Shelly is the Director of the Mohawk Valley Center for Refugees. Shelly lives in Holland Patent with her husband and two daughters. She began working at MVRCR in February of 2006 as the Manager of the Employment Department. Over the next several years, she worked in various departments and was the COO for 2 years prior to becoming interim Executive Director in March 2012, and then Executive Director in August of that same year. Shelly is a graduate of SUNY Buffalo
4 Brief History The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees grew out of the inspiration of Roberta Douglas, whose concern for Amerasian children led her to work with refugees. Her efforts began with the resettlement of a single Vietnamese man through Catholic Charities in Syracuse. With the assistance of Roberta s husband, a group of local clergy, the Superintendent of Utica Schools, the Oneida County Executive, and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, the Center was officially established in 1979 and incorporated in 1981 with Roberta Douglas as the first Executive Director. The Center has assisted refugees from more than 34 countries, including Bhutan, Bosnia, Burma, Cambodia, Iraq, Laos, Russia and the former Soviet Union, Vietnam, Sudan, Somalia and others. The result of these resettlements has resulted in Oneida County having one of the largest concentrations of refugees in the U.S. The City of Utica now has a foreign born population of 17.6% with a quarter of the population (26.6%) speaking a language other than English at home (US Census). For 35 years MVRCR has been an independent affiliate of Lutheran Immigration and Refugees Service (LIRS), one of 10 national voluntary agencies (large non- profit social service organizations that support refugee resettlement programs and work directly with the federal government). Mission of the Center The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees (MVRCR) assists Refugees: persons displaced from the country of origin. They receive special protection. Immigrants Limited English proficient (LEP) individuals Throughout the integration process, assistance helps them achieve independence and self-sufficiency by developing products and services that enable us to build community with many cultures. Refugees must pay back air fare to the U.S. This can be accomplished through payments if necessary. $ is given to each refugee upon arrival which is paid through the U.S. government. The center helps these people to set up with a place to live. Nationalities The 80 s resettled Vietnamese and Russians; the 90 s resettled Bosnians. Shelly says that currently there are the Koren from Burma and Nepalese Some Sudanese and Bhutanese as well. Some refugees have spent their whole lives in camps. Currently there are 50 languages spoken in Utica.
