1 International Student Funding There are a wide variety of ways to fund your education. The following financial assistance is targeted to international students studying at The University of Winnipeg to assist students with meeting their direct education costs (tuition and books). ENTRANCE AWARDS Entrance awards are directed to students that are attending The University of Winnipeg for the first time. You could be a high school student, a college or university transfer student, or a mature student coming back to study. Generally you apply to these awards when you apply for admission. For applications and information visit: The Minute Maid Inner-City Leadership Scholarship for Kinesiology and Applied Health These scholarships were established to support students entering their first year of undergraduate study at The University of Winnipeg who are planning to study Kinesiology and Applied Health. To be eligible, students must have a minimum high school admission average of 75% and be graduating from an inner-city high school in the City of Winnipeg. Applicants must have exceptional involvement within their community or high school, demonstrating leadership with athletic and/or coaching programs and services for the inner-city. Preference will be given to Aboriginal, new immigrant or students from low income families. This award cannot be held in conjunction with a Special Entrance Scholarship. President's Scholarship for World Leaders These scholarships will be given to international students who are entering any of the University's divisions for the first time - Undergraduate, Graduate, Collegiate, PACE, or ELP. Applicants must have a minimum 80% admission average or equivalent, and must be involved in activities that demonstrate leadership. This award cannot be held in conjunction with a Special Entrance Scholarship., Grad, Collegiate, PACE, ELP Special Entrance Scholarship The Special Entrance Scholarships are automatically offered to all Grade 12 graduating students coming directly from a high school in Canada, and to international students from the United States or those studying Canadian curriculum abroad. These scholarships are given to students who have a minimum 80% final grade 12 admission average. Students must apply for admission to the University by March 1 in order to be considered.

2 IN-COURSE AWARDS In-Course awards are directed to students who are currently attending The University of Winnipeg and who are in Second, Third or Fourth year. Generally you apply to these awards in the Fall term after you have enrolled in classes. For applications and information visit: Alex and Vera Rosenbaum Bursary for New Canadians This bursary was established in 2005 by Dr. Harry Rosenbaum and Family to honour his parents Alex and Vera Rosenbaum who immigrated to Canada from Europe in It is intended to provide financial help to people who have immigrated to Canada from other countries by assisting them with the expense of gaining a university education. Eligible candidates will have been born outside Canada and show financial need. Preference will be given to those to have come to Canada as refugees or displaced persons. Anne Mahon Opportunity Bursary This bursary will provide financial support and encouragement to refugees and newcomers from Africa to discover the advantages and benefits to a University education. This award is established by Anne Mahon and funded with a portion of proceeds from her book "The Lucky Ones: African Refugees' Stories of Extraordinary Courage", about the African community in Winnipeg. Preference will be given to individuals profiled in the book and their children. Board of Regents Special Bursary - WUSC This bursary covers the tuition costs for the first 30 credit hours for students that are selected to participate in the WUSC program (World University Service of Canada). One to two refugee students are selected by the WUSC every year. WUSC covers all remaining student, ancillary and incidental fees. WUSC will contact Awards to pay these charges and clear the student account. WUSC is a student-run group affiliated with UWSA. CIBC Opportunity Fund Bursary CIBC has established the CIBC Opportunity Fund Bursary, which will work to support Aboriginal students, young people from war-affected areas and refugee populations, and students from an Inner Winnipeg neighbourhood program. Bursaries will be awarded to students who show academic promise and financial need, and who come from a population currently under-represented at The University of Winnipeg who are enrolled in undergraduate studies. Chantal Kreviazuk Opportunity Fund Bursary This bursary was established by Chantal Kreviazuk, alumna of The University of Winnipeg Collegiate, on occasion of her receiving the 2014 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award at the Juno awards and an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Winnipeg. