department during RESEARCH The department carried out a research project on Improvisation and Development of Laboratory Techniques for Morphological Studies in Plants for Higher Secondary Stage. DEVELOPMENT Based on the National Curriculum Framework 2005 textbooks of Science and Mathematics for Classes VII and X have been developed in English and Hindi versions. For higher secondary stage, textbooks of Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics for Class XII have been developed in English and Hindi Versions. An Urdu version of these textbooks is also being developed in collaboration with the Media Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. TRAINING AND EXTENSION A series of face-to-face orientation programmes on NCERT s new textbooks for master trainers of CBSE-affiliated schools of National Capital Region (NCR) were organised during the months of May June 2006 and February- March 2007 at upper primary and secondary levels in the areas of Science and Mathematics. The department also organised orientation programmes for Master Trainers on NCERT s new textbooks of +2 stage in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics in face-to-face mode. The faculty of the department also worked as resource persons in organising training of teacher-educators organised by NCERT on new textbooks of NCERT in Science and Mathematics at upper primary, secondary and senior secondary levels through teleconferencing. The department also conducted the training of science teachers of secondary schools and biology teachers of senior secondary schools of the North-Eastern Region on NCERT s new textbooks. The training programmes were held at Imphal and Shillong. Training of SC/ST teachers in Physics of higher secondary schools was organised at Tilaiya, Kodarma (Jharkhand). A training programme for capacity building of the functionaries in Environmental Education (EE), Disaster Management and Mitigation (DMM) was organised at NIE, New Delhi. The organisation of State Level Science Exhibitions (SLSE) and Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) are the two important extension programmes of the department in which almost all the States and Union Territories participate. State Level Science Exhibitions The department provided the necessary guidelines for the preparation of exhibits and models and guidelines for organising the State Level Science 52 ANNUAL REPORT

3 Exhibitions to all States, UTs and other organisations. The main theme for was Science and Technology for Sustainable Development. The organisation of science exhibitions provides opportunities to all participating students, teachers, and visitors to get acquainted with different kinds of equipment, devices, and techniques in Science and Technology. The guidelines enable the students and teachers to generate ideas for developing their exhibits. The identified sub-themes for the preparation of exhibits were: (i) Food and Agriculture; (ii) Industry and Environment; (iii) Energy; (iv) Educational Technology and Mathematical Modelling; and (v) Transport and Communication. The NCERT also provided a catalytic grant of nearly forty lakhs to all sates and UTs for organising the State Level Science Exhibitions. Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) 2006 As a culmination of the activity of the State Level Science Exhibitions (SLSEs) held in , the department organised 33rd Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC)-2006 at Chhatrapati Shivajee Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune in collaboration with the state of Maharashtra, from November In the exhibition, 157 exhibits were invited from the schools of different States/ UTs/Organisations of the country. Out of these, 104 were from the urban areas and 53 from the rural areas. Altogether there were 233 male and 80 female participants. The exhibits were on display on different stalls arranged theme-wise. Hon ble Education Minister of the State, Maharashtra, Shri Vasant Purke inaugurated the exhibition on 23 November During the inaugural function of the exhibition, Prof Krishna Kumar, the Director, NCERT, also addressed the participants. 4 A Model at the 33rd JNNSEC A Model at the 33rd JNNSEC Eminent computer scientist Dr Vijay Bhatkar and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pune, Prof Narendra Jadhav graced the occasion and addressed the participants. Inter-alia this provided an opportunity to the participants to listen and interact with eminent scientists and scholars of the state of Maharashtra. Celebration of National Science Day The department celebrated National Science Day Programme on 28 February It is observed every year to mark the novel discovery 54 ANNUAL REPORT

Raman on this day in After two years of this discovery, Sir C.V. Raman brought the first Nobel Award for the country. On this occasion, a popular lecture on Making Each Drop Count was delivered by Dr A.K. Singh, Project Director, Water Technology Centre, IARI, New Delhi. Dr Singh informed about various methods of water conservation and management. Several teachers participated in this programme. Publication of journal School Science was continued as an on-going activity. Under the project, Centre for Popularisation of Science different measures have been taken for popularisation of science amongst children. One of the very important measures is the establishment of science park and energy park in the NIE campus. Several exhibits have been installed in the science park. A number of teachers, teacher-educator and students from different schools, colleges visit the science park for out-of-school learning of science. They seek guidance also for establishing science parks in their organisations. Some of the schools have already established science parks. A manual on science park which includes write ups on the exhibits of science park is being prepared. Major Contributions of the Faculty Professor Hukum Singh, Head worked as chief coordinator of Textbook Development Committee for Mathematics textbooks for Classes VII, X and XII. Sixteen textbooks in English and Hindi versions were published under his overall supervision. He provided guidance for establishment of Mathematics Laboratory in different schools of various states in the country. He participated as a resource person in various Face-to-Face orientation programmes for master trainers of CBSE-affiliated schools at upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. 