On the redesigned assessments, students will encounter: Eight Key Changes to the SAT Seven Key Changes to the PSAT/NMSQT Continued emphasis on reasoning alongside a clearer, stronger focus on the knowledge, skills, and understandings most important for college and career readiness and success. Greater emphasis on the meaning of words in a variety of contexts and on how word choice shapes meaning, tone, and impact. Focus on math that matters most, including problem solving, data analysis, algebra, and advanced mathematical concepts. Rights-only scoring (a point for a correct answer but no deduction for an incorrect answer; blank responses have no impact on scores).
Highlights - Students PSAT/NMSQT measures reading, writing and language, and math skills developed over many years, both in and out of school. Students will be asked to recall facts from literature, history, or science or to complete formulas. Test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills. Early indicator of college readiness.
Highlights - Students Reminders! Food and beverages, including bottled water, unless approved by the College Board s Services for Students with Disabilities.
Highlights Test Supervisor The order and length of tests within the assessment have changed, and the Math Test is divided into two parts: Math Test Calculator and Math Test No Calculator. The answer sheet has changed. There are additional fields and questions for students and the Certification Statement no longer requires cursive. The regular print test book to use in nonstandard rooms now has a pink cover. The remittance process has changed. You will receive an confirming the number of answer sheets received for processing before you need to submit your remittance. Online supervisor training will be available for the first time beginning in mid- August This training will be an essential resource to help ensure you and your students experience a positive PSAT/NMSQT administration.
A message for supervisors This manual is for use in supervising the administration of the PSAT/NMSQT at your school. You may also fill the role of coordinator in charge of ordering materials. If that role is filled by a separate person at your school, you will need to work with him or her to ensure receipt and secure storage of materials. Details on how to access the online training will be ed in August and will cover the fundamental aspects of administering the PSAT/NMSQT assessment. Access the training directly by visiting PTAT stands for Professional Test Administration Training
Training overview Overview will include: Planning and staffing to support the test administration Understanding assessment sections and timing Administering the assessment with SSD accommodations Ensuring test material security Packaging and returning your test material Managing and reporting testing issues and irregularities Following the remittance process
Materials Check List Shipping Notice Plastic bags with packs of 5 or 25 of the following: Shrink-wrapped test books Flyers listing religion and college codes Answer sheets Supervisor s Manuals (at least one for every 25 test books) Copies of the Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT and removable full-length Practice Test for distribution to students
Materials Check List Test Shipment Memo Supervisor s Kit containing the following: Supervisor s Report forms Remittance Envelope Nonstandard Administration Envelope for return of answer sheets for students tested with accommodations Bundle of 5 Supervisor s Irregularity Report (SIR) forms Gray Materials Return Envelope Roll of packing tape Prelabeled Courier Answer Sheet Return Boxes
Materials Check List Your school will receive the following separately, if ordered: Nonstandard test books and materials for students testing with accommodations Supervisor s Manual(s) for Nonstandard Testing (including scripts for extended time, extra or extended breaks, and alternate test formats such as Braille and MP3 audio formats) NOTE: If you participate in the bulk registration process, use the Supervisor s Manuals that are shipped with the labels in place of this manual.
Changing your school s test date A school may administer the test only on the date for which it registered, using the test form specified for that date. To change the test date, the school must contact the PSAT/NMSQT office in time to obtain appropriate test materials. If you need to switch from Oct. 14 to Oct. 28, or the reverse, immediately go online to collegeboard.org/school or call the PSAT/NMSQT office (see inside front cover) to change your test date. If your school cannot test on either Oct. 14 or 28, contact the PSAT/NMSQT office immediately to learn about your options. NOTE: The scores of students whose schools administer the test on a date other than one authorized by the PSAT/NMSQT office will not be considered for entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program, and those students may not receive score reports.
Absent Students Advise a student who does not take the PSAT/NMSQT due to illness, an emergency, or other extenuating circumstance to write immediately to the scholarship program the student wishes to enter. Scholarship programs are described in the 2015 PSAT/NMSQT Official Student Guide.
Storing and checking test materials Make sure that you have received all cartons. If more than one carton was used for your shipment, each will show its number and the total number of cartons sent (e.g., 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3). Without opening the plastic bags, check the cover of your test books to verify that they are the correct books for the test date you requested. Check the answer sheets to make sure that they are for the correct test date. Wednesday answer sheets are green; Saturday answer sheets are blue. Within 24 hours of receiving your test shipment, in a secure area with only authorized staff present, count the tests (keeping them in the unopened plastic bags) and answer sheets to make sure you have received the correct quantity
Storing & checking test materials Call, fax, or the PSAT/NMSQT office (see page 2) immediately if there is a discrepancy between the form or number of tests and answer sheets you ordered and those you received. Use the checklist on the cover of this manual to verify that you have all materials. Contact the PSAT/NMSQT office if any materials are missing.