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. Bursaries will be used to cover direct education costs (tuition and books).these bursaries are part of The University of Winnipeg's Opportunity Fund, which helps to ensure that everyone, regardless of background and socioeconomic status, has access to higher education and opportunities. The goal is to ensure access to a University education, bridge the graduation gap, and transform lives through education. It is specifically designed to assist Aboriginal students, people from war-affected nations and refugee populations and students from inner-city neighborhoods., Grad Dr. Lawrence Whytehead Memorial Bursary Established in memory of Dr. Lawrence Whytehead, who devoted so much of his time to working with immigrants and refugees. The bursary will provide financial assistance to deserving students in the Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy program. Preference will be shown to new Canadians and Aboriginal students. Level: Grad

3 Elizabeth Buckland Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established for the benefit of students at Menno Simons College in honour and memory of Elizabeth Buckland. Elizabeth passed away in 2014 and was a person of deep faith who took seriously the Christian call to work for justice. She recognized the particular challenges faced by indigenous people and new Canadians, and saw the potential of education to overcome this challenge. This scholarship will be awarded to students with a declared major in Conflict and Resolution Studies. Recipients must have completed Introduction to International Development Studies or Introduction to Conflict Resolution Studies with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Preference will be given to indigenous and new Canadian students. Frank and Minnie Hechter Memorial Bursary This bursary is established from the Sue and Frank Hechter Bursary Fund in tribute to the determination and ingenuity of immigrants such as Frank Hechter's paternal grandparents, Frank and Minnie Hechter. Frank Hechter was the eldest of eight children who emigrated to Canada from Galati, Romania and settled in Winnipeg. In the years that followed he arranged for his siblings to join him. He married Minnie Cohen whose family had emigrated from Besarabia. Minnie and Frank had seven children, and died in 1934 and 1931, respectively. Acknowledging the impact of immigrant pioneers on present day life in this country, this bursary will assist a continuing student in the Social Sciences. Preference may be given to a student in a designed major which focuses primarily on the social, political, and economic impact of immigrants on contemporary Canadian society. George A. Grierson Memorial Scholarships These scholarships are donated through The Winnipeg Foundation from the estate of Isobel Margaretta Grierson, a 1938 graduate of United College, in memory of her uncle, George A. Grierson. Mr. Grierson was born in Brantford, Ontario in He taught in Manitoba in Birds Hill and Minnedosa, and was elected as a Liberal MLA for the Minnedosa area in The scholarships will be awarded annually to students of Aboriginal origin, or whose families or the students themselves have immigrated to Canada within the last 20 years. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated persistence and strength of character, especially female students. Gisela Saborowski Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in Menno Simons College at The University of Winnipeg who have overcome challenges in the pursuit of their education. This may include but is not limited to underrepresented populations at Menno Simons College such as recent immigrants, refugees, Aboriginal students, adult learners, low-income families, students with disabilities, or first generation students. Guard.me International Student Bursary This bursary will be awarded to full-time international students studying at The University of Winnipeg who are graduates of The University of Winnipeg English Language Program (ELP). Recipients must demonstrate financial need and involvement in extra-curricular activities. This award is funded by Guard.me, the provider of the international student healthcare insurance program. The Honourable Dr. Lloyd Axworthy and Denise Ommanney Opportunity Fund Bursary This bursary is designed to support Opportunity Fund candidates with preference given to Aboriginal students, new Canadians, people from war-affected nations, refugees, students from inner-city neighbourhoods, and students requiring financial assistance through the Youth-in-Care Tuition Waiver Program or who wish to attend The University of Winnipeg Collegiate Model School. This bursary is established in honour of Dr. Axworthy's retirement from his exemplary service as President and Vice-Chancellor ( ) and in recognition of his and his wife's dedication to improving the inner city and breaking the cycle of poverty. The Opportunity Fund is a unique initiative created by The University of Winnipeg to help make it possible for students to dream big. The goal is to ensure access to a university education, bridge the graduation gap, and transform lives through education.