6 involved in orientation of teacher-educator of SCERT/SlEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on Teaching of Mathematics, through videoconferencing. He also acted as a resource person in other training programmes of the department. As a co-supervisor, students are working under him for their Ph.D. Professor J.S. Gill coordinated the programme Capacity Building of Functionaries in Environmental Education, Disaster Management and Mitigation. He also coordinated the project Environmental Education Network. He was a member-coordinator for development of source book for schools on Disaster Management and Mitigation. He was involved as a member in the Textbook Development Committee in Science for Class VII. He participated as a resource person in various Face-to-Face orientation programmes for master-trainers of CBSE-affiliated schools at upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. He was also involved in orientation of teacher-educators of SCERTs/SIEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on Teaching of Science, through videoconferencing. He is a member of Content Advisory Committee for Biology for Educational Portal Programme on SAKSHAT of MHRD, New Delhi. As nodal officer incharge of Minority Cell of the NCERT, he coordinated the activities on minorities education. He worked as a member of Environmental Education Syllabus committee of the council. Professor Brahm Parkash worked as a member-coordinator of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Chemistry textbook for Class XII. He was also involved as a member of Textbook Development Committee in the development of Science textbook for Class X. He contributed as resource person in the orientation of teacher-educators of SCERTs/SIEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on Teaching of Science, through videoconferencing. He was involved in the development of Model/Sample Question Paper in Chemistry for Class XII. Professor B.K. Sharma coordinated the development of Hindi version of Science textbook for Class X. He also worked as a member of Textbook Development Committee for the development of the Science textbook for Class X and Physics textbook for Class XII. He worked as a core group member of the programme on Training of SC and ST Teachers in Physics at higher secondary stage. He coordinated the organisation of Face-to- Face orientation programmes for master-trainers in Science of CBSEaffiliated Schools on Science textbooks for Class VI and Physics textbook for Class XI. He contributed in the orientation of Physics teachers on new textbook for Class XI through Teleconferencing Mode. He was also involved in orientation of teacher-educators of SCERTs/SIEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on Teaching of Science, through videoconferencing. He is a member of Content Advisory Committee for Physics for Educational Portal Programme on SAKSHAT of MHRD, New Delhi. He also participated, as a resource person, in various Face-to-Face orientation programmes for master trainers of CBSE-affiliated schools at upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages on new textbooks for Classes VII, X and XII. He also worked as a resource person in several orientation programmes for Science and Physics Teachers, organised by other organisations. 7 Mathematics Education at the Elementary Level, organised by MHRD, New Delhi from February He also participated in All India Consultation Meeting on Vocational Education and Training: Setting Directions and Strategies for Eleventh Five Year Plan, organised by PSSCIVE, Bhopal, at NCERT, New Delhi on 22 March He also contributed to teaching-learning materials titled Comprehensive Guidelines for Academic Excellence in Science for TGTs and also Questions Bank on Assessment of Practical Skills in Science for Class XI, SCERT, New Delhi (2006). Professor P.K. Durani acted as principal coordinator for the orientation of PGT s (Biology) of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, organised by the RIE, Bhubaneswar, from 1-27 June The teachers were oriented in emerging trends and new concepts in Biology based on the guidelines of NCF-2005 and the new textbooks developed by NCERT. He acted as one of nominees of MHRD, Govt. of India for the Committee for the selection of teachers from Orissa for National Award. He contributed to the development of instructional materials, manuals, research tools in Science and Environmental Education at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels for key resource persons, at state and regional level. He was one of the resource persons in teleconferencing at BBSL Centre. Professor Jaishree Sharma coordinated the programme on Supervision of Implementation of Environment Education (EE) in all the Schools of all the States and UTs. She coordinated the work of development of projectbased EE syllabus for higher secondary stage. She also convened meetings for Environmental Orientation to School Education, a component of Quality Improvement in Schools, a scheme of MHRD. She contributed in the orientation of teachers for imparting EE in the infused Model, which, inter-alia inculcates in the children the habits, which would result into positive interactions for conservation of environment. Professor S.K.S. Gautam was involved as a member in the Development of