A Message from UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta Thank you for joining us tonight as we take time to celebrate our Hawkeye Visions Endowed Scholarship program and honor our endowed scholarship recipients and contributors. One highlight of this event is the opportunity for our donors to interact with our studentathletes. This opportunity will be enhanced this evening, as a handful of our studentathletes will be leading the program. As you know, Hawkeye Athletics receives no state general funding. More than ever before, private support is critical to our success. Each contribution to our scholarship endowment is a commitment to the long-term stability of the program. We keep a close eye on the present, but we appreciate the visionaries in our midst, like you, who help us secure our future as well. Gary Barta Director of Athletics The University of Iowa Tonight we honor Hawkeye student-athletes from all 24 women s and men s teams, as well as students from the spirit squad and marching band, who have received an endowed scholarship. These individuals strive to continue the UI tradition of excellence both on the field of play and in the classroom. You are all deeply committed to the academic experience of our student-athletes, and I know take pride in our impressive graduation numbers. The tradition of academic excellence at Iowa is well-documented and is a tribute to our student-athletes, coaches, and academic support staff. Our goal, first and foremost, is for all of our student-athletes to be put in a position to succeed academically and ultimately earn a degree from Iowa. Endowed scholarship support helps make this goal a reality. Another great tradition of this evening is to publicly recognize donors who have fully funded a named scholarship, as well as the student-athletes who have been named to endowed scholarships. It is our great pleasure to invite you out on the court at halftime during this evening s Iowa vs Notre Dame men s basketball game to acknowledge your involvement and your commitment. On behalf of our staff, coaches, student-athletes, and fans it is an honor to host you this evening. We are deeply humbled, and grateful for your continued support. ON IOWA! 1

Endowed Scholarship Contributor Profile Through the years, Leonard Len and Marlene Hadley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, have built strong and lasting connections to the University of Iowa. Len, who received a B.S.C. in accounting from the UI in 1958, closely followed Iowa athletics in the mid-1950s, while the Hawkeyes were winning two Rose Bowl games (1957 and 1959) and competing in two men s basketball NCAA Final Fours (1955 and 1956). If that doesn t make you a Hawkeye fan, I don t know what it would take, says Len. Len joined Newton, Iowa-based Maytag Corporation in 1959, rising through the ranks to lead the appliance giant as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer a position from which he retired in Leonard Hadley is among the great business leaders in the state of Iowa, and certainly someone who embodies the UI Athletic Department s mission: Today s Hawkeyes are Tomorrow s Leaders, says University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta. Marlene and Len Hadley. Photo by Bob Goodfellow. leonard and marlene hadley cedar rapids, iowa During his tenure at Maytag, Len Hadley was the consummate advocate for UI graduates. His involvement was key to attracting the UI Tippie MBA program to Newton and Des Moines in The education I received was instrumental in my career at Maytag, says Len. UI professors were first rate, and smart classmates made the grade curve very challenging! You learned to apply yourself. The Hadleys are among the leading philanthropists who give to support the University of Iowa. In 2002 they established the Leonard and Marlene Hadley Center Football Scholarship Fund (awarded this year to Austin Blythe) and the Leonard Hadley Professorship in the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business. The couple also has provided additional, leadershiplevel support for Hancher, the Carver-Hawkeye Arena addition/renovation, glaucoma research in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and the Tippie College of Business. As a 20-year member of the University of Iowa Foundation Board and the Tippie College of Business Board of Visitors, Len also has given generously of his time and expertise as a visionary business leader to support the mission of the UI. My parents were victims of The Great Depression, so academic scholarship assistance and the G.I. Bill made me really appreciate what a helping hand means to a student. We ve tried to pay it back, says Len. Our UI experience has been so complete that our interests cover academics, the arts, athletics, and health care. Our financial support has touched all of these areas, says Marlene. 4

Endowed Scholarship Contributor Profile henry and patricia tippie austin, texas Henry and Patricia Tippie. Photo by Tom Langdon. Henry B. (1949 B.S.C.) and Patricia B. Tippie of Austin, Texas, have built a legacy of transformational philanthropy at the University of Iowa. Their generosity has benefited countless students, faculty, and friends at Iowa for generations. This year the I-Club acknowledged the Tippies with the Hawk of the Year award. This prestigious honor is presented annually to a contributor, or contributors, who has demonstrated exceptional loyalty, enthusiasm, and generosity to University of Iowa athletics attributes the Tippies have long embodied. Henry, who made his first gift to the UI in 1953 in the amount of $5, and Patricia are longtime supporters of UI athletics. They have made several gifts to athletics campaigns and recently established scholarship funds designated to help student-athletes achieve their dreams in the classroom. The Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie s were awarded to four Hawkeye football players Conor Boffeli, Jacob Duzey, Brett Van Sloten, and Jonathan Wisnieski for the academic year. We believe in the mission of UI athletics: that today s Hawkeyes are tomorrow s leaders, says Henry Tippie. My wife and I are honored to support today s athletic and academic experience for our student-athletes, which we see as an investment in the future. University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta counts the Tippies among the Hawkeyes most loyal supporters. We are so thankful for the generous support Henry and Pat have provided to Hawkeye athletics, says Barta. The Tippies are enthusiastic fans of all of our Hawkeye teams. They visited with our softball and rowing teams while they were competing in Texas, and they have supported our teams here in Iowa City when they are back on campus. In addition to their visionary support for athletics facilities and studentathlete scholarships, the Tippies have supported the Hawkeyes in the stands for more than 50 years as football season ticket holders. They have been members of the I-Club for more than three decades. Henry Tippie and the Iowa softball team. 5

