1 VINCENT WEI-CHENG WANG School of Arts and Sciences Dean s Office University of Richmond Richmond, VA Phone: (804) Fax: (804) vwang@richmond.edu CURRENT POSITION Associate Dean, School of Arts and Sciences, and Professor of Political Science, University of Richmond ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS Associate Dean, School of Arts and Sciences (A&S), University of Richmond, January 2012-present The School of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit within the University of Richmond: 22 departments; 11 programs; 265 FT continuing faculty (225 tenure-stream; 40 faculty of practice); 55 staff. All of UR s 3,000+ undergraduate students begin their course work in A&S. After one full year of study, students may decide to pursue majors in the other undergraduate schools, though 70 percent of students choose to remain in A&S. As Associate Dean, my duties and projects include: Managing the undergraduate research program (budget overseen $538,000), developing policies, creating opportunities for students, promoting undergraduate research on and off campus Managing the faculty research program (budget overseen $529,000), developing policies, creating opportunities for faculty, promoting faculty research on and off campus Serving as the program manager for Arts and Sciences Student Summer Fellowships program at the UR Summer Fellowship Steering Committee Negotiating and making offers to new tenure-track faculty with authorization by the dean Hiring of term (full-time visiting) faculty (budget overseen $947,280)(around each year) Hiring of adjunct (part-time) faculty (budget overseen: $648,670): around 140 units each year Approving directors travel and travel exception funds (budget overseen: $405,000) Serving as liaison to International Education; Career Service; Admissions; Information Service Serving as a member and Vice Chair, Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects Responsible for department chair training, evaluation, and election Participating in annual faculty reviews Administering faculty midcourse reviews Administering academic program reviews (APR): facilitating the search for common intellectual questions (and their improvement) across programs, rather than the old-fashioned assessment. Designed the Program-Based Budgeting (PBB) process for A&S, contributing to shared governance by helping establish Dean s Advisory Council (DAC) and a fairer and more rational resource allocation system. Designed the Teaching Assignment Projection (TAP) project for A&S, providing an easy-to-understand multi-purpose tool that serves as a capacity audit, a class schedule, and a contingent faculty forecast. Completed the Contingent Faculty Reform Initiative (CFRI) for the School, improved the compensation for contingent faculty (25% pay raise for adjunct faculty), reduced reliance on chronic term hires, and offered department chairs more tools all done in a budget-neutral manner. Serving as a member of the University of Richmond Summer Fellowship Task Force Executing various assigned tasks, such as Dean s Advisory Council, faculty annual evaluations, serving as Acting Chair of Department of Latin American and Iberian Studies (twice) and grade changes Staff supervision and development: one administrative coordinator Chair, Department of Political Science, University of Richmond, Managed the daily operations of one of the largest departments in the university with seventeen tenure-stream faculty, several visiting faculty, and over one hundred majors 1