Mathematics textbooks for Classes VII, X and XII. He also coordinated the Hindi version of Classes X and XII textbooks of Mathematics. He was associated with the orientation of mathematics teachers on textbooks for Classes VI, IX and X through teleconferencing mode. He also coordinated Face-to-Face orientation programme for master trainers in Mathematics of CBSE-affiliated schools on Mathematics Textbooks for Classes VI and VII. He also worked as a Member of the team for the development of Teacher s Handbook in Mathematics at higher secondary stage and Source Book on Assessment at Primary Stage. He is a member of Content Advisory Committee for Mathematics for Educational Portal Programme on SAKSHAT of MHRD, New Delhi. He was also involved in the development of Model/ Sample Question Paper in Mathematics for Classes X and XII. He was also involved in orientation of teacher-educator of SCERTs/SIEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on teaching of Mathematics, through videoconferencing. Professor R.S. Sindhu was involved as a member of Textbook Development Committee in the development of Chemistry textbook for Class XII and Science textbook for Class VII. He was also involved in the development of teacher s Handbook in Chemistry for higher secondary ANNUAL REPORT

8 stage at RIE, Mysore. He participated, as a resource person, in the orientation programme of Key Resource Persons of North-Eastern region in Science at secondary stage. He also coordinated a programme on Popularisation of Science through Science Park. He also supervised a Ph.D. thesis in Chemistry. Dr B.K. Tripathi, Reader worked as a member-coordinator of Textbook Development Committee in the development of both English and Hindi versions of Biology textbook for Class XII and also a member for Science textbook for Class X. He was associated with the orientation of Biology teachers for Class XI and science teachers for Class IX through videoconferencing mode. He also participated as a resource person in the Face-to-Face, orientation of master trainers in Science for CBSE-affiliated Schools on Science textbook for Class IX. He coordinated the Face-to- Face orientation programme of master trainers in Biology for CBSEaffiliated schools on Biology textbooks for Class XII. He acted as a resource person in several orientation programmes for Biology teachers, organised by other organisations and RIE, Bhopal. He also attended third meeting of Expert Committee on Capacity Building and Awareness Generation on Bio-resource Development and Utilisation, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi. He was also involved in the development of Model/Sample Question Paper in Biology for Class XII. Dr V.P. Srivastava, Reader worked as member-coordinator of Textbook Development Committee for the development of textbook of Physics for Class XII. He was also a member of the team for the development of Hindi version of this textbook. He coordinated the Face-to-Face orientation programme of Master Trainers in Physics for Higher Secondary Stage on the Physics textbook for Class XII. He was also involved in the development of Model/ Sample Question Paper in Physics for Class XII. He is a member of the Editorial Group, School Science journal. He attended NCERT UNESCO sponsored National Workshop on Strategies for Universalisation of Secondary Education at New Delhi on 10 March 2007 and an International Symposium From Quanta to Cosmos at New Delhi on 9 January Dr R.P. Maurya, Reader worked as member-coordinator of the Textbook Development Committee for the development of Mathematics textbook for Class X. He was also a member of the team for the development of Hindi version of this textbook. He was a member of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Mathematics textbook for Class XII. He was associated with the orientation of Mathematics Teachers for Class IX through teleconferencing mode. He also participated, as a resource person, in the Face-to-Face orientation of master trainers in Mathematics on Mathematics textbooks for Class VI, IX and XI. He coordinated the Face-to-Face orientation programme of master trainers in Mathematics at secondary stage on the Mathematics textbook for Class X. He was also involved in the development of Model/Sample Question paper in Mathematics for Class X. Dr V.P. Singh, Reader worked as a member-coordinator of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Mathematics textbook for Class XII. He was also associated with the orientation of Mathematics Teachers for Class XI through teleconferencing mode. He coordinated the Face-to-Face orientation programme of master trainers in Mathematics at higher secondary stage on the Mathematics textbook for Class XII. He also acted as a resource person in several orientation programmes for Mathematics teachers, organised by other organisations. He was involved, as a team member, for the development of Teacher s Handbook in Mathematics at higher secondary stage. He was also associated with the development of Model/Sample Question Paper in Mathematics for Class XII. He was also involved in the orientation of teacher-educator of SCERTs/SIEs, DIETs, CTEs and IASEs, on teaching of Mathematics, through videoconferencing. Dr Dinesh Kumar, Reader coordinated the organisation of 33rd Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) held at Pune (Maharashtra). He worked as a member of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Science textbook for Class X and Biology textbook for Class XII. He was involved in imparting training to the teachers of Army Welfare Schools of Kargil region. He coordinated the Face-to-Face orientation Programme for master trainers in Biology for CBSE-affiliated schools, on NCERT s New Biology textbook for Class XI. He also coordinated the organisation of training programme for Biology Teachers of North-Eastern Region at NERlE, Shillong. He also