8 Youth Service Leadership of PDG Herb Jerry, Rotary District 7150 is actively involved in Interact with District Chair Jenny Doan: A club for young people in their community or school. Rotaract with District Chair Tom Taylor: this club gives young people exposure to new cultures and customs and promotes global understanding and peace. Students spend time in another country living with different host families and attending classes at the local schools. Rotary Youth Leadership Award with District chair Larry Richardson: An intensive training program for young adults ages The program usually involves seminars, camps, or workshops organized by Rotarians and held over 3-10 days. Rotary Global Rewards Program For more information visit: From the District Governor Organize a Rotary Community Corp (December 7150 Newsletter) A Rotary Community Corp (RCC) is a group of non-rotarians who share our commitment to service. RCC members plan and carry out projects in their communities and support local Rotary Club projects. An example is the RCC of San Miguel in Guadalajara, Mexico giving scholarships to high school students from poor families. Another example is the RCC of Cura Village in Nairobi, Kenya who provides educational funding and equipment for a local orphanage. How to join or organize and RCC: A local club can sponsor this group. Contacting a club who sponsors this group is the means to joining. By sponsoring an RCC, you are giving a large segment of your community the opportunity to proactively address issues where they live. Community members with a vested interest in a project are more likely to make sure that the project lives on. You can form an RCC anywhere non-rotarians are interested in working with Rotary. Here are some guidelines: -Assess your community needs. Find out where an RCC could have the biggest impact and what kinds of projects would be most effective. - Promote the RCC to your club. Make sure you have buy-in from members and outline your club's role as a sponsor. Recruit RCC members. Start with a core group of members. Community organizations and non-governmental agencies are a good place to recruit. Learn more about sponsoring an RCC and carrying out an RCC project here: Volunteers needed District Conference Committee Three positions need to be filled. These include Program Coordinator, Registrar in Training, and Sergeant at Arms in training. Full job descriptions at:
9 Rotary International The Rotary International Conventions Future locations for Rotary International Conventions: Seoul, Korea on May 29-June 1, 2016 Atlanta Georgia USA on June 10-14, 2017 Toronto, Ontario, Canada June 24-27, 2018 From the Rotarian December 2015 issue Spin Doctors by Monika Lozinska The cobblestone streets in Cuernavaca, Mexico are very hard on wheels and bearings. For people in wheelchairs, a mechanical breakdown increases the social isolation they often face. An enterprising group is training people with disabilities to fix wheelchairs and even create the idea of roadside assistance t wheelchair users in other cities. Erik friend of the Rotary Club of Cuernavaca-Juarez, Mexico was volunteering with Autonomy, Liberation Through Movement (ALEM) and believed in its vision and work. ALEM s employees design, build, and repair standard and sports wheelchairs, recumbent tricycles, and other custom wheeled devices. They work out of a garage workshop in Cuernavaca and staff mobile units that travel to cities such as Puebla and Veracruz. Other groups distribute wheelchairs but AKEM is the only wheelchair repair operation in the state of Morelos. It provides essential service in a place where wheelchairs often break down within a year. ALEM opened new doors for me, says Gilberto Beltran Montero who was paralyzed after being shot in a mugging.i thought that I would never be able to do anything. Erik Friend is now the president of ALEM and knows that learning a skill has made workers like Beltran more confident and self reliant. Local auto mechanics often bring aluminum welding projects to ALEM which is one of the few places equipped to do that kind of a job. In 2013, the Rotary Clubs of Paoli-Malvern-Berwyn, Pa and Cuernavaca-Juarez used a Rotary Foundation grant to purchase parts and equipment for ALEM s repair operations. The next year, they received a Rotary global grant to purchase a trailer and van for ALEM s mobile repair service, continue funding needed parts and supplies, and support training, education and outreach programs.
