1 The Generator Volume 1, Issue 3 The Generator ROTARY DISTRICT 5490 September, 2010 July, 2010 Do you recognize the important person in this photo? SEPTEMBER IS NEW GENERATIONS MONTH Yes! It s our own Ambassadorial Scholar, Katie Murphy! Learn More about Katie in the article on page 5 of this newsletter. Plan to attend the District Conference June 10-12, 2011, where you will have an opportunity to meet Katie. RYA YOUTH EXCHANGE AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR INTERACT TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Inside this issue: New Generations Interact How would you like to increase the membership of your Rotary Club? Could you do more community and international projects with more members? Rotary International has recognized these needs and taken action to establish a fifth avenue of Rotary Service, New Generations. Rotary is about changing the lives of those around us, and it holds a very special place for young people. We forever change the lives of the eighteen to twenty young people we send each year out into the world on Youth Exchange, as well as the like number we host in our District. We have a dramatic impact on the lives and direction of the 120 or so delegates who annually attend the RYLA experience. District 5490 invests something like $50,000 annually in these two programs and it shows. We can be rightly proud of these world-class programs. Rotary International has lowered the age of Interact so now Interact may be done in the middle schools. The official minimum are is now 12 and the ruling allows for the age to go as low as 10 years old. This was done by RI to promote the growth of Interact and expand the family of Rotary. Interact in middle schools provides your Rotary Club the opportunity for students to be involved in Interact at a lower age and then make an easy transition into your High School Interact Club. What a great way to get guaranteed knowledgeable new Interactors. 2 Greetings from District Governor, Jim Green RI President, Ray Klingensmith inaugurated our fifth avenue of service this year New Generations. The young people we serve now are official throughout the world. We all know that our international Youth Exchange Program and RYLA are recognized universally as superior. We also have a very good Interact program. These important movements now are more meaningful for Rotarians and the youth we serve, now that they represent our newest Avenue of Service. Become more involved. Tomorrow s leaders need our help. Mark your calendars now: The Wigwam, Litchfield Park, Thursday, June 9, 2011 Golf tournament benefiting Habitat for Humanity. Friday, June 10, 2011, noon lunch honoring our district s largest club. After the dynamic meal, the District Conference will continue for the rest of the weekend. Yours in Rotary Service, Jim Green Wheelchair Delivery & Friendship Conference Puebla, Mexico November 18-22, 2010 Make your Reservation Now! Print the Registration Flyer on last page! Over the years, many matching grant projects have been completed between the two districts, with communities in our own district benefiting from some of those projects. November 18-22, we will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the warm hospitality of our friends when we visit Puebla, Mexico where we will deliver wheelchairs, enjoy warm hospitality, take part in the conference and visit past and future matching grant projects. Watch for promotional information at to about this opportunity to be involved! You can be a part of HUMANITY IN MOTION! 3 Youth Exchange Orientation Held August in Phoenix Inbound Youth Exchange students, Club YE Counselors, and host parents were treated to a weekend of social activity with a purpose. There will be many exciting experiences ahead for all who come in contact with these brave young people who are spending a year away from all that is familiar to them. While hosting and showing them a good time, as Rotarians, we need to help them remember the (now five) D s: NO DRINKING, NO DRIVING, NO DATING, NO DRUGS AND NO (inappropriate) DOWNLOADS. IT IS VERY COURAGEOUS TO SPEND A YEAR AWAY FROM FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND ALL THAT IS FAMILIAR. TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, CAN BE EXCITING, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE EXTREMELY INTIMIDATING. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW IMPORTANT A SIMPLE GESTURE OF FRIENDSHIP CAN BE. Page 3
4 September is New Generations Month Rotary has many youth programs. The programs for younger participants, such as Interact and Rotary Youth Exchange, are not funded by The Rotary Foundation, but they all give Rotary a very positive public image, which The Rotary Foundation benefits from. They are also very important to The Rotary Foundation, as the participants get their first contact with Rotary, which can lead to future membership in a Rotary club and, hopefully, becoming a contributor to The Rotary Foundation. The programs for older participants, such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, and Rotary Peace Fellowships, are funded by The Rotary Foundation. Of special interest to me is the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution a program that one day might become the jewel in the Rotary programs crown. We have a fundraising effort running for this program the USD95 million campaign which must not be forgotten in our ambition to increase contributions to the Annual Programs Fund and Permanent Fund and to meet Rotary s USD200 Million Challenge. All our youth programs are peace programs. In particular, our Youth Exchange participants act as ambassadors of peace when going to a totally new environment. We ask a lot from them, and we can be very proud of them. All our students younger or somewhat older, at home or abroad participate in local projects, thus Building Communities Bridging Continents through Service Above Self. Be an advocate with your local schools, church youth groups, and other youth organizations to encourage high school sophomores and juniors to apply. 