4 FRANKFURT, GERMANY Frankfurt am Main, one of the foremost financial centres in Europe and since 1998 the headquarters of the European Central Bank, has the flair of a manageable mini-metropolis. It is a striking city of fascinating contrasts - historical and modern, commerce and culture, activity and tranquillity. Frankfurt s reputation as an international and cosmopolitan city can be attributed to its position as a commercial centre, as a finance capital and as a cultural centre and, last but not least, to its advantageous location in the heart of Germany and Europe. In Frankfurt students can enjoy an energetic social and cultural life on and off campus. Frankfurt am Main, has possibly on of the most imposing skylines in Germany. Near to the skyscrapers you can find cosy Ebbelwei pubs and at the heart of the bustling city centre you can find historical sights again and again. So, apart from studying, there will always be plenty of interesting things to see and to do, either in the city itself or in the surrounding Rhein/Main region. As of its central geographic location cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and even London as well as the seaside and the Alps are within easy reach. Frankfurt is not just proud of its most famous son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Kaiserdom (Cathedral) and the Paulskirche, the cradle of German democracy, are also to be found here. 7 ACCOMODATION & LIVING Living Costs The general estimate is that students require around 800 per month to cover the cost of living in Germany, however this might change depending on your lifestyle. Compared to other cities in Germany Frankfurt is relatively expensive. Therefore, it is important that you assess your finances realistically. During your application process, you will receive a housing form to apply for a dormitory room. Each semester, FRA-UAS reserves dormitory rooms for international students. These dormitories are not owned by the university. You will be informed about your accommodation before arrival. Transport 15 districts and 11 cities/towns belong to the Rhine Main Transport Association (RMV), including VGF, which is the Frankfurt s transport company and the city s transport operator. In addition to the bus routes, many underground and suburban railways RMV also oversee the regional trains for trips into the surrounding area of Frankfurt. Students are able to purchase the SemesterTicket which is valid throughout the RMV transport district and in interim transit regions with NVV and VRN. 7
