2 A Legacy of Leadership Senator Henry M. Scoop Jackson was an extraordinary legislator and master statesman whose accomplishments over his 43-year public service career live on in the work of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. To this end, the Foundation has provided more than $22 million in grants and programs to nonprofit organizations in this country and in Russia, moving forward in the fields in which he had a vital interest international education, human rights, natural resources and the environment, and public service. 3 Educating the Next Generation of Leaders Like Senator Jackson, the Foundation believes in the importance of investing in quality education to help develop new leaders and academic specialists to shape the future. For this reason, the University of Washington has remained a top funding priority. The Foundation has contributed more than $10 million to the University, much of it directed to the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies for scholarships, fellowships, professorships, internships, conferences, and the support of undergraduate education. The Helen H. Jackson Chair in Human Rights, also endowed by the Foundation, recognizes the important role the Senator s widow plays in continuing the Jackson legacy in human rights. Bridging the Worlds of Academia and Public Policy The Foundation helped found and continues to support The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), whose mission is to bridge the gap between scholars and policymakers by advancing policy research in Asia Pacific relations, and by providing top-level expertise in U.S.-Asian geopolitics to America s political, military, civic, and corporate leaders. Supporting Initiatives in Environment and Natural Resources The Foundation has supported many projects that sustain and advance the Senator s remarkable legislative achievements in the environmental field. It works in partnership with other organizations to continue his work in this area, including schooling the next generation of young people in environmental stewardship. Helping to Build a Democratic, Post-Soviet Society Senator Jackson was committed to advancing democracy and respect for human rights globally, making it a central concern in U.S. foreign policy. Because he fought tirelessly for basic freedoms in the Soviet Union, the Foundation actively supports the human rights movement in Russia in its efforts to build a more democratic society.

Culp Fellowship Program Highly valued by the Jackson School administration and faculty for its ability to attract outstanding students, the Gordon Culp Fellowship Program, dedicated by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, provides multi-year support for graduate students engaged in the study of the history, politics, and culture of Russia, Eastern Europe, and China. This generous and prestigious award has made my studies possible and given me the support I need to flourish in graduate school. I am deeply grateful to the Foundation and hope someday to continue in the Jackson tradition and contribute to society through public service.