4 International Student Emergency Assistance Bursary These bursaries are given to international students in cases where emergency financial support is required. Students must be registered in the current term to receive this funding., Grad, Collegiate, PACE, ELP International Student Emergency Assistance Fund (ISEAF) Loan These are short-term loans of up to $600 given to international students with financial need. Students are required to pay the loans back within the current session in which the money was borrowed. These loans require an application, and can be given to both undergraduates and graduate students. Applicants should contact the Awards and Financial Aid Office for more information., Grad, Collegiate, PACE, ELP International Student Services Award Established by International Student Services at The University of Winnipeg, this award will be given to one or more current international undergraduate students. Recipients must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 and demonstrate financial need. Recipients must also be actively involved in activities and/or events within International Student Services. International Visa Student Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to international students who are entering Canada on a Student Visa and intending to enroll in a program at Menno Simons College and The University of Winnipeg. It is also awarded to international visa students currently enrolled in Menno Simons College programs. Jennifer Logan Memorial Award Established by friends and family in memory of Jennifer Logan, this award will support a current student at The University of Winnipeg who is involved with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) or is a refugee. Jennifer Joy Logan graduated from The University of Winnipeg in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. Jennifer was an adventurous and fearless young woman. She travelled he globe making friends, but always with the goal of making a positive difference. She was passionate about the value of education and devoted a lot of her life to teaching. She taught abused women and orphans in Nepal, children in India and young women in Saudi Arabia. She was a member and chairperson of the WUSC Local Committee and helped to sponsor refugee students to attend The University of Winnipeg. This award will honour her memory and continue her work by offering help to refugee students. The Maria Graciete and Jose Correia Family Scholarships Established in 2011, this scholarship will be awarded to one or more students in either the Faculty of Business and Economics or the Faculty of Science (Faculty of Science preference given to students studying environment related issues) in any year of study (undergraduate or graduate), who have achieved high academic standing. Preference will be given to new immigrants to Manitoba or their family, and to employees of Bee Clean, or children and family members of Bee Clean employees. Mr. & Mrs. ONG Hoo Hong Memorial Bursary for International Students Established by Gim Ong, this bursary fund honours the memory of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. ONG Hoo Hong. Bursaries will be awarded to full-time international students who have a minimum 2.50 grade point average and who are in financial need. Preference will be given to students coming from war-affected or economicallydeprived countries or whose home countries experience economic collapse during their studies. Students at The University of Winnipeg Collegiate also are eligible to receive bursaries from this fund., Collegiate

5 Norman J. and Gwen Axworthy Peace Education Fund Bursary Established by President Lloyd Axworthy in 2005, this bursary is dedicated to supporting refugees and waraffected persons. These individuals will be eligible for financial assistance in the form of tuition or registration subsidy for participation in any university course/program, preparatory work to facilitate the ability to enter a university course/program and/or for the purpose of international exchange with eligibility open to those abroad as well as in Manitoba., Grad Opportunity Fund Bursary The Opportunity Fund is a unique initiative created by The University of Winnipeg to help make it possible for students to dream big. The goal is to ensure access to a university education, bridge the graduation gap, and transform lives through education. The priority for this funding is direct education costs (tuition and books); the Opportunity Fund will also cover critical needs beyond tuition and text books when required. This Fund is designed to assist Aboriginal students, people from war-affected nations and refugee populations, and students from inner-city neighbourhoods. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and come from one of these under-represented populations. This fund supports multiple programs including in-course bursaries, tuition credits and youth-in-care waivers. Bursaries will be awarded to students who are enrolled in The University of Winnipeg Collegiate, PACE, UIC, undergraduate or graduate studies., Grad, Collegiate, PACE, ELP Pinnacle Staffing Opportunity Scholarship Pinnacle Staffing, one of Manitoba's top recruitment and human resource service providers is dedicated to providing Manitoba companies with top talent. The foundation of their success is a team-based approach, leading edge technology, entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to continuous improvement. The scholarship celebrates this success, and will be awarded to two outstanding students as identified by Opportunity Fund criteria. This scholarship will work to support Aboriginal students, young people