Storing & checking test materials Reseal the boxes, sign your name across the tape, and place all test materials in locked storage in an area at your school where only you and designated assistants have access. No one is to open the bags of test books until distribution to room supervisors on test day. Keep the empty, prelabeled answer sheet return box included in your test shipment. You ll use it to return answer sheets after the test.
Storing & Checking When you remove tests from secure storage, count and verify the number of test books given to each assistant. Distribute and collect materials in such a way that no student has access to test books except while taking the test. See page 29 for instructions on storing test books after the test. Note: When student score reports arrive in December, you will be returning test books to students.
Choosing test rooms Plan to administer the test in areas that have adequate lighting; desks or tables with good writing surfaces and room for a test book, answer sheet, and calculator side by side; an easily visible clock; and separation from distracting noise or activities.
Preparing seating plans Establish your seating plan in advance and seat students accordingly. Or, if this is not possible, assign seats randomly to entering students so that friends or relatives are not seated near each other. Do not allow students to choose their own seats. Be sure to keep a copy of the seating plan and any list of room assignments for future reference.
Seating plans It is important to complete a seating chart of the room(s) where you are administering the test because: It helps to ensure that, after breaks, students return to the same seats. If test books and answer sheets are collected in seat order, the seating chart will help identify whose test materials, if any, are missing. By assigning seats through a seating chart for the PSAT/NMSQT, it prepares students for the same experience when they take the SAT. If you must submit a Supervisor s Irregularity Report, a copy of the seating chart may help ETS determine how to handle the irregularity.
Providing Accommodations Testing students from other schools and home-schooled students If you test students from other schools, please: Make sure you have sufficient answer sheets and test books for that test day, as no other test may be used. Check their current and valid school- or government-issued photo ID. Be prepared with their school s six-digit code number. Instruct them to enter their own school s six-digit code number, or the home-school code number, in answer sheet box 20a. (A list of state home-school codes is on page 32.) Return answer sheets for all students tested. NOTE: We encourage you to allow home-schooled students (especially those within your community) to test with your school s students. Reports and data for homeschooled students will remain separate from your school s data.
SSD Important Changes for
SSD Important Changes for New digital test forms Beginning with the October 2015 PSAT/NMSQT, and the March 2016 SAT, the cassette test form will no longer be available. Instead, students taking the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9, may request an MP3 Audio Test Form or an Assistive Technology Compatible Test Form. Both are delivered on a flash drive. Four-function calculator Some students with disabilities that impact math calculation may require a calculator for non-calculator sections Extra breaks Beginning with the October 2015 PSAT/NMSQT, and the March 2016 SAT, students who are approved for extended time will also be provided extra breaks between test sections for the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9. Note: Refer to pages 6-7 for additional information.
Pre-administration Instructions (Optional) During the week before the test, schools have the option for all students, including students testing with accommodations, to fill in boxes 1 20 and 24 of their answer sheets. Students must fill out answer sheets under supervision in school. Remove only the answer sheets and the flyers listing religion and college major codes from the bags; do not open the separate shrinkwrapping around the test books until test day You may decide to distribute answer sheets in any number of ways (for example, in a class, in an assembly for students taking the test, or in small groups). Do not allow students to take the answer sheets out of the room.
Pre-administration Instructions (Optional) Remember to post your school s six-digit code, address, and optional codes. Distribute a flyer of religion and college major codes and an answer sheet to each student. Note: The student certification requirement will remain, but cursive will no longer be required Note: Remember to review the instructions to students Pagers 8 10 for completing the answer sheets
Selecting staff assistants Select one associate supervisor for each test room. Neither you, the PSAT/NMSQT Coordinator, nor any associate supervisor or proctor may be a member of the household or immediate family of a student taking the test on the same date, even if the student is testing at a different school. In such instances, the related student s scores are subject to cancellation.
Selecting staff assistants Associates should be current or retired teachers, counselors, administrators, or other educators who are familiar with test administration Each associate is expected to: read this manual ahead of time to be thoroughly familiar with test procedures, responsibility for test materials in an assigned room, administer the test according to the manual s directions, and return test materials to you when students are dismissed
Selecting staff assistants Proctors may be members of the school s staff or other adults who have been trained to help you and associate supervisors. Proctors do not administer the test but may: seat students, distribute and collect test materials, monitor adjacent areas during rest breaks, and perform other assigned duties.
Visitors No visitors other than authorized ETS test observers, providing proper ID, should be permitted in a testing room during the test or near the storage location of the test materials. Note: ETS, on behalf of the PSAT/NMSQT Program, reserves the right to make an unannounced audit of your test administration before, during, or after the test.
