1 Newsletter of IEEE Kolkata Section June - January, 2015 From the Chair Dear Members, I am happy to address you again after the AGM 2014 held on January 15 at Calcutta Club. This issue covers the activity report for July January 15, I feel proud and honoured to share the news of our members' accomplishments this year: Prof. Amit Konar has been elected Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti has been elected Chair-Elect 2015 of IEEE India Council, Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar has been invited to serve as a Vice-Chair of the EDS Region 10 SRC for , and Prof. Subir Kumar Sarkar has been elected Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Electron Device Society of Region 10 (Asia and Pacific). Let's convey our heartiest congratulations to all of them. I may also add a news of Section's accomplishment. The AP/MTT Chapter of our Section has won the 'Best Chapter Award' of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society this year and on behalf of this Chapter, I had the honor to receive the 'Best Chapter Plaque' in the award banquet held on July 9, 2014 at Memphis, Tennessee. I represented Kolkata Section in the IEEE Sections Congress held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the Rai Convention Center, from 22 to 24 August Dr. Gargi Keeni of our section had also attended the same. Sections Congress is a triennial gathering of IEEE grassroots leadership to establish worldwide network and develop recommendations to guide the future of IEEE. I personally had interacted with several leaders from different parts of the globe and tried to adopt new ideas to advance our own activities. During November 7-8, 2014 we had organized th the 4 edition of CALCON, a triennial National Conference of our Section. CALCON 2014, attended by over 220 participants, was a

2 huge success. A number of scientists of international repute attended and offered technical talks and tutorials. A detailed report has been presented in a dedicated column 'CALCON 2014'. We could organize few lecture meetings on technical and industry related topics and a separate account is provided in this issue under the heading of 'Lecture Meetings'. We have tried to give special attention to Student Branches and their activities and have reached several Branches on several occasions. In CALCON 2014, we have introduced provision of interactive sessions between the representatives of IEEE Student Branches and the section leaders to address their issues. Based on their recommendations, the section is going to introduce yearly project competition at Bachelor and Master levels for IEEE Student members and in each category, quite a good number of prizes will be awarded to encourage and financially support the successful students. I had attended a few Conferences technically coth sponsored by us, namely 4 International Conference on Emerging Applications of Information Technology (EAIT 2014) held in Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata during th Dec 19-21, 2014; 13 International Conference on Information Technology (ICIT 2014), held in Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, during December 22-24, 2014;and 1st Conference on Power, Dielectric and Energy Management (ICPDEN 2015)., held in NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh during January 10-11, I do welcome new Executive Committee for 2015 under the leadership of Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar, Chair It is my time to take your leave. I enjoyed my journey with you for last couple of years. Thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful opportunity and also bearing with me all the way. Namaskar!

25 Dr. M. Sengupta, Chairman IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter, handing over the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Arijit Basuray ANNUAL REPORT The fourth technical lecture meeting was th hosted on 13 October 2014 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. This technical lecture meeting was on Nuclear Reactor Engineering by Mr. Subhadeep Sen, Scientific Officer-D, Control Engineer, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. KGS-3&4, Kaiga, Karnataka, India. This talk presented the basics of nuclear fission energy and its industrial application in nuclear power plant followed by a relatively longer discussion on nuclear power plant operation and its engineered safety features and three stage program of India. Later, some more advanced key issues related to operation and maintenance were presented and discussed. The talk was attended by 32 persons including 5 IEEE members. The fifth and last technical lecture meeting of IEEE IAS Kolkata for the year 2014 was arranged on th 14 November 2014 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Arijit Basuray, Managing Director and CEO, Neo-Teletronix Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata, India. The title of the lecture was, Pulsed Power and its application in Electrical Testing. Pulsed Power in electrical engineering, described as a system where stored electrical or magnetic energy is discharged as electrical energy into a load in a single short pulse or series of short pulses with controlled repetition rate, is gaining significance day by day. The talk stressed on the fact that pulsed power is not an alternative to traditional ac or dc power engineering. It is intended to solve other problems and deals with essentially different loads. The lecture demonstrated how pulse power technique has become almost inevitable in every sphere of life, like power engineering, plasma generation, Material and dielectric testing, generation of high repetition rate high power CO2 lasers, Electron injection into nuclear reactors, Electron accelerators, kilo amp linear accelerators, food preservation and many more. The lecture eventually presented a brief account of Pulsed Power Generation Techniques and its applications, particularly in testing of insulation of electrical equipment and components run under repetitive step voltages say stator winding of a variable voltage variable frequency driven motor. Several interesting practical field test reports with their analyses were discussed in the lecture. 36 participants including 5 IEEE members attended the programme.

The workshop was aimed for the 3 year students of the Polytechnic colleges.35 students both men and women of Electrical Engineering stream of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray Polytechnic, Jadavpur attended the workshop. The students were tutored on the MATLAB basics, its usages & applications and also about Simulink. Dr.Bhaswati Goswami, member of IEEE WIE Kolkata Chapter and Faculty of IEE,JU has given an introduction with a power point presentation about MATLAB and Simulink. The participants were provided with hard copy documents beforehand so that they can follow the instructions for using MATLAB and Simulink. The documents can also be used for future consultations. They were asked to check each of the instructions in the computers provided to them in groups of two. In a total 17 computers were set to be used by them. The volunteers of the IEE Department, which included the M. Tech students and Research Scholars, assisted them. The students learned to use and apply the basic instructions, functions and even could do MATLAB programming (creating the.m files) on their own. From the feedback it seems they enjoyed the learning. They also showed interest on such program in futurethey were given a certificate of participation on the same at th the end of the workshop on 26 evening. It was overwhelming to see them perform on their own at the end of the workshop, which gave an overall satisfaction to the volunteers as well as the learners.
