1 Kim Stefansson Escambia County School District Public Relations Coordinator Office Cell NEWS RELEASE Feb. 11, West Panhandle Regional Science and Engineering Fair Special Awards American Chemical Society--$100 to Sr 1st place, $ 50 to 2nd place, $50 to Jr 1st place, $ 25 to 2nd place for outstanding achievement in chemistry. The 1st and 2nd place winners for chemistry in the Senior division were Keyaundra Mobley ($100) and Samantha Gates ($50). The 1st and 2nd place winners for chemistry in the junior division were Aislinn Shaffer ($50) and Alexa Valovic ($25). American Meteorological Society--Certificates of outstanding achievement in the field Meteorology were awarded to (Team Axel Balogh, Leonard Agabin), and Jasiah Hicks. American Psychological Association-- The world s largest association of psychologists, works to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people s lives. A certificate for outstanding research in psychology was awarded to Gabriella Rojas-Rau. ASM Materials Education Foundation An award for the most outstanding exhibit in materials science, a certificate for the best materials engineering project, was awarded to the team of Amy Zhang and Richie Dong. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Emerald Coast Chapter awarded projects for excellence in the categories of: Earth & Environmental Science; Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Intelligent Machines, Robotics and Systems Software; Microbiology and Physics. Each of the top two projects received $25 Gift Cards. Additionally, four more projects will receive certificates of merit. The top projects from the East and West Panhandle will compete for a $500 top overall Emerald Coast award. The top projects were submitted by Alexander Pope and the team of Amy Zhang & Richie Dong. Also receiving a certificate were: James Lee, Ravi Raj, Callie Neuhaus, and the two person team of Abby Settimio & Jace Fryman and the three person team of Caleb Fails, Wilis Fails & Jermaine Simon. The Association for Women Geoscientists awarded a certificate of achievement to recognize a female student whose project exemplified high standards of innovativeness & scientific excellence in the geosciences. This was awarded to Olivia Booth.. Sharon Hill Aydelott Memorial Award: Sharon Aydelott supported the science fair for her entire tenure as a teacher in Santa Rosa County, and her enthusiasm and guidance encouraged many students to go on to pursue careers in science fields. The Sharon Hill Aydelott Memorial Award honors her love for science and for her students. Four outstanding female scientists were recognized in the junior category this year in the Physical & Biological Sciences. The first place in the Biological Science was an award of $50, and was given to Sydney Smith. Second place in the Biological Science was an award of $25.00, and was given to Kasey Blanquie. The first place in the Physical Sciences was an award of $ 50.00, and was given to Olivia Booth. Second place in the Physical Sciences, an award of $25.00, was given to Arianna Negrotto. BRACE: Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies recognized projects aiding disaster/emergency
2 preparedness, mitigation, response, and relief or recovery efforts. The top projects in the senior and junior divisions were recognized by BRACE with a certificate and a $25.00 gift card. The winners were Rachel Torres (Sr Division) & Matthew Adling (Jr Division). Reginald D. Butler Memorial Chemistry Award A $50 cash award was presented to the most outstanding Sr. chemistry project. The student s sponsoring science teacher also received a gift card to Bonefish Grill. The student winner was Samantha Gates and her teacher was Pam Hicks. Dr. B. H. Daughdrill Chemistry Award Known as Mr. Science Fair, Dr. Billy Daughdrill, retired chemistry professor at Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College), worked with the fair for the 40 years that PJC hosted it and he remains a loyal supporter. A prize of $50 was presented to the winning Junior and Senior projects. The two most outstanding Jr. and Sr. projects were: Kelsey Boyin Jr Chemistry; Lana Carter Jr Microbiology; Samantha Gates, Sr Chemistry; and Ella Griffith, Sr Microbiology. Joan R Daughdrill Laboratory Award: Dr. Daughdrill s wife, Joan, was head of the laboratory of Sacred Heart Hospital and a great supporter of female students conducting excellent lab research. This year s Sr. and Jr. winners received $50 each. They were: Ella Griffith, Sr Microbiology, and Olivia Booth, Jr Engineering. Escambia County Medical Society Two outstanding projects in the category of medicine and health were awarded $100 each. Exhibitors demonstrating excellence were the Sr Division team of Breanna Pursell, Bailee McGuffin & Alyssa Albertson while the winner in the Jr Division was Diego Brown. Florida Association of Environmental Professionals presented $75 to the first place Junior and Senior Division projects in the environmental field based on projects that demonstrated