Chairman s Message Sang Nam Lee, M.D. Chairman KASF - National Board of Directors It has been an honor to serve KASF as chairman of the National Board of Directors for the past two years. I sincerely thank you for your support and deeply appreciate your active participation in the common cause of our organization. I am pleased to report that the state of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation is healthy and growing. In 2013, we awarded scholarships to 270 students from seven regional chapters for a total amount of $439,050 a record high to date in the amount of scholarships. We added five new chair scholarships in 2013 for a total of 11 in the last two years. Despite unfavorable market conditions, our endowment remains at $3.6 million. The Legacy scholarship campaign was launched in early 2013 with an endowment fund goal of $10 million by I feel that there is a great opportunity to achieve this ambitious amount through the many potential donors in the Korean community. Although we have obtained some personal commitments, we should continue our collective efforts in all regional chapters until this goal is achieved. The recently established Southwestern Regional Chapter is stable and is expected to grow stronger with new leadership this year. Many issues and tasks still lie ahead of us. For example, we need timely website updates, strategic plans, placement of policies and procedures, a paid executive director at the national office, and a strategy for growing together despite regional differences. I am confident that with our tradition of mutual cooperation and support, we should be able to resolve these challenges by working together. Again, it has been a privilege to serve as chairman alongside our dedicated volunteers. I would like to welcome our next chairman, Augie Lee, and wish him the best. 1

KASF Mission The Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF) is a non-profit, volunteer-managed organization established to help meet the financial needs of Korean-American students seeking higher education. Specifically, the foundation seeks to: 1. Assist Korean American students in pursuit of their academic and personal achievement, 2. Encourage their community and civic service as an integral part of their leadership development, and 3. Nurture a sense of pride and confidence in Korean cultural heritage and tradition. 6 New Chair Scholarships for 2013 Eastern Regional Chapter Sun-Young Hwang Chair Scholarship Donated by Mrs. and Dr. Young Dahl Song Young-Dahl Song, a 76-year-old former East Carolina University political science professor, and his wife Jeol-Ja Kim, 71, a retired medical doctor, made a generous $73,000 donation to the Korean American Scholarship Foundation s Eastern Region in The scholarship trust was named after Mrs. Song s mother and will be called the Sun-Young Hwang Memorial Scholarship. This was not the first time Dr. Song and Mrs. Song have donated; in 1998 Dr. Song donated to establish the Song, Chee Myong Scholarship, named after his father. The couple s gifts are the biggest individual endowment for the eastern region of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation. Dr. Song endowed this scholarship to cherish the memory of his wife s mother, who raised seven children and also put them through college after his wife s father was kidnapped by North Koreans during the Korean War. The couple hopes that students can be educated and achieve their dreams through this scholarship. Dr. Song came to study in the United States in 1960, thanks to a Rotary Club of Georgia scholarship. We just gave back what we ve received, he said. We got to where we are because of education, so we want to use our donation to help raise the next generation. Dr. Song graduated from Yonsei University and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a professor at East Carolina University from 1967 to His wife graduated from Ewha Womans University, immigrated to the United States in 1966 and worked as an anesthesiologist for 33 years. Sun Kyung & Young Whan Park Chair Scholarship Donated by Mrs. and Mr. Young Whan Park One of the founding members of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF), Mr. Young Whan Park, and his wife, Mrs. Sun Kyung Oh, donated $25,000 to the KASF Eastern Region to establish a Chair Scholarship. Mr. Young Whan Park served as KASF s Eastern Region President from and as chairman of the national board of directors in As he arranged for the scholarship, Mr. Park mentioned his own experience of receiving scholarships as a college student in Ohio and how desperately he needed the scholarships to complete his studies. While he was initially planning to create a Chair Scholarship as part of his will, he changed his mind in favor of making the donation earlier with his wife to assist the next generation of Korean-Americans. The lump sum donation of $25,000 will be used to award the Sun Kyung & Young Whan Park Chair Scholarship to a student studying architecture, theology or social work. Mrs. Park, who retired after working at the World Bank for 30 years said, To establish a righteous society, my husband and I agreed that education is the most important thing. Mrs. Park is the daughter of Chun Suk Oh, a former Korean Minister of Education. She graduated from Ewha University where she was elected as May Queen and taught at Ewha Middle School before coming to the States. Mr. and Mrs. Park have been on the board of directors of KASF since it was founded in Mr. Park counts among his many contributions to KASF a series of articles chronicling the history of the organization in The Korea Times in

