1 Erasmus Mundus Master Optics in Science and Technology (OpSciTech) ************** Regulations for year 1 The Optics in Science and Technology (OpSciTech) Erasmus Mundus Master is a European Masters programme providing a thorough and multidisciplinary overview of the field of Optics from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major sectors of the economy. Six leading research and education institutions in Europe are collaborating to provide a comprehensive course covering the major aspects of Optics. The Masters programme is a two year course (120 ECTS credits), with students spending one year in each of two different countries. The OpSciTech partners are: Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu, Finland Université Paris-Sud and Institut d Optique Graduate School, France Warsaw University of Technology, Poland This document outlines the rules and regulations for the first year of the OpSciTech Erasmus Mundus Master at Institut d Optique Graduate School. Students at the Paris site may be registered at Institut d Optique Graduate School or Université Paris-Sud, but all coursework takes place at Institut d Optique regardless of the place of registration. There are two study tracks: - Study-track A: reserved for international OpSciTech Master students. - Study-track B: reserved for students of engineering at Institut d Optique Graduate School with parallel admission to the OpSciTech programme. 3 Research project Students are expected to work on a laboratory research project for at least 10 weeks. In order to help students choose and define their project, visits will be made to the laboratories of Institut d Optique Graduate School, Université Paris-Sud and Ecole Polytechnique. Details of the selected project must be submitted for approval to Franck Delmotte, assistant-professor in charge of internships, before 15th May. Students are required to write a project report of between 5 and 10 pages, which should be submitted by 15 th August at the latest to Prof. Arnaud Dubois. Assessment of the research project will be based on the project supervisor s evaluation of the student s work (50% of final mark) and the written report (50%). Summer workshop A one-week summer workshop is organized each year on a rotating basis at one of the five OpSciTech sites. During this workshop, the students will present their research project to an examination panel and their fellow students. Attendance at the workshop is compulsory. Students will need to intermit from their project for one week and should inform their supervisor as early as possible. Academic requirements The Examination Committee will meet at the end of each semester to assess student performance, confirm results and refer students for further examination in case of failure. Students are allowed to resit examinations once in case of failure. Two examination sessions are held each year for any given course. The courses are gathered in modules as indicated in the table below. The marks obtained at each module result in the weighted average of the marks obtained at all the courses of the module, the weight being the number of ECTS. A module is validated when a mark equal to or higher than 10/20 is obtained. However, marks higher than 7/20 for individual courses are required to validate each module. The corresponding number of ECTS credits is automatically awarded when a pass mark is obtained. A semester is validated when all the modules of this semester are validated. In the case of a failed semester, the examinations committee will determine which examinations the student will be required to take at the second session. In the case of re-examination the mark will be capped to a maximum of 12/20. The final mark will be the mark obtained at the second session. Several factors are taken into account when considering students for the second year of study, including: the student s choice, academic performance, motivation and relevance of profile to specialisation at the site and number of places available. Whilst every effort is made to satisfy the student s first or second choice, the number of places is limited at each site and we cannot guarantee that a student will obtain his or her 1 st or 2 nd choice. All students will receive an offer from one institution. Students are required to have fulfilled all first year requirements to be admitted into the second year of study. 5 Course content STUDY-TRACK B (reserved for Engineering students at Institut d Optique with parallel admission) Track B students take the full second year course of the engineering degree of Institut d Optique Graduate School. Whenever a course is given in English and French, they should take the English version of the course. Delmotte Total 31 The Institut d Optique Graduate School 2 nd year internship doubles as the track B research project for the first year of the Erasmus Mundus course. It should be approved by Franck Delmotte, assistant-professor in charge of internships, before 15 th May. Academic requirements The academic requirements for the first year of track B are similar to those that apply to track A. Track B students should note that the award of the Diplôme d Ingénieur of Institut d Optique Graduate School can only be awarded on: 1: 2: Successful completion of both year 1 of the OpSciTech Erasmus Mundus Master course and year 2 of the Institut d Optique Graduate School engineering course at Palaiseau AND Successful completion of year 2 of the OpSciTech Erasmus Mundus Master course at a partner institution under the terms of the regulations of the Institut d Optique Graduate School engineering course. OR Successful completion of year 1 or the OpSciTech Erasmus Mundus Master course at a partner institution in place of the second year at Institut d Optique Graduate School AND Return to Institut d Optique Graduate School for successful completion of year 3 of the engineering course and any other outstanding requirements. In the event of a student successfully completing year 2 of the Institut d Optique Graduate School engineering course (option 1, above) BUT failing year 1 of the OpSciTech Erasmus Mundus course, the student will be required to resign from the Erasmus Mundus course and complete year 3 of the engineering course at Palaiseau. Passage into year 2 of Erasmus Mundus course choice of site and conditions Students will be asked to state preferences for their second year of study in mid-april.