Endowed Scholarship Recipient Profile melissa dixon junior Johnsburg, IL Douglas d. schnoebelen women s basketball Scholarship Recipient Countless University of Iowa student-athletes share stories about childhoods spent dreaming of one day being a Hawkeye donning the black and gold, listening to the roar of the crowd, celebrating with teammates after a big win. But for women s basketball junior guard Melissa Dixon, the Hawkeye dreams didn t start until much later. In fact, Dixon s first real exposure to the University of Iowa came on a visit to campus as a high school basketball standout from Johnsburg, Illinois. She fell in love immediately, and knew right away that Iowa was where she wanted to be. I just loved everyone I met, from the women on the team to the coaches. I just had a really good feeling after visiting here, says Dixon. The feeling was so good, in fact, that Dixon chose to enroll at the UI and join the women s basketball team without the promise of a scholarship, prepared to bide her time on the practice squad if necessary. Fortunately, she never had to do so. Dixon received word of a scholarship offer during her senior year in high school. Last year, Melissa was awarded the Kris Rogers Memorial Scholarship. Rogers, who became a successful local businesswoman after graduating from the UI in 1983, died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 36. Contributions made in her memory by family and friends helped establish the endowed scholarship in her name. This year, Melissa is the first ever recipient of the Douglas D. Schnoebelen Women s Basketball Scholarship. Doug is an avid women s basketball fan and a lifelong Hawkeye. Upon making his scholarship gift, Doug shared that everyone should try to give back to impact other people is a positive way. A recreation and sports business major, Dixon had a chance to take her Iowa experience beyond the classroom throughout the summer of 2013 with an internship opportunity at the UI Foundation. She was able to see firsthand the impact of private support on student-athletes. Melissa Dixon has enjoyed plenty of success as a Hawkeye on the court as well as off. Her basketball season included: Big 10 Sixth Player of the Year Award Led the Hawkeyes in scoring during conference play During conference play, led the Big Ten in three-point percentage, including finishing second in three-pointers made Tied the school record for three-pointers made by an Iowa player in Carver-Hawkeye Arena 6

Melissa Dixon, of Johnsburg, Illinois, is a junior business major on the Iowa women s basketball team. She was named the Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year last season, and is expected to continue in a leadership role this season, building off a team-leading 12.3 points per game in conference play. Melissa spent the summer interning for the National I-Club at the UI Foundation. As one of her last assignments, Melissa wrote about her decision to come to Iowa and her experiences working with our contributors. Three years ago I made the biggest decision of my life, which turned out to be the best decision of my life. I chose to become a Hawkeye and play basketball for the University of Iowa. From the moment I set foot on campus I was in love with the school. I instantly knew that this is where I belonged and wanted to spend my next four years. Over the past two years, my teammates and coaches have become family. And, I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the love and support from the Hawkeye community; the fans, and the staff surrounding the program. The opportunities and experiences I have been given are so much bigger than I anticipated when first committing to Iowa. Experiences that have stretched far beyond the court and have molded me into the person I am today. This summer I had the opportunity to intern at the UI Foundation. This was an incredible opportunity. I worked with development officers and the events staff, and began to fully appreciate the size of our operation and the impact of private support (it s huge). I met many really amazing and supportive donors throughout the summer. Everyone had an interest in me as a person, and as a student-athlete. That meant something to me. Our contributors are the reason why student-athletes like myself are able to better themselves and live out their dreams each and every day. I could not be more thankful for their generosity, and for my shot at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The season is quickly approaching and my teammates and I are so excited! Please come out and support our program as you are able. I think you will be proud of our effort and our coaching staff and you will see some great basketball as well. Thank you to my coaches, teammates, professors, the I-Club and athletics staff, and all of our fans and contributors for my Iowa experience. GO HAWKS. 7

How Endowments work Endowments are funds with a minimum balance requirement in which the principal is invested in perpetuity and a portion of the fund s value (payout) is allocated for the donor designated purpose. Under the Foundation s spending policy, annual payout will be increased by Consumer Price Index (inflation rate) for the prior calendar year. 19 Golden Pledge Golden Pledge: A Presidential Partnership for Student Success University of Iowa President Sally Mason has developed a program that will double the impact of scholarship funds created or increased over the next four years. The Golden Pledge program will match the payout from new, privately funded endowed undergraduate scholarships of $100,000 or more. Existing endowed undergraduate scholarships increased by $100,000 or more also will qualify for the match. For example, a newly established scholarship of $200,000 would generate earnings of approximately $9,000. The Golden Pledge would match the $9,000 pay-out, doubling your gift impact for that year. This program is an exciting incentive for alumni and friends who share our vision for student success. Sally Mason President The University of Iowa The program will run through December 2017 and is designed to significantly increase the number of scholarships for undergraduate students at Iowa. For more information about the Golden Pledge, please visit (click on Giving) or call the UI Foundation at (319) PROGRAM GUIDELINES: Contributors can create a new endowment fund eligible for the golden pledge match through a gift of $100,000 or more.
