It is a service, leadership and community service organization for young men and women between the ages Rotaract focuses on the development of young adults as leaders in their communities and workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects, in a global effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world. "Rotaract" stands for "Rotary in Action", although the name originally comes from a combination of "Rotary" and "Interact" (International + Action), the high school level program created by Rotary International in Most Rotaract activities take place at the club level. Rotaract clubs hold formal meetings, usually every two weeks, which feature speakers, special outings, social activities, discussions or visits to other clubs. Club members get together on designated days for service project work, social events, or professional/leadership development workshops. The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service. To be eligible for membership, prospective members must be years of age, show that they are committed to Rotaract, and show that they are of good standing in the community. After being approved by the club, prospective members are 'inducted' to become members, also known as 'Rotaractors'. Clubs generally charge a small annual membership fee to cover costs. San Diego State Rotaract is the only known Rotaract Club to conduct an interview process and only allows in the top 50 leaders on campus who have a passion for "Service Above Self." 2 ROTARCTIC PRESIDENT S CORNER March 5, 2015 District Governor s Visit The District Governors for each of the 530 Rotary Districts throughout the world visit each of the Rotary Clubs in their District at least once per year. DG Dick Sutliff from Anchorage will be visiting our Club during our March 12, 2015, meeting. I am asking all of our Rotary Members that can to please attend this meeting as this is a very important annual event for our Club and its role District We are the second largest club in D5010, which comprises all of Alaska and Yukon, Canada, and we are an important part of the makeup of the District. DG Dick and his wife Page Spencer will be in Fairbanks for the entire week from March 8 through 13. Dick will visit each of the Rotary Clubs in the Fairbanks area and the Aurora Borealis Rotaract Club during his visit. He will also be attending the Board Meeting of each club including ours on Friday the 13 th. Our Board Meeting will start one hour earlier than usual, at 11:00 AM in the Harper Room of the Westmark Hotel, to accommodate a slightly longer meeting and travel schedules that afternoon. It is also a tradition for the DG to visit club projects throughout the community, so we will arrange for him to see our Rotary Library at Raven Landing, possibly the Children s Museum to see the Pin Screen Project from last year, the downtown Clock Tower, and other projects in Fairbanks. He and Page also want to see the Ice Art Championships and the Rotaract Club will be taking them to that for their meeting on Wednesday evening. I think you will find DG Dick very approachable and quite an interesting person. His presentation to our club will be different than anything you have heard a District level leader deliver in the past and should be very entertaining. Let s greet Dick and Page with the enthusiasm that our Club is famous for in Fairbanks. Also, remember when he is presented he is representing the President of Rotary International and the standard protocol is a standing ovation. It is the least we can do to honor that office and the leaders that dedicate so much of their lives to an amazing level of service to Rotary. Mike

4 I love all of the great works Rotary does at home and around the Globe. Sharing that with guests and new members is a lot of fun. I particular love the Rotary is international, because it combines my passion for service and travel. - Jo Why do you love Rotary?? #rotaryselfiecontest A Club Project with Huge Payback to the Community and to our Club Because Polio is Making a Difference - Althea The February 26 Rotary meeting program presented by Mike Kolasa, Director of the Literacy Council of Alaska proved the benefit that a community project can achieve. In the Fairbanks Rotary year , the club, under the leadership of President Dan Winfree, contributed $32,000 for the creation of a bookstore that would provide space for donated books for resale and for free distribution for needy causes in Alaska, the U.S. and abroad. Kolasa states that this project to date has produced over $800,000 profit to the Literacy Council for its many goals of providing literacy education to people of all ages and ethnicities both in Fairbanks and the Interior. Many of our Rotarians continue to support the Literacy Council through donations of money, books, assistance with literacy tutoring and of course the Biz Bee! The Rotary emblem is proudly displayed in the Forget-Me-Not Bookstore with credit to the Rotary Club of Fairbanks. Thank you, Mike and all the Rotarians who contributed to this community project. The Rotarctic Selfie Contest Enter to win a bottle of wine by taking a selfie and simply state why you love rotary! your selfie to rotarctic@gmail.com today! Each Selfie counts as one entry towards a fabulous bottle of wine! #rotaryselfiecontest Photos may be featured in the Rotarctic or Rotary Facebook Page. Please mention this contest in your .