worked as a resource person in several orientation programmes for Science and Biology Teachers, organised by other organisations. He is also a member of the Content Advisory Committee for Biology for the Educational Portal Programme on SAKSHAT, of MHRD, New Delhi. Dr Gagan Gupta, Reader worked as a member of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Science textbook for Class X and Physics textbook for Class XII. He coordinated the development of Hindi version of Physics textbook for Class XII. He participated, as a resource person, in several orientation programmes for master trainers and teachers at secondary and higher secondary stages, organised by NCERT and other organisations. He coordinated the work related to State Level Science Exhibition ( ), and training of SC and ST teachers in physics at higher secondary stage. He was a core group member, for Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) He participated in the editing workshop for finalisation of Teacher s Manual in Physics at the higher secondary stage at RIE, Mysore. He also participated in orientation programme to provide Research Support for conducting research to NCERT Faculty at RIE, Mysore. Dr Alka Mehrotra, Reader was member of Textbook Development Committee for the development of Chemistry textbook of Class XII in English and member-coordinator for Hindi version and also a member of textbook development committee for Science textbook for Class X. She coordinated the Face-to-Face orientation programmes of master trainers of CBSE-affiliated schools, in Chemistry for higher secondary stage on ANNUAL REPORT

10 the Chemistry textbook for Classes XI and XII and also in Science for secondary stage for Class IX. She was also associated with the orientation of teachers on textbook in Chemistry for Class XI through videoconferencing. She acted as a resource person in orientation programme for Chemistry teachers, organised by other organisations. She is a member of Content Advisory Committee for Chemistry and resource person for Educational Portal Programme on SAKSHAT of MHRD, New Delhi. Dr A.K. Wazalwar, Reader was a member-coordinator of Textbook Development Committee for textbook of Mathematics for Class VII for English and Hindi versions, and also a member for Mathematics textbook for Class X. He was also associated with the orientation of Mathematics teachers on new textbooks for Classes VII, X and XII. Shri R. Joshi, Lecturer (Selection Grade) coordinated the development of Hindi version of Science textbook for Class VII. He was also a member of Textbook Development Committees for the development of the Science textbook for Class VII and Physics textbook for Class XII. He worked as the executive editor of the quarterly journal School Science. He was also associated with the orientation of Science Teachers on new Science textbook for Class VI, through videoconferencing. He was also a member of the DESM team for the organisation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC)-2006 at Pune. He was also involved in orientation programmes on Environment, Disaster Management and its Mitigation for States/UTs of Northern Region. Dr Kuldeep Singh, Lecturer (Senior Scale) contributed in the development of Teacher s handbook on Environmental Education at Secondary Stage at SISE, Allahabad and in Training Programme for Teachers of Agriculture-based Vocational Courses in North-Eastern States at RRTC, Umran, Meghalaya. He participated in All India Consultation Meeting on Vocational Education and Training: Setting Directions and Strategies for Eleventh Five Year Plan, organised by PSSCIVE, Bhopal at NCERT, New Delhi, on 22 March Three of his articles have been accepted for publication. Dr Shashi Prabha, Lecturer was involved in the review workshops for the development of Science textbooks for Class VII (English version) and for Class X (English and Hindi versions) and Physics textbook for Class XII (Hindi Version). She presented a paper entitled A Study of Change in Conceptual Structure in Learning Reflection and Refraction through Concept Mapping at Indian Science Congress Association-2007, Chidambaram. She was a team member in State Level Science Exhibition for Children. She worked as a resource person in several teacher training/ orientation programmes. Dr Anjni Koul, Lecturer worked as a Member-Coordinator of Textbook Development Committee of Science textbook for Class X and as a member for Chemistry textbook for Class XII. She coordinated the orientation programme of master trainers in Science of CBSE-affiliated Schools at secondary stage for Class X. She also acted as a resource person in several orientation programmes for Science, organised by other organisations. 60 ANNUAL REPORT

11 She worked as a member of the Editorial Board of the quarterly journal School Science. She was also involved in the development of Model/Sample Question Paper in Science for Class X. Dr C.V. Shimray, Lecturer was a member of Textbook Development Committee of Science textbook for Class VII and Biology textbook for Class XII. She coordinated the Orientation Programme for Key resource persons from North-Eastern Region, in Science at the secondary stage. She also acted, as a resource person, in Training of Biology teachers from North-Eastern Region at the higher secondary stage and also in orientation programme for master trainers of CBSE-affiliated Schools. She also contributed a topic on Diversity of Thrips Fauna in the Hill and Valley Regions of Manipur in the book Biodiversity and Insect Pest Management, Narosa Publication, New Delhi (2006). Ms S.L. Varte, Lecturer was involved in the workshops to review manuscripts for Science textbook for Class X and Biology textbook for Class XII. She also participated, as a resource person, in the orientation programme on NCF-2005, content and pedagogy for Biology Teachers at higher secondary stage. ANNUAL REPORT
