October finds CHS past the initial transition from summer and fully back in the school year. There is too much happening at CHS to highlight all of the great things, but here are a few things you might like to be aware of. October 14th-15th is Homecoming weekend and the culmination of Spirit Week. There will be a variety of athletic events this week and weekend; please consider attending one! We are thrilled to share that we received a grant from VSAC to provide the PSAT s, free of cost, to all 10th and 11th graders. On the morning of October 11th we will be administering the PSAT s to all 10th and 11th graders. The 9th graders will have a special morning program and the 12th graders will have a late arrival. A modified class schedule will start at 11:15. Please follow this link to the letter sent home earlier this year for more details. Good luck to all our 10th and 11th graders! Next Thursday, October 19th is our fall conference day. Please drop in anytime between 10AM and 6PM to meet with your student's teachers. There is no school for students on Thursday the 19th or Friday the 20th. Enjoy the long weekend! In addition, our fall Choral Concert is Wednesday the 18th and the fall Band Concert is Wednesday the 25th. Both start at 7PM and promise to be spectacular performances by our choral and band students. Please join us! On a very different note, the 2017 Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) scores in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) have been released. Our current seniors took these tests last spring. We are proud to report that we have far surpassed the Vermont state average for both Math and ELA. The percent of students at CHS meeting or exceeding the standard for ELA was 78%, compared to a statewide average of 58%. The percent of students at CHS meeting or exceeding the standard for Math was 55%, compared to a statewide average of 36%. Colchester ranked #4 in the entire state of Vermont for both ELA and Math. Go Lakers! As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions! Warmly, Heather Baron Principal And follow us on twitter

4 P A G E 4 What is the PSAT/NMSQT? PSAT ---FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS WHAT IS THE PSAT/NMSQT? The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT/NMSQT assesses critical reading (passage-based reading, sentence completions, math reasoning (numbers and operations; algebra and functions; geometry and measurement; data analysis, statistics, probability) and writing skills (sentence error identification, sentence and paragraph improvements) that are important for success in college. WHY TAKE THE PSAT/NMSQT?????? Benefits for students: To Open the Door for College. The PSAT/NMSQT is a student s first official step on the road to college. It encourages students to start planning for life after high school by either jump-starting their college search process, or for some, introducing them to the concept of college. To Practice for the SAT. On the average, students who take the PSAT/NMSQT earn higher scores on the SAT than those who don t!!!! One reason: the tests have the same formats, directions, sample questions, and question types. Students will get unique practice recommendations from Khan Academy based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. Students will have access to explanations for the answers to every PSAT/NMSQT test question as well as an enhanced online score report. To Earn Scholarships and Academic Recognition. (For Juniors.) By taking the PSAT/NMSQT, students who meet entry requirements may enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation s scholarship competitions as well as other programs that give special recognition to high-achieving students. To Begin the College Search. Student Search Service gives PSAT/NMSQT test-takers the option to receive admissions and financial aid information from colleges, universities, and scholarship programs. To Compare Academic Skills. With the PSAT/NMSQT, students get their first look at how their academic skills compare with those from a national group of college-bound students. To Get Feedback on how to Improve Academically. The PSAT/NMSQT Score Report gives students personalized feedback on their test performance, including suggestions on how to improve specific academic skills. To Explore College Majors and Careers. Students can access college planning resources that can help them explore careers, colleges, majors, scholarships and more. THE TEST: The PSAT will administered at CHS on Wednesday, October 11. This test is for students in Grades 10 and 11 and is a practice test to prepare for the SAT. Students will need to arrive by 7:45 and the test runs until approximately 11:15 a.m. Students will need to bring a calculator and two #2 pencils.

6 V O L U M E V, I S S U E I I I P A G E 6 Dear Parents/Guardians, Fall 2017 Family Teacher Conferences Thursday, October 19 10A-6P Our fall conference day is scheduled for Thursday, October 19 and conferences will run from 10AM-6PM. Please be aware that teachers holding conferences on the first floor will break for dinner from 1:00-1:30 p.m., teachers on the second floor will take their dinner break from 1:30-2:00 p.m. Please refer to the building map provided on conference day for teacher locations. We will have a modified drop-in format for conferences this year. Each CHS teacher is assigned a classroom where conferences will be held. When you enter the building you will receive a copy of your student s schedule along with a school map informing you of where teachers are located. Parents can visit teachers at their convenience during conference hours. Conferences are expected to take no more than 15 minutes. We do not make or take requests for conference times with a specific teacher or team in advance. We strongly encourage all CHS parents to attend our parent teacher conference day. The drop-in format has been in place for the last few years. Every CHS teacher will have a sign-up sheet outside their door. Once parents arrive at CHS you can locate the teachers that you would like to speak with and sign up for a time slot on their door. The sign-up sheet is designed to decrease the waiting time that some parents may have experienced in years past. Please remember that you may call guidance and/or special education at any time to request a meeting with a teacher or team. CHS Teachers may schedule a longer conference with parents through the guidance office for a later date if a more detailed meeting is required. How do parent teacher conferences work? Pick up student s schedule and map of teacher locations in the cafeteria. Determine which teachers you would like to speak with. Circulate throughout CHS to meet with all of the teachers you would like to see. If teachers have a line, feel free to sign up on the sign up sheet on their door.
