Box Bremerhaven, FRG Fax.: Ph: wbgu@awi-bremerhaven.de P R E S S R E L E A S E 96/3e German Advisory Council on Global Change appointed again Physicist Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber new chairman / Second period up to June 2000 / Next Annual Report dealing with water Bonn, September 20, Today the constitutional meeting for the second term of office of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) has taken place in Bonn. The physicist Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber, Potsdam was elected chairman of the 12 members of the council. The lawyer Prof. Dr. Juliane Kokott, Düsseldorf was elected deputy chairman. The next annual report will have his focus on water. In spring 1992 the Advisory Council on Global Change has been established by the German Government as an independent advisory body on the background of growing awareness that environmental protection is the basis for human development and that urgent action needed at the international level. The Council compiles annual reports about current trends of global change and the resulting social and economic impacts. Furthermore, the reports are taking into account the international agreements discussed at the Rio summit (1992) and the AGENDA 21. Moreover, the reports give recommendations for environmental policy and environmental research. Up to date the Council has published four annual reports in the series "World in Transition": Basic Structure of Global People-Environment Interactions (1993), The Threat to Soils (1994), Ways Towards Global Environmental Solutions (1995) and The Research Challenge (1996). Member of scientific advisory councils of the Environmental Research Centre Leipzig-Halle (UFZ), the Research Centre Jülich (KFA), the Munich Air Pollution Research Network coordinator of the German activities of the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems Project (GCTE). Since 1992 member of the Scientific Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). Prof. Dr. Heidrun Behrendt Born Study of medical sciences at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg. Graduation Habilitation at the medical faculty of RWTH Aachen director at the Medical Institute for Environmental Health at University of Düsseldorf. Since 1994 director of the Department for Exerpimental Dermatology/Allergology at the university hospital Eppendorf member of the Scientific Advisory Board on Health under the auspices of the Federal Ministry for of Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF). Member of numerous national and international fellowships. Since 1996 member of the German Council of Environmental Advisors (SRU) and the Scientific Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). Prof. Dr. Klaus Fraedrich Born Studies in Bonn, Cologne, Berlin. Graduation /71 Post doc at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Colorado State University. Habilitation associate professor at the University of Bonn visiting professor at the Department of Meteorology, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. 1982/83 participation in the Distinguished Overseas Scientist Program at the Australian Numerical Meteorology Research

Since 1987 member of the advisory council on Raumforschung under the auspices of the Federal Ministry for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development (BMBau).
