1 JEFFERSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS This application packet is for Jefferson Community College students who meet at least one of the criteria in this definition of Nontraditional Student: Over 24 years of age and not dependent upon your parents for support. A veteran of the U.S. armed forces. Married. Supporting your own child. Have received a bachelor s degree. This application is for two scholarships available for Nontraditional Students: The JCC Nontraditional Student Scholarship; and the Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship. Please review the criteria for each scholarship, and please note that certain information is required to be included in your essay if you apply for the Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship. Applicants also must apply for Financial Aid by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This should be filed in February Applicants who file the FAFSA later than February may not be considered in the initial review of applications. Scholarships are distributed over two semesters. Scholarships are not continued beyond one year. Eligible students are invited to apply for a scholarship for a second year, but will compete with the applicant pool. 2 Jefferson Community College Foundation Scholarship Application for Nontraditional Students Academic Year Jefferson Community College Nontraditional Scholarship New, returning, transfer and continuing students may be eligible to apply for the Jefferson Community College Nontraditional Scholarship for the academic year. The scholarship is $500 per year, awarded in $250 increments per semester. Students are welcome to apply for the scholarship for a second year, but will compete with that year s applicant pool. Application Criteria In order to meet the minimum qualifications for this award, you must meet at least one of the independency guidelines defined by the federal government, which are: Over 24 years of age and not dependent upon your parents for support. A veteran of the U.S. armed forces. Married. Supporting your own child. Have received a bachelor s degree. In addition, all applicants for the Jefferson Community College Foundation Nontraditional Scholarships must: Apply and be accepted into a degree program at Jefferson Community College. Apply for financial aid by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available in the financial aid office please contact this office regarding filing options. Enroll at least half time (6 credit hours) for the Fall 2014 semester. Demonstrate financial need. The funds may be used for tuition, books and other educational expenses including transportation and child care. Preference is given to first-time associate degree students.

3 Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship The Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship is an award for a nontraditional student who meets one of the following criteria: Is enrolled in a course of study in the humanities, OR Demonstrates financial need and academic merit. The scholarship is $1,000 per year, awarded in $500 increments per semester. Applicants for this award must check the appropriate box on the application form, and must include in their essay an explanation of how they will continue the values exhibited by Martha during her lifetime in their future career. The scholarship will be awarded with the assistance of a member of Martha s family in the selection process. How to Apply To apply for any of the scholarships for nontraditional students, applicants must submit the following: 1. A completed Jefferson Community College Nontraditional Scholarship Application. 2. A personal statement. (Guidelines provided in application.) Application Deadline The review of applications will begin on August 1, A minimum of eight JCC Nontraditional scholarships for up to $500 each will be awarded. One Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 will be awarded. In addition, students applying for scholarships must also file for financial aid using the FAFSA before submitting the application. Student signature (Date) Martha Papworth O Neill Memorial Scholarship: As a student, Martha discovered her love of history and her calling to teach. She traveled extensively and loved learning about other people and their cultures. She taught English in China at all levels, elementary through college. She documented her experiences in China, Chile, Peru, Turkey, and Europe through photographs and journals. That s when she discovered her passion for journalism. At Jefferson Community College she found what she called her dream job as Adjunct Instructor of Reading and Journalism, combining her inquisitiveness and sense of social justice. Martha will always be remembered for her generous and giving soul that touched so many in her beloved Northern New York home and community.