Training assistants and staff Training session for associates and proctors, please stress the need to prevent any student from having an unfair advantage over other students. Review the regulations in the manual and communicate any local arrangements and procedures for test day. Security of test materials Safeguard test books at all times before, during, and after the test and during the breaks. Keep test books in sealed plastic bags until you distribute them to students at the beginning of the test. At the end of the test, collect a test book and an answer sheet from each student. Account for all test materials before dismissing students.
Training assistants and staff Accounting for test materials If a test book is found to be missing, notify the supervisor immediately. If testing has already begun, wait to search the room until a scheduled break or the end of the testing session, but notify the supervisor as soon as possible. If the test book is still missing, after searching the room, report this on an SIR and ask the supervisor to contact the PSAT/NMSQT office immediately.
Training assistants and staff School code number Post your school s six-digit code prominently in the testing room so your students can copy it correctly on their answer sheets. Make a list of students from other schools and their school codes for staff.
Test Day Procedures Step-by-step instructions for administering the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9 will be available in the Supervisor's Manual for each assessment, which will be mailed to test coordinators. The manuals include: The directions proctors must read without deviation to students. A standard section timing chart. Note: Review the script prior to test day pages 16-23!
After the test Return materials immediately! Return materials immediately, but no later than the next school day after the test administration. Failure to return answer sheets promptly may delay score reports for your students and/or prevent them from entering the National Merit Scholarship Program
After the test Count used answer sheets for standard test- takers. Count used answer sheets for nonstandard test- takers. You must return one, and only one, answer sheet for each student unless notes on the Nonstandard Administration Report (NAR) or on the Supervisor s Irregularity Report (SIR). Note: Follow directions pages
Storing test books after the test Immediately after the test administration (unless otherwise instructed): Organize test books to facilitate return to students with their score reports. Make sure that no answer sheets have been put in test books. Place all used and unused test books (including those used by students from other schools) in locked storage. Destroy all unused answer sheets.
After the Test Test coordinators should return test materials as soon as possible, and no later than the next school day after the test administration. Failure to return answer sheets promptly may delay score reports for students. It may also prevent PSAT/NMSQT takers from entering the National Merit Scholarship Program. Get detailed instructions for returning test materials, paying for the test, and storing test books in the Supervisor s Manual for each assessment.
Data Layout for PSAT 10 & PSAT/NMSQT Electronic Score Reports Effective October The layout will change at the beginning of the testing year, in October 2015, and will remain the same throughout the year. A revised PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT Data Layout Crosswalk that shows the prior data layout positions and the new data layout positions starting in October You can access this crosswalk at collegereadiness.collegeboard.org
A Summary of New Developments Here is a brief summary of the changes to data fields and the layout that we expect to make beginning in the school year: The layout will be expanded to show the PSAT 10 and the redesigned PSAT/NMSQTF scores. All date fields will be changed to YYYY MM DD format. Some codes that are currently alphabetic will be revised to be numeric. Electronic Score Reports will be delivered through the College Board website to enable easier downloading. Other formats for score delivery may be added as well. Changes to the collection of race and ethnicity data, and other demographic data will be implemented. Some logical regrouping of like fields will be undertaken.
Score Report Delivery and Data Access Another change we will make with the school year is the delivery of electronic score reports via the College Board website, integrating with the new SAT Suite of Assessments online reporting portal. Note: The PSAT electronic score reports will be the first piece to launch in the new portal, in October 2015.
Data Access A number of changes have been made to the data file layout, including the collection of race and ethnicity data in line with federal guidelines. We are also aligning the length and content of several fields with Common Education Data Standards (CEDS). This has resulted in several fields moving from alphabetical coded values to numerical coded values. Finally, we took this opportunity to logically reorder some fields so they are grouped with like fields.
Data Access For your convenience, we have created a revised PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT Data Layout Crosswalk that shows the prior data layout positions and the new data layout positions starting in October You can access this crosswalk at collegereadiness.collegeboard.org.
Data Access Note: the College Board will no longer support the delivery of electronic score reports, also known as data files, via CD beginning in October Additionally, paper student score reports for high schools and school districts will be discontinued with the first redesigned PSAT score report delivery. We will still continue to deliver score reports for students to the student s high school. Both electronic score report files and individual score reports will be accessible to view and download/print via the new online reporting portal, for FREE!
Data Access For the PSAT 10 and the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT, we will begin including college and career readiness benchmark indicators at the section level scores; the value of the benchmark scores is pending additional research. As shown in our research, benchmark attainment is related to many positive college outcomes and can be a useful tool in measuring the college readiness of high school students.
