1 Oyster Bay High School December 2018 Newsletter INFORMATION ON ACCESSING FINANCIAL AID The information provided below will assist you in obtaining financial aid. Some colleges require that students complete financial aid applications before they may qualify for scholarships. The main way for students to secure money and qualify for scholarships for college is by applying for financial aid. The FSA ID is a secure username and password that you will use to log into the FAFSA. You may create your FSA ID any time prior to starting the financial aid application. Visit: to create your FSA ID. If you don't have one by the time you fill out your FAFSA, you will be prompted to apply for one. You may apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at and the New York State TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) form online beginning on October 1 st of your senior year. New York State (NYS) Residents attending NYS schools will have the option to link directly to the TAP application from the FAFSA submission confirmation page. If you exited the FAFSA before selecting this option, you can complete the application after NYS HESC (New York State Higher Education Services Corporation) receives your FAFSA data (three days). HESC will send you an or postcard notifying you to complete the TAP application online. If you did not select the FAFSA link to TAP at the end of the FAFSA application, you may visit the TAP web page at *If you would like to obtain a financial aid estimate, you may visit SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Please be aware that scholarship scams exist. We do not recommend that you use your own money for a scholarship program. You can find scholarships through: Checking the website of the college/s you hope to attend. Visit college websites and look under the Financial Aid/ section to find scholarship opportunities Use scholarship search engines. A list of websites is provided in this bulletin. Ask family members to find out if the companies they work for provide scholarships/monetary awards. 1

2 SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH WEBSITES: : (*Please be mindful of the individual deadlines for each college that participates) SCHOLARSHIPS *Deadline dates given are the DUE dates, so you will need to obtain the application and/or supplemental materials ahead of time. If you need a letter of recommendation, transcripts, etc. as part of the scholarship application, be sure to allow time for the processing of these materials. Award Information/ Requirements/Website Deadline American Heritage Association of Fire Districts of the State of New AXA Achievement Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising National The Island Christian Church will be awarding two $2,000 scholarships, one male, and one female to Long Island students whose lives exemplify genuine character and promote scriptural values upon which our country was founded. Up to four $750 High Honorable Mention scholarships may also be awarded regardless of gender. Selection of the winners will be based upon an essay written by the applicant as well as three recommendations. All required nominations and recommendations must be received by deadline. Visit: $1,500 The Ned Carter Memorial is available to New York State high school seniors who will be graduating in June The student MUST be related to a firefighter, be a firefighter, or be an explorer in a fire department that is a member of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York. Visit: AXA provides over $1.4 million in scholarships to students throughout the nation representing all 50 states. Students have the opportunity to receive a $2,500, $10,000 or $25,000 scholarship. In addition, for every student who wins a scholarship, a grant in the amount of $1,000 will be made to the winner s school. Showcase your talent as you demonstrate a strong understanding of aesthetics and the ability to push your limits, in our 2019 National Competition, featuring Celebrity Judge Kris Jenner. 3 Competition FASNY (Firemen s Association of the State of New York) Foot Locker Scholar Athlete GE- Reagan Foundation Island Drafting and Technical Institute Ithaca College MLK Scholar Program Ithaca College Park Scholars Jenkins Memorial for Teacher Education (NYS PTA) scholarships. Visit: $1,500 There are 25 scholarships available. Applicants must be a member in good standing with FASNY or have a parent/legal guardian who is a member, attend high school as a senior, be enrolled at an accredited 2 or 4 years institution or accredited technical post-secondary school in the Fall of 2019, serve as a current Junior firefighter, Explorer scout, or RAM in a group affiliated with a volunteer department; be a volunteer firefighter; or be a volunteer with an EMS unit, and demonstrate a commitment to both volunteer emergency service and the community. Visit: $20,000 Foot Locker will be awarding incoming college freshman with $20,000 in scholarship funding to pursue a 4-year college degree not because they scored the most touchdowns or goals, but because sports have helped them grow into strong leaders at school and in their communities. Visit: $10,000 The GE Reagan Foundation s annually awards roughly 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Visit: $2,500 This scholarship for high school seniors can be applied to tuition costs for the Computer Aided Drafting and Design and the Electronic and Computer Service Technology Programs at Island $25,000 to full tuition Full Drafting and Technical Institute. The MLK Scholar Program is open to academically talented US citizens and permanent residents from ethic and racial backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in US higher education. Visit: At least 10 merit-based scholarships are awarded to outstanding high school seniors each year. tuition Visit: $3,000 Eligible public high school seniors are those who plan to prepare for a teaching career, plan to attend a college of the State University of New York for baccalaureate degree in education -ORplan to attend a two year community college before transferring to a baccalaureate degree program in education in a college of the State University of New York, have not accepted scholarships exceeding the monetary value of $16,000, and attend a public high school in New York State in a school district where there is a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing. 4 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest John P. McNulty Scholars Program at St. Joseph s University, PA Full or Partial Tuition The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest encourages students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates their understanding of political courage as defined by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Applicants are expected