4 ATTENTION: Read carefully for second category of scholarships: *Students will be considered for the following scholarships upon completion of each individual scholarship application provided by the local organizations. Seniors will be notified via the SENIOR NEWSLETTER or KLHS when the following applications become available in the Guidance Office. Students are responsible for the completion/delivery for each of the below listed scholarships. If available, the approximate due dates have also been provided for reference. The scholarships listed below DO NOT use the General Scholarship Application. 5 Local Scholarship Process As you can see from the previous list, many local clubs and organizations provide scholarships to Liberty High School seniors who meet specified qualifications. The following descriptions of roles and responsibilities will help clarify the process. Local Clubs/Organizations will: Determine the desired criteria applicants must meet Establish the application form, any required attachments and the deadline Inform the guidance office of their scholarship plans Review applications and select recipient(s) Inform winners of the process to collect scholarship payment Present award at Community Scholarship Night (May 6, 2010) Guidance Office will: Consult with local groups concerning the scholarship process Announce and describe scholarships in the Senior Newsletter, KLHS, and Guide to Local Scholarships Consult with seniors and their parents on scholarships Submit student s General Scholarship Application to scholarship committees Collect and submit other applications at the request of local organizations Arrange interviews for applicants at the request of local organizations Seniors who wish to compete for local scholarships should: Read the monthly Senior Newsletter and follow the instructions to secure appropriate applications Submit completed applications, carefully following all instructions and meeting deadlines Make sure every application is typed or neatly written in black ink a professional appearance is vital Submit General Scholarship Application as instructed in the Guide to Local Scholarships by Feb 2 nd. Application is also available online through the Liberty High School Guidance Website. (from the high school website, select Guidance, the application will be listed under Upcoming Events. Submit the ACT Financial Aid Estimator (instructions included in this Guide) on Feb 2 nd with General Scholarship Application. Dress neatly and be punctual for any interviews Attend Community Scholarship Night (May 6, 2010) to accept scholarships from local organizations Write thank you notes for any scholarships you receive Attend any local organization meetings you are invited to as a scholarship recipient Local Scholarship Program Timeline: January 12 th - Guide to Local Scholarships are distributed to Liberty High School seniors February 2 nd - General Scholarship Applications are due completed in the Guidance Office March 12 th - General Scholarship Applications are delivered to local businesses and organizations April 16 th - Liberty High School is notified of local scholarship winners May 6 th Community Scholarship Night where local scholarships are awarded to seniors
6 CRITERIA FOR LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarship due dates will be announced in the SENIOR NEWSLETTER or on KLHS for organizations not using the General Scholarship Application. All other organizations will follow the General Scholarship Application deadline of February 2 nd. It is the student s responsibility to submit applications prior to the deadline. African American Association Criteria: Need Scholarship- senior with high financial need and minimum gpa of 2.0 Academic Scholarship-senior with minimum 3.0 gpa Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Criteria: Female graduating senior who is pursuing a degree in education Ashley and Victoria Bernard Memorial Softball Scholarship Criteria: Senior Varsity softball player American Business Women s Association Awards Criteria: financial need, goals, educational background Aquila Scholarship Criteria: Aquila customer (parents or student), rank in upper 25% of class, activities, financial need Required Information: 1.Students must provide verification of being an Aquila customer By providing Parent/Guardian 10-digit Aquila Account Number. Please write account number on Local Scholarship Application under Scholarship Listing/Essay section If account number is not listed, then your application will not be accepted by Aquila. Barrett Wepler Memorial Scholarship Criteria: Overall G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher, must have participated as a Sophomore/Junior and remained a member as a Senior of one of the following organizations, teams and/or squads: Men s Basketball, Women s Basketball, Dance/Pom, Cheerleading, Men s Golf, Student Council, and must have participated in the Liberty High School A+ Program and successfully completed its requirements. Candace Kraft Memorial Scholarship Criteria: female, minimum 3.0 GPA, essay and attachments required to be added to Liberty Senior High School General Scholarship Application. Required Essay Topics: 1.At least 500 words-our daughter, Candace, loved life to the fullest. She also had a great desire and passion for loving all people and helping them recognize their self worth. Describe how you also encompass these qualities and your future plans for impacting society in a positive way word Personal Description ie., hobbies, special interests, family life, goals. Cassie Price Scholarship for Exemplary Performance Criteria: Exemplary senior with minimum GPA of 3.25 who has demonstrated success in the Liberty High School Forensics Program. Clay County Bar Foundation Scholarship Awards Criteria: grades, activities, essay, personal interview and desire/intent to pursue a career in law and/or community and public service
7 Clay County Farm Bureau Criteria: parents must be a member of Clay County Farm Bureau for at least three years, resident of Clay County, minimum 3.0 GPA Don and Carol Fletcher Scholarship to Drake University Criteria: Student must be applied and accepted to Drake University, demonstrate leadership, community service, financial need, and attend a required interview. In addition, students must meet two of the following academic criteria: ACT score of 26 or above, class rank in the top 15%, and/or cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. *This $5,000 scholarship will be renewed annually for a total of 4 years assuming student remains a full-time student at Drake with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above. DeVry University Criteria: Application and acceptance to DeVry, graduate in top 50% of class, ACT composite is not greater than 23. Elizabeth Spelman Health Career Scholarship Criteria: major in health-related curriculum, application and essays required Elks Club Scholarship Criteria: financial aid, leadership, scholarship Federal Aviation Association Scholarship Criteria: one scholarship is designated