3 Welcome to Seoul Dear colleagues and friends, On behalf of the Korean Stroke Society, we are very excited to hereby invite you to International Conference STROKE UPDATE 2018 & 1 st Australian-Korean Joint Stroke Congress (ICSU 2018 & 1 st AKJSC) which will take place in Seoul, South Korea, from September 13 to 15, ICSU, which focuses on the latest research in the various aspects of stroke, has been held biennially since ICSU has provided participants with the various networking opportunities as many well renowned international speakers have participated at the ICSU. We have also held joint sessions with the Nordic Stroke Society, which will continue in ICSU During ICSU 2016, we had a joint conference with the 8 th International Conference on Intracranial Atherosclerosis, and this year we are proud to launch the 1 st AKJSC in partnership with the ICSU AKJSC is a result of the collaboration and friendship between the members of the Australian Stroke Academy and the Korean Stroke Society. AKJSC will continue to strengthen scientific collaboration and friendship between stroke experts from two countries that are at the forefront of developing and expanding in the field of stroke. For ICSU 2018 & 1 st AKJSC, the Scientific Program committee has prepared exciting sessions of the stroke prevention, prehospital management, acute stroke imaging and IV thrombolysis, endovascular therapy, recent clinical trials as well as plenary lectures. The debate session will provide further opportunities for active discussion on currently hot issues. We have no doubt that participants will have a very pleasant experience in terms of learning contemporary knowledge on stroke and providing a networking opportunity for the community. We look forward to welcoming you to Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, a city that beautifully balances the traditional and modern, and where mountains and river flow harmoniously through the center of the city. Appropriately, you may even enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Han River from the venue, Vista Walkerhill Hotel. Best regards Ji Hoe Heo, M.D., Ph.D. Congress Chair, Korean Stroke Society

4 Welcome Message from Australasian Stroke Academy The Australasian Stroke Academy is delighted to partner with the Korean Stroke Society in our first joint stroke congress in Seoul. The Australasian Stroke Academy was set up 4 years ago with its aims being to foster research and to provide state of the art education to early career stroke physicians. Although Korea has twice the population of Australia, there are many similarities. Stroke research and management are advanced in both countries on the global stage, with integrated stroke networks and considerable expertise in endovascular thrombectomy. Academic stroke medicine is also vibrant in both countries and the friendships and collaborations that will emerge from this meeting are likely to provide more synergies. We see great opportunities for joint clinical trials to answer some of the burning questions in stroke. Some of our interests include endovascular direct thrombectomy, use of tranexamic acid for sub-2 hour intracerebral hemorrhage and the use of tenecteplase at late ischemic time windows with advanced imaging. This will be an exciting congress with a program focussed on the new developments and hot topics in stroke. Finally, we greatly look forward to a great meeting with good friends, enjoying some delicious Korean food and a great congress atmosphere in your dynamic capital city, Seoul. Stephen Davis MD FRCP Edin FRACP FAHMS Patron, Australasian Stroke Academy Immediate Past-President WSO 4
