This year the Department will be awarding mre than $50, t supprt the academic develpment, public service and career ambitins f the students f the Department f Landscape Architecture at Cal Ply Pmna. The schlarship cmmittee encurages students t lk near and far in identifying directed investigatins, fcused research, travel itineraries and service pprtunities. The cmmittee supprts glbal thinking and visining but als recgnizes the truly unique pprtunities f mre lcal cnditins the cmmittee supprts bth brad travel and mre fcused research that may nt have extensive travel as an underlying theme. Applicants are encuraged t utilize faculty expertise in develping applicatins and specific lines f inquiry but nt t lbby fr supprt. All schlarship applicatins shuld address the specific schlarship criteria listed under each schlarship descriptin. Any schlarships awarding less than $ need nly submit a ne-page letter f intent respnding t the schlarship criteria. All schlarships awarding mre than $ must submit a statement f intent; a digital prtfli and any ther requirements set frth in the specific schlarship requirements. Any student awarded a schlarship requiring a prtfli must submit a hard cpy f the prtfli and a thank yu letter t be sent t the schlarship dnr. All awardees will be required t participate in a public presentatin at a future schlarship event.. All schlarship applicatins will becme prperty f the department and will nt be returned. Students are encuraged t apply fr as many schlarships as they qualify, hwever, each schlarship will require a separate and cmplete applicatin. Each applicatin shuld be tailred t specifically address the explicit criteria and intentins f each schlarship. All reference t year-level criteria are fr the upcming academic year students graduating this spring are nt eligible. 4 DON BRINKERHOFF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE SCHOLARSHIP: Purpse: T prvide unrestricted schlarship supprt t an undergraduate student wh has demnstrated a strng level f academic achievement and a calculated financial need. The Brinkerhff award is intended t assist a student pursuing a degree in the field f landscape architecture. This annual schlarship will be awarded t individuals wh are self-starters, leaders, team players and multidisciplined in fcus. Minrity and wmen candidates are particularly encuraged t apply. Students may nt reapply fr the schlarship. It is intended as a ne-time award. Dn Brinkerhff is the funder f Lifescapes Internatinal, Inc., the award-winning internatinal landscape architectural firm headquartered in Newprt Beach. Lifescapes has designed and implemented mre than 400 prjects thrughut the wrld, including casin resrts in Las Vegas such as The Mirage, The Venetian, MGM Grand, Encre Beach Club, and Red Rck Resrt and Casin as well as residential and cmmercial prjects such as The Grve in Ls Angeles and the Fur Seasn Htel in Maca, China. Dn Brinkerhff is an alumnus f Cal Ply Pmna and he and the Brinkerhff family have funded schlarships fr the Cllege f Envirnmental Design and Cllege f Agriculture students fr many years. The firm regularly hsts ENV students and faculty at varius prjects designed by the Lifescapes in Las Vegas, including the Wynn Resrts and Redrck Resrt and Spa. Mr. Brinkerhff als benefitted frm schlarship supprt while a student at CPP and credits that pprtunity with making the difference in his academic and prfessinal career. He wuld nt have been able t finish his studies had he NOT received a schlarship. 5 CHAPMAN FORESTRY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS: This schlarship is prvided t fund Landscape Architecture students in three distinct categries critical t the discipline. The three categries f award are: Travel, Cmmunity Service, r Technlgy. All categries will als supprt prpsals t attend cnferences/curses directly related t each f the three stated categries. The number f awards made in each categry is at the discretin f the schlarship cmmittee. Distributin f awards will be based upn the quality f applicatins in each categry. The categries f supprt are: Travel: will fund students with distinct itineraries and educatinal gals. Cmmunity Service: will fund students wrking in a participatry fashin within a cmmunity in supprt f the department s stated missin. Technlgy: will fund purchases f hardware and/r sftware that will advance student success. Full-time undergraduate Landscape Architecture student Full-time graduate Landscape Architecture student 3.0 r higher department GPA Identified categry f applicatin Travel: Itinerary, including all places t be visited, dates f travel and the names f any persns t be visited during the trip Cmmunity Service: Descriptin f intended prject/cnference/presentatin t be addressed. 6 RUTH SHELLHORN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This schlarship is prvided t fund ne r mre wmen students wh are in the senir year f the Bachelr s prgram r cmpleting their Master's culminating experience (prject r thesis) wh have shwn dedicatin t landscape architecture and an appreciatin fr plant material as an integral part f design. Preference will be given t students in need f financial assistance in rder t finish their educatin. The amunts f the schlarship shall be determined by the faculty and in cnsideratin f the greatest need, t a maximum f $5000 annually. The schlarship is established in memry f Ruth Shellhrn the first prfessinally-trained wman landscape architect f the Suthern Califrnia Chapter f the ASLA and ne f the first female Fellws f the American Sciety f Landscape Architects. This schlarship is administered by the Landscape Architecture Fundatin. 7 CLASS Fund SCHOLARSHIP: The Califrnia Landscape Architecture Student Schlarship Fund (CLASS Fund) is supprted by landscape architects and green industry prfessinals in Suthern Califrnia, and is the mst substantial prfessinal schlarship prgram in landscape architecture. This schlarship is prvided t fund Landscape Architecture students with financial need, strng leadership qualities and the ptential t expand the discipline f landscape architecture. 8 ONA SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP: This schlarship is prvided t fund Landscape Architecture students with a specific interest in cmmunity service. Full-time Landscape Architecture student, any year level 2.5 r better GPA Letter f intent specifically describing the cmmunity service prject that the applicant wishes t undertake and the implicatins f the wrk n the applicant s future directins within the discipline f Landscape Architecture. 9 TAKEO UESUGI SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP: This schlarship is prvided t fund first r secnd year undergraduate Landscape Architecture students. Named in hnr f emeritus faculty member Dr. Take Uesugi, the award is intended t supprt yung designers and prvide funds t braden the applicant s expsure t the discipline f Landscape Architecture. Dr. Uesugi was a Landscape Architect with a deep expertise in Japanese garden design and has always maintained a prfessinal practice while teaching design studis and landscape histry curses within the department. The Galarza Schlarship is prvided t students with latent design ability that wuld greatly benefit frm a three-mnth experience in Italy but may nt be affrded the pprtunity due t financial cnsideratins. Hward Bltz, a pineer in landscape architecture educatin, was the funder f the Department f Landscape Architecture at Cal Ply Pmna, and served n the Califrnia State Bard f Landscape Architecture during the early years f prfessinal registratin. Francis Dean was an early advcate f the mdern Califrnia Garden, as expressed by the San Francisc firm f Eckb, Rystn and Williams with whm he was emplyed, and later as a principal in the firm f Eckb, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW). After his retirement frm active practice, Dean spent the remainder f his prfessinal life as a prfessr f landscape architecture, lending future landscape architects insights frm his ntable career.