for a student who majors in an aviation-related field; another scholarship is available for students in general post-secondary studies Forrest Bertoldie Golf Scholarship Criteria: Liberty High School golf participant, male and female award, academics, citizenship. Required Essay Topic: 500 to 600 words-discuss the aspects of your participation as a member of the golf team which have especially contributed to your personal growth. Discuss any character building aspects which may be unique to this sport. George Logan Lucas, JR. Memorial Scholarship Criteria: one male graduating senior from Liberty High School, pursuing a Post-Secondary education Harmony in a World of Difference Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship: Criteria: senior who promotes harmony in Liberty High School by helping create a positive peer climate, citizenship, leadership, respected by students and faculty, and school involvement. Harris Community Service Scholarship Criteria: community involvement, leadership, citizenship, attend an accredited college or vocational school, and financial need is not a consideration Irven and NeVada Linscomb Scholarship Criteria: graduating senior from Liberty High School or North Kansas City High School, attending Park University, William Jewell College or Maple Woods Comm. College James D. Stevick Teacher Scholarship Criteria: education major, plans to attend 4 year college upon LHS graduation, academic achievement, activities
8 Jo Krones Memorial Scholarship Criteria: Financial need, must attend a Community College Kay Bush Memorial Scholarship Criteria: Academic achievement, citizenship, attendance, outstanding service to school and/or community Liberty Booster Club Athletic Scholarship Criteria: 2.5 GPA, Parent(s) is a participant in the LHS Booster Club (Volunteered for a minimum of one Booster event and must be noted on the application), Students who have been in LHS Sports their senior year and at least one additional high school year (sophomore or junior), Students who participated in community service organizations, outside employment, A+ Program, or similar community activities. Required supplement in addition to general application: 1. A 1/2 to 1 page essay addressing the topic Explain how participation in high school sports has impacted your life to date AND how do you foresee that participation in sports will impact your future. 2.One letter of recommendation from a coach in high school. Liberty Chamber Community Fund Scholarships Traditional Scholarship Criteria: citizenship, academics, and 3.25 GPA Technical Scholarship Criteria: citizenship, academics, and attend trade, vocational or technical program Liberty Clinic Scholarship Criteria: life science major, grades, financial need, extracurricular activities, community service Liberty NEA Scholarship Criteria: education major, financial need, character, diverse interests, academic achievement Liberty Hospital/Liberty Hospital Foundation Nursing Scholarship Criteria: pursuit of 2 or 4 year degree in nursing, agree to sign a Scholarship Contractual Agreement requiring full-time employment at Liberty Hospital in a nursing position Liberty Hospital Medical Staff & Board of Trustees Awards Criteria: high achievement in science, recipients selected by hospital staff Liberty Kiwanis Club Scholarships Club Scholarship Criteria: grades, financial need, activities Key Club Scholarship Criteria: member of LHS Key Club, grades, financial need, activities Liberty Lions Club Scholarship Criteria: grades, financial need, and activities Liberty Memorial VFW Post 4043 & Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy Scholarship Criteria: participate in the Voice of Democracy Program, grades, activities Liberty Optimist Club Criteria: attend a 2 year college, community service, financial need, grades, activities
9 Liberty PTA Council Scholarship Criteria: financial need, 2.5 to 3.5 GPA, attend 2 or 4 year college or technical school Liberty Senior High School PTSA Scholarship Criteria: active participant in Liberty Senior High School PTSA Liberty Senior High School Young Democrats Club Scholarship Criteria: 3.25 GPA, community involvement, all seniors who meet requirements are eligible Liberty Rotary Club Scholarships E.J. Frevert Scholarship Criteria: academic ability, activities, financial need, attend any accredited college or university, immediate family of Rotary Club members not eligible H.I. Hester Scholarship Criteria: academic ability, activities, financial need, attend William Jewell College, immediate family of Rotary Club members not eligible Liberty Sertoma Club Scholarships E.E. Pid Lowman Scholarship Criteria: attend accredited 2 or 4 year college or university, essay, 2.5 GPA. Required Essay Topic: 300 words-what civic or charitable activities I have participated in and how my participation in these activities has helped my community and myself. Speech & Hearing Scholarship Criteria: major in speech pathology, audiology or other speech and/or hearing field, scholarship funds dispersed during junior and senior years in college Liberty High School Young Democrats Club Criteria: 500 word essay, community involvement, 3.25 gpa Liberty Takedown Club Scholarship Criteria: high school wrestler or manager for three years who plans to attend college, completes senior year in good standing, minimum g.p.a. of 2.5, and completes a minimum of 10 Community Service hours. Mary Houston Education Scholarship Critieria: attend 2 or 4 year college, top 50% of senior class, financial need, activities Masonic Scholarship Criteria: grades, activities, financial need, must attend school in Missouri McDonald s of Liberty Scholarship Critieria: currently employed by McDonald s with at least one year of service by May 2003 Missouri State Teachers Association Scholarship Criteria: education major, grades, activities, student must express interest in competing for this scholarship with form provided by MSTA PEO Scholarship Criteria: female, grades, activities, and interview. Student must have financial need verified by a reported E.F.C. below $10,000.
10 Platte Valley Star Scholarship Criteria: one graduating senior from each community where Platte Valley Bank has a banking location. Student must have excelled in their effort to overcome adversities and challenges in their personal and/or academic lives. Student must have strong leadership, good citizenship, and above average academic responsibility. Robert E. Black/Liberty Council of PTA s Scholarship Criteria: education major, grades, activities, financial need Rotary District 6040 High School Scholarship Criteria: academic achievement, leadership, school and community service, pursuing a postsecondary education at any two or four year institution or technical school. Dr. W. Scott Taveau Scholarship Criteria: need, well-roundedness, school activity involvement, and scholarship Tree Liberty Scholarship Criteria: academics, major in conservation, forestry, earth science WALMART Foundation Scholarship Criteria: grades, activities, financial need, interview