Soon Ock & Chin Moon Kim Chair Scholarship Donated by Dr. Chin Moon Kim and Mrs. Soon Ock Paik Dr. Kim, Chin Moon and Mrs. Paik, Soon Ock of Falls Church, VA donated $50,000 to the Korean American Scholarship Foundation Eastern Chapter in November Dr. Kim, who is 86-years-old, said that all the great work that KASF is doing convinced he and his wife that they could trust their donation to this organization, and that it would be used for a good cause. Even though they have two sons, they wanted to donate the money to the community rather than giving it to their sons. Dr. Kim and Mrs. Paik expressed their strong desire to donate to KASF every year and even increase the amount, if possible. Mrs. Paik said that they realized that they are in their 80s and this is the time they need to organize their finances, even though their investments are not significant. They were impressed that the KASF organization is run by all volunteers and there is no overhead for any donated money, and they decided that KASF is the perfect organization for their donation. Dr. Kim graduated from medical school at Seoul National University and came to the US in He did his residency in Louisville, Kentucky and opened his practice as a pediatrician in Fairfax, VA in 1968, and practiced until he retired 20 years ago. Mrs. Paik graduated from Seoul National University s college of education and worked as a high school teacher in Jinhae, Korea before coming to the US with her husband. They have two sons and both of them are physicians. Dr. Kim and Mrs. Paik s donation will allow KASF to establish two new chair scholarships. Kim, Chin Moon and Paik, Soon Ock Scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded each year to Korean-American scholars. Mr. Sang Kim, KASF ERC president, thanked Dr. Kim and Mrs. Paik for their generous donation and promised that KASF will redouble its efforts to its mission of giving scholarship money to students in financial need. Mideastern Regional Chapter Chull Victor Kim Memorial Chair Scholarship Donated by Dr. Youngho Kim Established by Past President of MERC, Dr. Youngho Kim to honor his youngest son, Chull Victor Kim, who passed away suddenly due to his illness at age 34. Victor was actively involved with youth activities as a volunteer for many years such as in KASF, Korean Community Center, and Korean language camp. 5

Regional Activities Eastern Regional Chapter ERC Golf Tournament Success On the first of June 2013, KASF ERC hosted its annual fundraising golf tournament. This year s tournament was sponsored by Morgan Stanley. The tournament had a great turnout of 119 participants and 32 sponsors. The generosity of participants helped KASF achieve its goal of raising $10,000. ERC 2013 Banquet KASF ERC s 44th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet was held at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner Hotel on September 22, 2013 represented the exciting culmination of a year s worth of hard work. The two main speakers of the night, Dr. James Kim from Harvard University and Danna Kim from Virginia Tech, shared their stories in their inspirational speeches. Dr. James Kim gave the scholarship recipients his secrets to success as he experienced it in his academic endeavors. Danna Kim opened up to the audience by showing her appreciation for her parents and the hardships they had to endure in the past. The students received much more than a monetary donation they received an investment of support from countless Korean Americans who are all behind them in their pursuit for success. Although the students may have expected to walk out of the banquet with only a scholarship in their hands, they in fact left with the continuing support of everyone from the scholarship foundation. 8

Northeastern Regional Chapter NRC Scholarship Award Banquet The Northeastern Regional Chapter held their annual scholarship award banquet on September 7, 2013 with 380 students, parents, donors and guests attending the ceremony and enjoying the festivities. In 2012 we provided $104,900 to 55 students, but in 2013 we awarded $117,400, an increase of 12%, to 58 students. The keynote speaker of the award ceremony was Dr. Philip Kim, a professor in the physics department of Columbia University, who almost won the Nobel Prize in In his inspirational address, he shared his experiences with the cultural differences and similarities in the US and Korea, and emphasized the effectiveness of Korean cultural heritage and how it works in the US and around the world. We have chosen The Andrew Kim Foundation as the donor of the year. The Andrew Kim Foundation was founded in the memory of Andrew Kim who perished in the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 and has been making substantial donations every year to KASF and many other causes. New York and New Jersey Open House We opened our doors wide to reach a broader public in our region and let them know about KASF and its mission. NERC had two Open Houses last year: May 16 in NJ and May 30 in NY. We invited guests and potential donors to the Open House and explained what we have done so far and how they could support and join us. Our particular focus was on introducing and promoting the concept of the Legacy Scholarship. In the NY Open House, Dr. Sang Nam Lee, the National Board Chairman, came all the way from Washington, DC to personally present the idea and background of the Legacy Scholarship to guests and newspaper reporters in attendance. Golf Outing The Northeastern region held a very successful fundraising golf outing event on May 15, The number of guests exceeded 100 and raised $27,000. This event was very effective not only for raising scholarship funds but also for promoting and publicizing the cause and activities of KASF in general. 9