5 Ambassadorial Scholar, Katie Murphy, is heading to Oxford University PDG, George Wheeler She received her assignment to begin her studies at this hallowed university in fall of 2011 where she will enter a Masters Degree program in Russian Language and Eurasia political structure. Katie recently completed a summer internship with the National Security Council. Returning to the US Military Academy at West Point for her first class (senior) year, she was selected to serve as the Operations Officer for the Corps of Cadets. This is one of the top five cadet leadership positions at the Academy. Katie started her association with Rotary as a member of the Mountain Ridge High School Interact Club and was one of the first students of the month of the Peoria North Rotary Club. She was Valedictorian of her class at Mountain Ridge and received an early appointment to the Military Academy. She has maintained her academic excellence by consistently scoring in the top 10% of her class. Katie would tell you that the toughest part of her life at the Academy has been the physical training. In particular, "getting my petite body up and over that platform on the obstacle course." Yet she has earned her jump wings by completing Ranger training a couple of summers ago. Her Ambassadorial Scholarship is one of the Rotary Foundation programs and it will be paid by the District from our District Designated Funds for Rotary Year The scholarship is worth $26,000. We are extremely proud of Katie and her accomplishments. You can look forward to meeting her and hearing her speak at our District Conference in June WE LL BE HEARING A LOT FROM KATIE MURPHY, (OUR AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR) Page 5 Page 5
6 New Generations Interact (continued from page 1 - by Carl Balderson) Interact is the service club program for youth ages Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting, and can be either school or community based. Interact Clubs benefit from sponsorship by individual Rotary Clubs, which provide assistance and guidance. In District 5490 Interact runs the gambit from world class to struggling. We have one of the world s largest and most active Interact Clubs at Washington High School in Phoenix. At the same time, we have at least three High Schools with interested students and faculty sponsors that cannot find a Rotarian willing and able to spend time with them. We have other Interact Clubs where we essentially abdicate the guidance and oversight to a non-rotarian faculty member who may or may not have any interest in Rotary. In order to grow our New Generation of Rotarians, we must tend the garden. Through Interact, Rotary has the opportunity to positively touch the lives of thousands of young people with very little monetary investment. However, Rotarian need to spend time cultivating these young people. We are attempting to form a District Interact Council. The Interact Council will be made up of Interact students from across the District, similar to the Rotary District structure, self-governing, with guidance from Rotarians, and self-supporting. The idea is to connect Interactors and create a venue for leadership training of club officers and the sharing of Rotary ideals, ideas for service projects, fundraising efforts, and maybe even a joint district-wide project. Visit to see what the 6,000+ Interactors are doing in District We have about 1,500 Rotarians in District Think of the leverage we could produce, turning many young people onto a life of Service Above Self, moving on to Rotaract as collegians and young professionals, and one day becoming Rotarians. You may be the missing piect if not now, when; if not you, who? Our Interact District Council will hold its Fall Leadership Conference with District 5510 on Sunday October 24 th at ASU in Tempe. This conference is intended for the current year officers of all our District Interact Clubs. Cost will be minimal. Details of times specific campus will be distributed to all Interact Clubs and sponsors we have been able to identify. It may require some effort of the part of sponsoring Rotarians to provide transportation. Good things are happening with Interact in District Take part in turning those good things into great things. Together we can make Interact into the same world-class program across our District as we currently enjoy with RYLA and Youth Exchange! Youthact is now Interact in Middle School by PDG Don Schiller The high school and middle school Interact programs remain as separate programs for each grade levels of students. This avoids any concern that the younger students may not fit in with the high school program. However, if you like, you may certainly have your high school Interact Club help with the middle school Interact Club. It is a great experience for all and helps the student s progression from middle school to high school Interact. Your high school Interact Club could be the middle club s sponsor along with your Rotary Club. How do you set up and run Interact in a middle school? It s easy and we already have a great program with handbook available for you. Plus PDG Don Schiller is willing to work with you personally to develop the Interact Club in your middle school. All you have to do is ask him! Your club will need a few dedicated Rotarians who want to make this program work. They could be some of the same Rotarians who are involved in your high school program. Or they could be Rotarians who would like to accept this challenge and provide a great opportunity in your local middle schools. Prescott Valley Rotary Club sponsors a very successful middle school Interact Club. The students are fully capable of running an Interact Club and they look forward to the challenges. The program is based on a modification of the high school interact club program to fit the younger ages. The overall operations and programs are the same but just done on a more limited basis. The training is open to all District Rotarians regardless of their number of years in Rotary. I strongly encourage each club to promote this exceptional training to your club members. An RLI Information Form and the Registration Form are both available on the district website. Questions should be directed to Kevin Pitts, RLI Coordinator at or kevin.pitts@wfadvisors.com.