to consult and cite several source materials while constructing their essay. Awards will include a $10,000 1st place prize, $1,000 2nd place prize, five finalist prizes at $500 each, as well as eight honorable mentions at $100 each. Visit: First-year female student who has applied to St. Joseph s University for the Fall 2019 semester. You do not need to be admitted to SJU before you apply to the McNulty program. Must be interested in majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Biology, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Should have a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative high school GPA on a 4.0 scale. Should have a combined critical reading and math score of at least 1360 on the SAT or 29 ACT composite. Visit: LI2Day $2,500 This scholarship was established to recognize the profound effect of breast cancer/other women s cancer have on a family. This scholarship is designed for a high school senior who is a survivor themselves of breast cancer/other women s cancer, resides with a parent/guardian who is a survivor of breast cancer/other women s cancer, or resided with a parent/guardian who has passed from breast cancer/other women s cancer. Visit: Long Island Mathematics Maria A. Sciara McDonald s HACER National $1,500 The Long Island Mathematics Conference Board will award up to four scholarships to deserving high school seniors from Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk counties, of African American, Native American or Non-European Hispanic American descent. These students must plan to major in mathematics at an accredited college or university of their choice. Only high school seniors are eligible for this award. Applications are available in the OBHS Counseling office. $2,500 Those aspiring to become teachers will be given extra consideration. 3 graduating seniors in Nassau and Suffolk counties will receive this award. The student must be a survivor of any cancer, reside with, or resided with a parent/guardian who is a survivor of passed from any cancer other than breast cancer and/or other women s cancers. Visit: McDonald s HACER Program was created to grant eligible Hispanic student aid so they can achieve their dreams through higher education. Over 31 million dollars has been granted. Walsh WE CARE NYSIR Student s OBHS PTSA s Ron Brown Program Molloy College offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen students. Among them are full tuition scholarships, with a deadline of December 15th. The Dominican American scholarship, awarding $4,000 to $20,000 depending on student achievement, deadline is March 1st. The Molloy Community Service Award, granting $500 to $5,000 to students who demonstrate a commitment to their community and their school, deadline is March 1st. The Fine Arts s award partial or full tuition scholarships and are granted to individuals who display outstanding achievement in the fine arts. Visit: 1/31/19 $1,500 Selection of candidates is based on several factors, with emphasis on character, personal involvement in school activities and the community, especially those activities which benefit the less fortunate. If interested, visit the Counseling Center for an application. ($3,000- $5,000) NYSIR offers 3 scholarships for college-bound seniors: Bambino : Available to a Special Education student. Jensen : Available to a student who has excelled in design in high school. Goncalves : Available to student from SYSIR subscriber district who plans to attend college in NYS. Student should be able to demonstrate a record of involvement and work for a cause or organization that promotes social justice, equal opportunity, and relief of human suffering or other humanitarian activity. Visit: Eligibility: A graduating senior planning to attend a two or four-year college or university. Students applying must be current members of the OBHS PTSA by the deadline date, and the cost for student membership is $5. Students may access the PTSA enrollment form by visiting: Students may apply for multiple scholarships by completing the essay and application for each category. Applications are available in the OBHS Counseling Office The Ron Brown Program seeks to identify African American students who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential and make an impact on their communities through service to others. 6 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Seton Hall University Martin Luther King Jr. Skidmore College s The Sparkling Ice Flavorful Futures University of Dayton Leadership in Service University of Michigan Joseph M. Geisinger The Scholastic Awards partners with organizations to offer students Special Awards: special opportunities to receive additional scholarships for works in certain categories or dealing with particular themes. For more information, visit: This scholarship is awarded in the Fall semester to incoming freshmen who have outstanding academic records, have overcome economic or educational hardship, and have a serious commitment to addressing issues of social justice as servant leaders or as scholars. This scholarship ranges from $6,500 to $8,500 and is renewable contingent upon maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Visit: Skidmore College is offering scholarship opportunities in the areas of science and math, as well as music. The Porter Presidential in Science and Mathematics, available to 5-7 students per year, offers $15,000 annually or $60,000 for all four years. The Filene Music is available to 4-6 students per year and awards $15,000 annually, or $60,000 over four years. Visit: $5,000 The Sparkling Ice Flavorful Futures will award 5 scholarships of $5,000 that celebrate students individuality, creativity, and communication of future goals. Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, enroll in a 2 or 4-year college, university, trade, or vocational school in the Fall 2019 semester, and cannot be a relative or dependent of an employee of Talking Rain. Visit: $10,000 This scholarship is worth $10,000 ($2,500 per year for four years), and recipients will also be considered for a merit scholarship, worth up to $98,000 over four years. While the chosen students need to meet our admission standards, we are looking for student with an innate desire to learn and grow in service to others. Please see your counselor if you are interested. $20,000 per year This scholarship is available to first-year students entering the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Recipients must be enrolling at the University of Michigan and pursuing an undergraduate degree program in Engineering. Visit: viewform?edit_requested=true WACE To qualify for this scholarship, students must have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must apply for the academic year at one of the WACE Partner Institutions.