from war-affected areas and refugee populations, and students from inner Winnipeg neighbourhoods. Platinum Jets Opportunity Fund Bursary This bursary was established in 2014 by the Platinum Jets Inc. many of whom are alumni of The University of Winnipeg, in recognition of Dr. Lloyd Axworthy's outstanding contributions to the University along with the University's role in the formation of the Platinum Jets Inc. organization. Recipients must demonstrate financial need. These bursaries are part of The University of Winnipeg's Opportunity Fund, which helps to ensure that everyone, regardless of background and socioeconomic status, has access to higher education and opportunities. The goal is to ensure access to a University education, bridge the graduation gap, and transform lives through education. It is specifically designed to assist Aboriginal students, people from war-affected nations and refugee populations, and students from inner-city neighborhoods., Grad Rutman Family Bursary The Rutman Family Bursary commemorates the enduring spiritual legacy of Luba and Fishel Rutman, and the life they build together in Canada. After surviving the Holocaust and immigrating to Canada, they dedicated their lives to instilling the highest positive values in their children and grandchildren - honesty, a joyful acceptance of people's differences, an appreciation of the non-materialistic aspects of life, and a love of learning. It will be awarded annually to a student who demonstrates financial need. Professor John Bosace Memorial Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to a continuing student who is majoring in French Studies at The University of Winnipeg, and who has a strong academic record. Preference will be given to students who are recent immigrants to Canada. Professor John Bosace was born in Paris, France, and he subsequently moved to the United States. In 1960, he came to teach in the French Department at United College, thinking he would stay two years. Those two years turned into a lifetime of service to The University of Winnipeg. His search for perfection and his dedication to helping students reach their highest level of achievement represent his legacy.

6 Salem Abd-El-Aziz International Chemistry Scholarship Established by Dr. Alaa. S. Abd-El-Aziz, former Professor and Chair of Chemistry, and Vice-President-- Research, International, and External Affairs, in recognition of his father's dedication to post-secondary and graduate education. This scholarship will be awarded to an international student enrolling in the Second or Third year of a Chemistry major at The University of Winnipeg. Scholarship for International Students from Commonwealth Countries Established in 2014 by the Federal Government of Canada as part of the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship initiative, these scholarships are awarded to non-canadian Commonwealth students and professionals to pursue academic credit at Canadian universities toward their Master's Degrees. Recipients must be 35 years of age or younger, international students and have been accepted as a student into a graduate program at The University of Winnipeg. Students can be studying in any discipline, but must be proficient in the language of instruction at the Commonwealth university. Recipients of this scholarship will be known as the Queen Elizabeth II Scholars, and will engage with communities across the Commonwealth, learn about cultures and create projects and actions that impact the world. Recipients will join a global community of Queen Elizabeth II Scholars to share knowledge, exchange ideas and collaborate on meaningful initiatives. Level: Grad Student Recruitment Tuition Draw Prize This award is given on an annual basis by the Student Recruitment Office at The University of Winnipeg, to a prospective student who has applied and received an offer of admission to The University of Winnipeg to pursue a degree program. The recipient is selected by a random draw and must have filled out an information card at any of the recruitment events held in the year prior to them attending the University. Both domestic and international students are eligible. The award is given to the student in the following fall when they begin their studies. Students must enroll in at least 12 credits in order to receive the prize. Taylor McCaffrey Opportunity Fund Bursary Established in 2011 the bursary will work to support Aboriginal Students, young people from war-affected areas and refugee populations, and students from Inner Winnipeg neighbourhoods. The Thompson Dorfman Sweatman Opportunity Fund Bursaries Established in 2011 the Bursary will work to support Aboriginal Students, young people from war-affected areas and refugee populations, and students from Inner Winnipeg neighbourhoods. This bursary will be awarded to two outstanding students per year as identified by Opportunity Fund criteria., Grad Yvonne Prefontaine Memorial Award in Political Science This award was established in honour of Yvonne Prefontaine, a student of distinction from at The University of Winnipeg. It shall be awarded to a student in one or more political science courses at The University of Winnipeg, who shows outstanding promise and has a demonstrated interest in human rights or social justice. Priority will be given to a student from one of the traditionally under-represented groups (Aboriginal students, new immigrants, refugees, low-income students, adult learners, or students with a disability) who demonstrates financial need and has a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average.

Remember that most students fund their education from a wide variety of sources.
