1 Notre Dame Foundation Annual Report
2 Dear Family, Friends and Notre Dame Alumni: This past spring I joined Notre Dame as the Notre Dame Foundation Development Director. Prior to my official capacity, my family has been a part of the greater Notre Dame family for the past three years. During that time I have witnessed first-hand how great our school is and now I am proud to use my talents to spread the word about what makes Notre Dame special. Our students consistently score above state and national averages academically. They also develop strong moral character in class as well as through community service activities. This combination of academic excellence and exceptional character speaks volumes for our students and adds greatly to our community vitality. Thanks to the generosity of so many family, friends and alumni, a Notre Dame education is still within reach of many families. However, while still vastly less expensive than Catholic schools in other cities, the most cited reason why families leave Notre Dame is the cost of tuition. That is why the Notre Dame Foundation was established to make Catholic education available and accessible to everyone. Last year the Notre Dame Foundation Board chose to adopt a more aggressive approach to developing Foundation assets. In addition to investing where there is potential for higher rates of return, the Foundation Board hired me as full-time Development Director. I am happy to report that the Foundation grew in assets by over $97,000 this year. This growth enabled the Foundation to provide $89,000 of much-needed support directly to Notre Dame Schools. This school year will be full of both opportunities and challenges, and so I ask you to join us as we continue to make Notre Dame a special place for current and future students. Included in this report is a list of ways you can help support Notre Dame schools through the Notre Dame Foundation. I encourage you to take a look and see if one is right for you. Thank you and God Bless. 4 Making a difference... one student at a time With over $2 million in managed assets, the Notre Dame Foundation supports a variety of functions within Notre Dame. Gifts from generous friends and donors support Notre Dame through the Foundation via teacher salary support, learning and technology needs, and scholarships for students. The largest impact the ND Foundation has had on Notre Dame is in the realm of salary assistance for our teachers and administrators. Since 1997, the Foundation has applied over $540,000 to supplementing salaries of our teachers and administrators. Scholarships have also made Catholic education within reach for a number of Notre Dame students. Scholarships offered through the Foundation help an average of 14 students annually. The St. Jude Tuition Assistance Fund also helps families with tuition assistance in times of need. The Foundation s scholarship monies have funded over 150 scholarships to deserving Notre Dame students and families over the past 11 years totaling more than $47,100. Awards have ranged from $100 to $750. Scholarships 101 While not the only option, giving to existing or creating new scholarships help make a Catholic education affordable for those who may not otherwise be able to choose Notre Dame. There are two basic types of scholarships: endowed and restricted. With an endowed scholarship, gifts to the Foundation are invested and scholarships are then funded by the interest on the endowment. The principal is left intact. Endowed scholarships are self-perpetuating. The number and amount of endowed scholarship awards varies annually depending on earnings. Restricted scholarships are generally smaller sums than endowments. They can be onetime gifts or may allow additional contributions; however, they are not self-perpetuating. Persons interested in contributing to existing funds, establishing new scholarships, creating a memorial fund, or donating to programs or capital projects are encouraged to contact the Notre Dame Foundation Development Director, x385. 7 Giving to the Notre Dame Foundation couldn t be easier Gifts may be made in a number of ways. Depending on the specifics of your situation, giving might make financial sense too. Here are some helpful tips to consider when making charitable giving to the Notre Dame Foundation. Annual Gifts It s easy to make one-time or annual gifts to the Notre Dame Foundation. You can simply fill out and return the enclosed envelope with your gift. Or, you can also visit our new website, and give online. It s easy, it s safe, and just takes a few clicks. Planned Giving Including Notre Dame in your planned giving is also an excellent way to help keep Catholic education alive and well in our community. Gifts of cash are the most popular types of charitable gifts and are fully deductible. However, gifts can take the form of a variety of other assets, including stocks and securities, real estate, insurance, life income, and personal property. Each type of gift has different requirements and benefits for the donor. For more information, contact the Notre Dame Foundation Development Director at x385.