originality, comprehension, organization, effort and motivation in this arena. Tonight s winners were the Sr team of Axel Balogh & Leonard Agabin, and Dolin Willis for the Junior Division. Florida Association of Science Teachers Each year FAST recognizes outstanding projects from the fair with a cash prize of $25 and a certificate. (These students received an application for this award.) This year s winning exhibitors were: Jr. Sanjay Raj and Sr. Ella Griffith. Florida Engineering Society (FES) Northwest Florida Chapter FES was a returning sponsor and provided $25.00 gift cards to the top projects in the Senior Division in Environmental Engineering & Engineering and Material Sciences. FES awarded these to Claire Han & Alexander Pope. Florida Sea Grant Marine Extension Service A book and framed certificate were awarded to the best Jr. and Sr. projects explaining, demonstrating, protecting, and/or exploring a marine science topic. Those projects were the team of Mariah Golson & Marina Deubler in the Jr. Division and Jasiah Hicks in the Senior Division. Francis M. Weston Audubon Society An award certificate & book were awarded to the best project demonstrating environmental sensitivity & contributing to an environmental issue. The recipients of this year s award was Claire Han. This student received a year s membership in the Audubon Society, a certificate, and a book. Friends of Perdido Bay was a returning sponsor of the Science & Engineering Fair. The organization seeks to improve our lives by reducing pollution. They awarded a project in the Sr & Jr Division that provided Solutions to Pollution, with $50 and certificates of recognition. These were awarded to Claire Han (Sr Division) & James Peoples (Jr Division). The Genius Olympiad was an international high school competition focusing on environmental issues, which will be held at the State University of New York Oswego. The competition will be a 4 day-long event to bring science, art, creative writing, and architectural design projects together. The project that has been chosen to compete in this summer s Genius Olympiad was submitted by Claire Han.
3 Gulf Power Engineering Society awards outstanding projects in the field of engineering. A $25 gift card was awarded to 2 projects within the Sr Division, & 2 projects within the Jr Division. The recipients were: Claire Han (Sr), the Sr team of Jacob Paullin & Hannah Brown, as well as Phelan Delaney (Jr), and Jacob Herrera (Jr). HDR Engineering was a returning sponsor and provided $50 gift cards to two Sr projects. The recipients were Callie Neuhaus, and the team of Axel Balogh & Leonard Agabin. The Roy Hyatt Environmental Center sponsored an award to the project that demonstrated in depth study of specific factors that impact our environment. The winner received a book. That recipient was James Peoples. Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award A certificate and $200 was awarded to the most outstanding Sr. project in computer science. This year s winner was Ravi Raj. Dr. Roger & Teri Jones Award: Longtime supporters of the science fair, Dr. Roger & Teri Jones gave $50 and $100 awards to outstanding projects in a variety of categories: $100 Claire Han Sr Environmental Engineering; $100 Rachel Torres Sr Engineering, $100 Deanna Harwell Sr Physics, $50 Amy Zhang Sr Intelligent Machines, Robotics and System Software; $50 Richie Dong Sr Intelligent Machines, Robotics and System Software; $100 Gabriella Rojas-Rau JR Behavioral and Social Sciences; $100 Olivia Booth Jr Earth and Environmental Sciences; $100 Tristan Dykes Jr Physics and Astronomy; and $100 Alexis Matzer Jr Intelligent Machines, Robotics and System Software. The Lemelson Early Inventor Prize: A certificate and instructions for receiving a $100 cash prize was awarded to a Jr. Student that demonstrated problem solving, empathy, STEM knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking by developing a tangible invention. This award went to Gabriel Parr. MU Alpha Theta recognizes a Sr. division project that creatively investigated a problem that involves high school mathematics. The winner, Callie Neuhaus received a certificate & a letter from Mu Alpha Theta. National Aeronautics and Space Administration: NASA projects increase awareness regarding the importance of scientific research in the area of Earth System science. The recipient who received a certificate was Emma Bailey. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration--The project chosen to receive this award emphasized NOAA s mission to understand & predict changes in Earth s environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our nation s economic, social, and environmental needs. The winning project received a certificate was submitted by Claire Han. Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Inc. This award recognized projects which best represent the mathematics and science of flight with original and creative thought. The projects received an award certificate and a scholarship for a week at the National Flight Academy. This scholarship was a $399 fund that takes care of the full tuition, room and board for the three days of camp. This year s recipients were Devyn Stephens & Deanna Harwell. Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs: One of the long terms sponsors, they provided $50 to one winner in the Behavioral Sciences and one in the Plant Sciences. Tonight s recipients were Hayley Smith (Jr) in the Behavioral Science and Julia Stephens (Jr) in the Plant Sciences. REMG Aviation was a new sponsor and provided $25 gift card awards to projects related to Aviation, Space or Physics, within the Sr & Jr Divisions. The 2019 recipients were Alexander Boren (Jr), James Lee (Jr), Claire Han (Sr) & the SR team of Jacob Paullin & Hannah Brown. Ricoh Sustainable Development Award This award was given to a Sr. project for outstanding effort in
4 addressing issues of environmental responsibility and sustainable development. The winning student received an award certificate. This year s recipient was Claire Han. Dr. John P. Riehm Award Dr. Riehm chaired the Department of Biology at UWF. Because of his love of scientific inquiry and support of budding scientists, his family decided to create the John P. Riehm award as a permanent part of the fair. This award of $50 went to two outstanding Biochemistry projects and to two outstanding Chemistry projects. These were presented to: Ella Griffith, Sr. Biochemistry project; Samantha Gates, Sr. Chemistry; Alexa Valovic, Jr. Biochemistry and Kelsey Boykin, Jr. for Chemistry. Society of American Military Engineers awarded one Jr. and one Sr. exhibitor whose project demonstrated excellence in the field of engineering. This year s winners and recipients of gift cards were: Reese Sayer, Jr. Engineering, won a $ 50 gift card; and Alexander Pope, Sr. Engineering, won a $100 gift card. Society for In Vitro Biology awarded the most outstanding 11th grade project in the areas of plant or animal in vitro biology or tissue culture. This year s recipient was the team Alexis Hanes, Elli Dalton & Kamren Simpkins. Society for Science and Public Middle School Program, the Broadcom Masters Program recognized the top 10% of Jr. Division exhibitors. The following students received a certificate, and a letter inviting them to complete an online application for the 2019 Broadcom Masters national competition. From among the entrants, selected finalists will win $500 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. from October 25-30, 2019, to attend the Broadcom Masters finals. Each of the finalists schools will receive $1000 and teachers of semifinalists also receive special awards. The winners were: Gabriella Rojas-Rau, Aiden Macken, Alexa Valovic, Kelsey Boykin, Olivia Booth, Gabriel Parr, Emma Bailey, Lana Carter, Tristan Dykes, Jackson Helton, as well as the team of Mariah Golson & Marina Deubler. Thompson Excellence in Science Awards This award recognized excellent scientific research from many areas of study. Each chosen project received a cash prize of $50, or $25 per team member. Congratulations to the following students: $50 Eleanor Schneider, $25 Mariah Golson, $25 - Marina Deubler, $50 Gabriella Rojas-Rau, $50 Breanna Pursell, Bailee McGuffin, Alyssa Albertson, $50 Gabriel Parr, $50 Lana Carter, $50 Jackson Helton, $50 Deanna Harwell, $25 Patrick Lapid, $25 - Steven Nguyen and $50 Mallory Sarfert, Annalisa Pusateri, Emily Cherry. The US Air Force In order to encourage the study of STEM subjects, the United States Air Force selects outstanding projects which addressed these disciplines. The following students have distinguished themselves in these areas and will receive an award package consisting of a certificate, sling pack, USB, & dual USB car charger. The recipients were: Aiden Macken, Jr; Alexa Valovic, Jr; Emma Bailey, Jr, and Matthew Adling, Jr. US Metric Association A certificate was awarded to the student whose project involved a significant amount of quantitative measurement and which best used the SI metric system for those measurements. This year s winner was Maria Cruz. US Navy Navy judges selected two outstanding Sr. projects to receive certificates and award letters in the amount of $50 and three outstanding Jr. projects to receive a certificate. This year s winners were: Claire Han, Sr, and Ravi Raj, Sr.; and Junior competitors Tristan Dykes, Liam Hargis and Olivia Booth. Water Environment Federation sponsors the Stockholm Jr. Water Prize. This is awarded to the most outstanding Sr. projects in water science research. Winners received certificates and eligibility to compete at the state and national level for up to $3,000 and a trip to Stockholm, Sweden. This year s winners were: Claire Han, Emma Bailey & the team of Axel Balogh & Leonard Agabin. Yale Science & Engineering Association, Inc. The most outstanding 11th grade project in the areas
5 of computer science, engineering, physics, or chemistry received an award certificate and medallion after the student completes the online application form. This year s winner was Ravi Raj.
