1 February 2016 To Whom It May Concern: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington D.C. and is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on the ideals of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service to all Mankind. The Mu Eta Omega Chapter of was chartered in 1978 in Junction City, KS. For over 38 years, the Mu Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has been serving the Manhattan, Fort Riley, and Junction City communities. The Kappa Pi Chapter of was chartered in 1976 on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. For over 40 years, the Kappa Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has been serving the Kansas State University campus and Manhattan community. In addition to serving their communities, both chapters recognize the importance of education and the financial needs of students who desire to pursue post-secondary education. Mu Eta Omega and Kappa Pi award scholarships to assist economically disadvantaged, ethnic minority high school senior females, from Junction City High School or Manhattan High School with the financing of their first year of undergraduate college education. The scholarships are awarded to the student(s) who demonstrates high scholastic achievement, strong leadership ability, with active involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Enclosed you will find the 2016 scholarship application. The deadline for submittal is Thursday, March 31, Applications must be typed. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. 2 2016 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES Complete and submit the scholarship application form and all required documents to your high school s counselors office by the deadline date of Thursday, March 31, ELIGIBILITY Economically disadvantaged, ethnic minority, high school female seniors graduating in May 2016 from either Junction City High School or Manhattan High School are eligible to apply. INSTRUCTIONS Submit the enclosed Application Form along with the following documents: A Personal Statement, introducing yourself to the community. The statement must be a minimum of 100 words in length on one page or less and typed in double-spaced form, times new roman font, size 12). Write an Essay on your educational/career goals. The essay must have a minimum of 500 words and be typed in double-spaced form, times new roman font, size 12. Please include the following as well as any additional information you would like to provide: o Proposed field of study o Reason for its selection o Career goals o Institution you wish to attend o How will this scholarship benefit you (i.e. Financial Need)? Resume of Activities capturing your involvement throughout your entire high school career (enclosed). An official high school transcript in a sealed envelope Submit three (3) Letters of Recommendation (*1 from a Teacher, Counselor or School Administrator; *1 from a Sponsor or Coach; and *1 from a Community Leader or Employer. A community leader can include a Pastor, Scout Leader, or a Teen Leader) Please Note: ONLY one from each category. A personal photo (attach to the upper right corner of the application) SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT & PAYMENT Two scholarships will be awarded: A $250 scholarship from the Mu Eta Omega Chapter and a $150 scholarship from the Kappa Pi Chapter. The recipient must be an economically disadvantaged, ethnic minority, female high school student from either Junction City High School or Manhattan High School. Recipients must submit proof of full time enrollment at an accredited college or university to comply with scholarship guidelines. Checks will be made payable to the recipients and may be used towards tuition, books, or supplies. The check must be claimed by no later than December 31, SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON The scholarship applicants will be invited to a Scholarship Luncheon which will take place in May. Formal invitations will be mailed to applicants.