Southern Regional Chapter SRC 2013 Fundraiser Concert In April 2012, KASF SRC had its annual fundraiser concert at Korean Community Presbyterian Church in Duluth, Georgia with over 200 guests in attendance. Our guests, donors, and members were entertained by the Peachtree Quartet, an elegant ensemble formed by members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Yang Yoon Kim, Peachtree Quartet s viola player, helped conclude our concert program with beautiful Korean music which touched the hearts of many of our guests. In June 2013, KASF SRC held its first date and silent auction, which was executed with the goal of promoting our organization to young professionals who may become our members and/or donors. With the help of generous business owners who donated their goods and the help of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes, we were able to auction over 60 items and 23 dates with eligible bachelors and bachelorettes. All the dates were sponsored by a restaurant which gave a $50 gift card to every date winner. It was a very successful event received lots of media attention and was attended by 150 guests. In August 2013, we awarded 43 students with scholarships, for a total amount of $48,500. Over 150 guests and members attended the banquet at the Marriott at Century Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Entertainment was provided by Ms. Jin Kim, a vocalist and a previous KASF scholarship recipient. Our keynote speaker was Mr. BJ Pak who is a state representative in the State of Georgia. Mr. Pak shared his life story and the challenges and the obstacles he had to overcome, as well as the importance of giving back to the community. In September 2013, KASF SRC held our annual golf tournament at Heritage Golf Course. Many board members gathered early to prepare lunch and snacks for the 80+ golfers who attended this fundraiser. The post-tournament dinner was sponsored by Merrill Lynch, and we are proud to say that this was the first time that our chapter s dinner was sponsored by a corporation. Our 2013 golf tournament was made even more special with the attendance of several Korean War Veterans, who were recognized for their selfless acts. We also celebrated the beginning of our new scholarship program Scholarships for Descendants of American Korean War Veterans which is being sponsored by the Chu Family Foundation starting in

Western Regional Chapter Introduction of the Junior Board KASF WRC created a Junior Board committee consisting of past and current scholarship recipients who are now outstanding young professionals. The board hopes to create a swift transition for future young professionals into leaders of the Korean community. Focusing on commitment, community service, and leadership abilities, we requested students and graduates who are willing to learn and share their input about increasing fundraising opportunities and expanding KASF-Western s exposure to successful students in need of financial aid. We will be selecting around six applicants to join our Junior Board in the beginning of Connecting through Facebook With our goal to connect quickly and swiftly with our targeted customers through social media, we decided to regularly post on our newly created Facebook page for our Western Region. Every Thursday we upload a short post on subjects like scholarship deadlines, Junior Board membership, networking opportunities, and events. We have opened up our Facebook wall for our Facebook followers to post on subjects like networking and mentorship opportunities. We have made our Facebook space as a way for connecting alumni and mentors to our prospective scholarship recipients. Seminar held at KASF Office On August 24, 2013, KCSC held an annual orientation seminar for the new and upcoming group of interns. KCSC, otherwise known as the Korean Coalition of Students in California, is a high school based leadership internship group that strives to give back to the community by hosting safe and fun events for other high school students. Remarkable Success for the 23rd Annual Golf Tournament The 23rd Annual Golf Tournament was held on July 17, 2013 at the Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine. Many people enjoyed a round of golf with close friends and acquaintances after which they participated in a silent auction and dinner program. With over 114 players and 15 volunteers, we were able to raise over $70,000 the largest fundraising effort achieved, thanks to many corporate and individual sponsors as well as in-kind donations. A Heartwarming Annual Awards Luncheon Our 28th Awards Luncheon was held on September 28, More than 120 people including donors, recipients, and guests gathered to celebrate this year s accomplishments and to recognize and award 50 scholarship recipients. Before the actual luncheon program, we held a mentorship program introducing our Junior Board. The program started out with a short video highlighting KASF s past and current accomplishments as well as the future vision of the organization. 11

