1 16 th District PTA Scholarship The objective of the 16th District PTA Scholarship is to give deserving young people the financial means to continue their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors attending Fayette County Public Schools based on financial need, academic achievement and contribution to the community. The minimum amount awarded, per 16th District PTA standing rules, is $500 per scholarship. Alliance Coal Scholarship Fund The scholarship fund was established to provide awards for students who plan to be enrolled full-time at Washington University in St. Louis, MO who were high school graduates of Gallatin or White County, Illinois and who have lost a parent due to an accident or an illness. Students must have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale and must be involved in sports, extracurricular school activities, and/or employed. Burrier Warren Fund The Burrier Warren Fund was established by John and Sue Burrier to benefit students attending Licking Valley Center of Maysville Community College. Bizzack Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund The scholarship fund was established in memory of Carole P. Bizzack to benefit individuals who are pursuing a career in animal science or veterinary medicine. The scholarship amount is $2,000. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Dorothy T. Givens Scholarship Fund The scholarship fund was established through a bequest by Dorothy T. Givens. It provides an annual award of $2,500 to a graduating African American senior with financial need from Clark County High School. The scholarship may be renewable for up to four years if the student maintains a 2.5 GPA or higher. For an application contact the Guidance Department at Clark County High School. Dr. S.O. Sublette Scholarship Fund The Dr. S.O. Sublette Scholarship Fund was established to provide an award to men preferably from Woodford County seeking a degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Edith Schwab Memorial Fund With the untimely death of Edith Schwab in 1989, the Edith Schwab Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships for graduate students with excellent academic records, financial need, and a desire to follow a career in public service. Awards are between $1,000 and

2 $1,500. Edith Schwab worked as an attorney for Kentucky s Legislative Research Commission for 26 years and was widely known as the state s top expert on the Kentucky Revised Statues. The scholarships keep alive the spirit of Edith Schwab, a woman of extraordinary intellect and compassion, whose dedication, generosity and cheerful spirit is remembered by friends, family and co-workers. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Edwa P. Young Piano Scholarship Fund The Edwa P. Young Piano Scholarship Fund was established by E. Preston Young in honor of his mother, who taught piano for many years in Owingsville, Bath County. The scholarship is for high school graduates of Bath County Schools who plan to study piano performance, piano theory, or piano instruction in college or graduate school. Edward Paul Lyon II Memorial Scholarship Fund The scholarship fund was established in memory of Edwin Paul Lyon III to award a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior of Magoffin County High School. For an application contact the guidance department at Magoffin County High School. Emma E. Buckley Scholarship Fund The Emma E. Buckley Scholarship Fund was established through a bequest by Emma E. Buckley, a longtime philanthropist in Kentucky. The scholarships will be awarded to students who have financial need and are graduating from high schools in Woodford and Fayette Counties. Gabbard-Hylton Scholarship Fund for Eastern Kentucky University Gabbard-Hylton was established in 2013 from the bequest of Majorie G. Hylton. The scholarship fund will be used to provide awards to deserving students from Madison County or Rockcastle County, who will attend Eastern Kentucky University. The scholarship amount varies. For an application, contact the EKU Development Office at Gill-Elliott Scholarship Fund The Gill-Elliott Scholarship Fund was established by Linda and Jack Gill to honor William J. Elliott, a chemistry and physics teacher at Highland High School for 32 years. The annual scholarship of $2,000 is awarded to a graduating senior of Highlands High School in Kentucky. Recipients must have excellent academic records, ACT scores of 21 or greater, GPA of 3.0 or better, plan to attend a four-year degree-granting college, and plan to major in math, science, engineering, pre-medicine, business, or education. Financial need may be a consideration but academic excellence is the most important criteria. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation.