Testimonials To the Korean American Scholarship Foundation I cannot express enough gratitude towards this organization that works so diligently to enable individuals like myself to pursue higher education. That this foundation acts as a non-profit organization exemplifies its selflessness and sincere interests in opening the doors for those who are financially in need. I am extremely blessed to have been a recipient of such generosity. There are countless individuals who, in the months preceding college, stare fearfully at the costs that are attached to higher education. Whether it be private or public, education and its fiscal demands has become quite a scare for many. And quite frankly, many people seem to simply back down from the challenge, as they see no support to lean on in the midst of such scholarship. The effect that scholarship foundations such as this one has is powerful and liberating. Knowing that there are financial pillars to lean on in one s endeavor to pursue higher education eases the anxiety and the hardship. Simply stated, higher education is a distant dream that will never be fulfilled for many without organizations such as the Korean American Scholarship Foundation. Knowing that a foundation has backed my collegiate endeavors drives me to more diligently pursue my studies, aspire for greatness, and dream to new heights. Knowing that there are people who are willing to lift me over the hurdles that come with any endeavors is absolutely empowering. In this case, the ultimate product is a body of effected Korean youth that dares to venture further and further towards greatness. Again, I would like to simply thank you for the new adventures that you enabled for me. I cannot even begin to imagine what my situation would be like devoid of your generosity. Thank you for your organization and so freely extending it to those who are in need of assistance. Sincerely, Benjamin Lee 2013 Scholarship Recipient Dear Scholarship Donor, My name is Hyosang (Mark) Kim and I am a current first year law student at Stanford Law School. I am honored to receive the Korean American Scholarship Foundation Western Regional Scholarship. Your generosity enabled me to embark on legal education at this great institution. I was born in South Korea and was adopted by my American parents in Virginia in 2004 when I was twelve years old. My adoptive parents warmly and wholeheartedly raised and educated me. I attended the University of Virginia and majored in biology. Although I majored in science, I was interested in law issues, especially biotechnology patent law. I started off my experience with an internship at DukWon Patent Law Firm in Seoul, South Korea and furthered my experience with an externship at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Along with these experiences, I also interned at the Student Legal Services at my undergraduate institution and also at U.Va. Licensing & Ventures Group (the technology transfer branch). My undergraduate study, various patent related experiences, and a new journey on legal study were possible thanks to many generous scholarship donors like you. I cannot express my gratitude enough to thank you in allowing me to continue my journey. One of the many reasons why I chose Stanford Law School is its great intellectual property law curriculum and faculty. I am blessed and thankful for being here and I know that it is only possible thanks to your generosity. During the summer before my first year of law school, I took and passed the patent bar. And I am planning to take intellectual property law courses as they become available. I am excited about all the resources and opportunities provided to me. Your scholarship helped me not to miss these precious moments. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. Sincerely, Hyosang (Mark) Kim 12

Dear KB Kim & M Chung, friends of Korean American Scholarship Foundation My name is Jihoon David Kim. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your generous donation. I am one of the recipients of your support and am very grateful for your heartwarming assistance. On December 13, 2004, I had a snowboarding accident and broke my neck at the cervical 5 level resulting in quadriplegia. I did not understand the details of the injury that I was hoping to walk out of the rehabilitation hospital within three months, but that never happened and shattered the hope of my family and friends. Even after the spinal cord injury, I have gone through various physical and emotional challenges; however, the love of God, family, friends, and people like you were the strength to get up in the morning and make the best out of what I already had in my life. I want you to know how far I have come since the accident. In 2011, I graduated from UC Denver with a BA Psychology and a minor in Sociology. I earned an MA in Pastoral and Spiritual Care at Iliff School of Theology Denver in June Currently, I am enrolled in an MDIV at Denver Seminary. From March 2012 to January 2013, I was a volunteering chaplain at Littleton Adventist Hospital and Porter s Adventist Hospital. It was heartbreaking to see patients struggling, but being a chaplain and praying with patients and their loved ones was rewarding and humbling experience. I am a part time student pastor at Antioch Baptist Church in Aurora, Colorado. After the MDIV at Denver Seminary, I am praying for God to lead me to study a Ph. D. program. Experiencing the power of God s touch in the midst of suffering, I feel that God is leading me to pursue the ministry of pastoral care and sense that the MDIV at Denver Seminary and Ph. D. would be great asset and resource to help other in various needs to listen and emphasize with them. Your support helps me to study, be prepared, motivates me to pursue my goals, and strengthens me to live a positive life. Your desire to help people in needs makes differences, encourages and inspires me to be like you. My prayer goes out for your relationship with God, family, friends, others, and God s blessing. Sincerely, Jihoon David Kim 13