3 Hilliard Lyons Scholarship Fund The Hilliard Lyons Scholarship Fund was established to benefit graduating seniors from Boyle County High School and Danville High School. For an application contact the guidance department at Boyle County High School or Danville High School. Hudson-Ellis Scholarship Fund The Hudson-Ellis Scholarship Fund was established through a bequest by Lottie Ellis. Lottie Ellis lived her entire life in Danville, Kentucky. When she died in 1999 at the age of 91, she made a bequest of $4 million for the good of Boyle County, including scholarship awards for students who reside in Boyle County. The scholarship provides awards for graduating seniors at Boyle County High School, Danville High School, and Kentucky School for the Deaf. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. Jane Allen Newman Scholarship Fund The Jane Allen Newman Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to Kentucky high school seniors with financial need, and who wish to further pursue their education by attending a college or university. Jane Allen Newman was born in Morganfield, Kentucky in the early 1900 s. She dreamed of attending college after high school, but due to the depression and hard times at home, she was unable to do so. She left home at age 17 to work for Maybelline Cosmetics then in Chicago as the company s first secretary and occasional model. Over the years she bought stock, including Maybelline, and invested wisely until she was able to establish the Jane Allen Newman Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to educating needy, hardworking students from Kentucky. The awards vary from $1,000 to $2,000 each year. The scholarship may be renewable for up to four years, provided that the student maintains a 2.0 GPA and remains a full-time student in good standing. Jennifer Leigh Soper Scholarship Fund The Jennifer Leigh Soper Scholarship Fund was established by Lee Soper in memory of his daughter who died of cystic fibrosis. The scholarship will award at least $500 to a collegebound student with cystic fibrosis. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Joann McEvoy Frazer Vocal Achievement Award Scholarship Fund The scholarship was established by J. Howard Frazer in honor of his wife, Joann McEvoy Frazer who graduated from Lafayette High School in She was a member and soloist of the Charmettes, a 30-girl singing group selected by the head of the music department. She attended the College of Music of the University of Cincinnati and met her husband, Howard Frazer, when he arranged for a blind date after seeing her perform in an opera at the College of Music. The scholarship provides a $1,000 award to a graduating senior from Lafayette High

4 School in Lexington, Kentucky, who has excelled in voice. For more information contact the guidance department at Lafayette High School. John T and Willie Hedges Education Fund The John T. and Willie Hedges Education Fund was established through a bequest by John T. Hedges to provide scholarships for female graduating seniors at both Bourbon County High School and Paris High School who have financial need. The scholarship amount varies. For an application contact the guidance department at Paris High School or Bourbon County High School. Kathryn Owen Veterinary Scholarship Fund The scholarship was established by Nancy Kathryn Owens to benefit Clark County graduating seniors who wish to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. The amount varies. For an application contact the Guidance Department at Clark County High School. Kevin J. Crowe Memorial Scholarship Fund The fund was established in 2005 by Gerald and Libbey Crowe in memory of their son, Kevin J. Crowe, a student at Southwestern High School who died of sudden cardiac arrest on April 9, 2004, at the age of 17. Each year the scholarship benefits two graduating seniors at Southwestern High School of Somerset, KY, one a member of Future Farmers of America and the other a member of the Cross Country or Track and Field Team. King-Barton Scholarship Fund The King-Barton Scholarship Fund was made possible through a generous bequest by Elizabeth K. Barton who wished to benefit Harrison County High School graduates. The amount varies between $800 and $1000. For an application, contact the guidance department of Harrison County High School. Kitchen-Challis Scholarship Fund The Kitchen-Challis Scholarship Fund was established by Linda and Jack Gill in memory of her mother and grandmother. The scholarship provides one annual award of $2,000 for a graduating senior from Harrison County High School of Cynthiana, Kentucky. Recipients must have excellent academic records, ACT scores of 21 or greater, GPA of 3.0 or better, plan to attend a four-year degree-granting college, and plan to major in math, science, engineering, pre-medicine, business, or education. 5 Lewis E. Owens LCC Scholarship Fund The Lewis E. Owens LCC Scholarship Fund was established by the Lexington-Herald Leader in memory of longtime Herald-Leader publisher Lewis E. Owens. The scholarship makes awards to students attending Bluegrass Community and Technical College. The scholarship amount varies each year. Licking Valley Center Scholarship The Licking Valley Center Scholarship was established through a challenge grant from the Jane Allen Newman Scholarship Fund, which was matched by donations from the community. The scholarship awards scholarships to students attending Licking Valley Center of Maysville Community College. The scholarship amount varies each year. For more information, contact Bruce Florence, Maysville Community College, (859) ext: Loren Richards Elder Care Scholarship Program, Inc. Fund The Loren Richards Elder Care Scholarship Program, Inc. Fund was established by Janice Richards, Wanda Delaplane, and Phillip Richards, in memory of their father, Loren Richards, who died in a Frankfort County nursing home in 2002 as a result of abuse and neglect. To provide a $4000 scholarship for a third year student in a field of study (i.e., nursing, medicine, science, nutrition, physical therapy, etc.) that will prepare them for a career that will have direct impact on the elderly population. Scholarship will be renewable for a second year contingent on recipient remaining a full-time student in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or better. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Lt. Richard Caswell Saufley/George E. Saufley II Scholarship Fund The Lt. Richard Caswell Saufley/George E. Saufley II Scholarship Fund was established by George E. Saufley II in memory of U.S. Naval Aviator, Lt. Richard Caswell Saufley. Lieutenant Saufley was born September 1, 1885, in Stanford, Kentucky. He attended Centre College and then the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he graduated first in his class in International Law. Lt. Saufley was chosen as one of the first three officers to enter the newly formed Aviation Corps, and in 1914, became one of the first Navy Air Pilots in the country. Lt. Saufley held several world records in altitude and endurance flights. On June 9, 1916, Lt. Saufley had just broken his own world record (8 hours and 51 minutes) when his plane crashed and he was killed. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Lincoln County High School who has military or agricultural goals. MacLellan Education Fund The MacLellan Education Fund was established to benefit children and stepchildren of MacLellan Services Inc. employees. The student must plan to major in business, engineering, industrial sciences, information systems, HVAC, electronics, or related fields at an accredited college, university, or technical school in the United States. The scholarship may be renewable

6 for up to five years of undergraduate academic study if students maintain a 2.5 GPA. Contact MacLellan Services in Lexington, KY or Blue Grass Community Foundation for an application. Magoffin County Scholarship Fund The Magoffin County Scholarship Fund was established by Scotty Patrick to provide $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Magoffin County High School. For an application contact the guidance department at Magoffin County High School. Margaret Hall Alumnae Scholarship Fund The Margaret Hall Alumnae Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to students who are relatives of Margaret Hall School Alumnae in Versailles, Kentucky. Scholarship amount varies between $500 and $1,000. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Perry L. Greer Memorial Mining Technology Scholarship The Perry L. Greer Memorial Mining Technology Scholarship was established to memorialize Perry L. Greer, a native of Hazard, KY, and a coal operator for more than forty years. Perry L. Greer loved the mining industry and was always interested in young people who might follow in his footsteps and further the industry in Eastern Kentucky. The $500 scholarship will be awarded to students planning to enter a mining technology curriculum. For an application contact the Hazard Community and Technical College. Richard E. and Lucile G. Coe Fund The Richard E. and Lucile G. Coe Fund was established by Lucile G. Coe to benefit students attending Licking Valley Center of Maysville Community College who reside in Nicholas, Harrison, Bourbon or Robertson counties. The scholarship amount varies each year. For more information contact Bruce Florence, Maysville Community College, (859) ext: Robert Marion and Ethel Keolker Stewart Scholarship Fund The Robert Marion and Ethel Keolker Stewart Scholarship Fund was established by Nancy Stewart Hindman to memorialize her parents who met at and graduated from Salem High School, Class of The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students from Salem Community High School in Salem, Illinois. The scholarship may be renewable for up to four years, provided that the student maintains a 2.5 GPA. For an application contact the guidance department at Salem Community High School. Sydney G. Mullins Scholarship Fund The Sydney G. Mullins Scholarship Fund was established by Mike Mullins, in memory of his niece who died waiting for a heart transplant at the age of 3. The $1,000 scholarship pays for text books for a graduating senior at South Floyd High School in Floyd County, Kentucky. 7 Thomas B. Bright, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund The Thomas B. Bright, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Thomas B. Bright Jr., former president of Kentucky Propane Gas Association. The scholarship provides a one-time award of $500 to $1000 to students who are an employee or relative of an employee of companies belonging to the Kentucky Propane Gas Association. For an application contact Blue Grass Community Foundation. Thomas D. Urmston Fund Thomas D. Urmston Fund was established by a generous bequest to provide scholarships for Harrison County graduates. Since the scholarship was established in 1997, it has provided over 200 scholarships to Harrison County students. The amount varies each year. Tony Turner Memorial Broadcast Scholarship Fund The Tony Turner Memorial Broadcast Scholarship Fund honors WYMT-TV newsman, Tony Turner. The scholarship awards $1,000 each year to benefit aspiring broadcasters in the Eastern Kentucky region. Scholarship awards are submitted by high school counselors from regions 13, 14, and 15 of KHSAA. Questions may be directed to participating school guidance counselors or the General Manager of WYMT-TV at (606) Viola Phillips Scholarship Fund The Viola Phillips Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 by Scott Davis to honor his grandmother and to benefit students from Jenkins High School in Letcher County, Kentucky. Viola Phillips, a longtime resident of Jenkins, was born in Mayking, Kentucky in 1923 and attended school there in a one-room schoolhouse in Pine Creek. Her dream was to someday become a math teacher. Unfortunately, her parents did not believe that girls needed an education, and she was forced to leave school after the 8 th grade. Viola was determined to make sure that her children and grandchildren had all of the opportunities that she was denied. Because of her devotion to the idea of education, her descendants were able to live better, richer and more fulfilling lives. The annual award of $2,000 may be renewable for up to four years if the student remains in good academic standing. For an application contact the Guidance Department of Jenkins High School. Wilma Pigg Poynter Scholarship Fund for Eastern Kentucky University Wilma Pigg Poynter established the scholarship fund to provide awards to deserving students from Laurel County, who will attend Eastern Kentucky University. In 1919, when most people and especially women didn t have the opportunity to go to college, Wilma left her home in rural eastern Kentucky to study music and education at Columbia University in New York. After graduation she returned to Laurel County, Kentucky, married and taught elementary school for the next fifty years. The scholarship amount varies.
