Evidence of excellence or potential for excellence in practice, scholarship, and leadership in professional education. 3. Evidence of membership in an under-represented group and of financial need. MIT Alumni Fund for Excellence Amount Awarded: Varies Purpose of the Award: To recognize outstanding MIT candidates who have financial need. 1. Evidence of financial need Diane and Gary Buckley Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education Amount Awarded: $ (1-2 awards per year) Purpose of the Award: To provide for a teacher education student who is pursuing a career in education.

2 1. Be enrolled as a student at Seattle University in a College of Education program; 2. Demonstrate financial need; 3. Demonstrate experiences that illustrate a commitment to the mission of the College of Education, educating the whole person and empowering leaders for a just and humane world. 4. Represent and/or demonstrate experiences illustrating commitment to historically excluded or marginalized communities. 5. May be currently working in schools/field of education with a goal to pursue education certification/credentials Kenneth R. Hill Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education Amount Awarded: $5000 (1-2 awards per year) Purpose of the Award: To support students who wish to pursue a career in elementary education 1. Be enrolled in a teacher certification program either within the College of Education, or supported by the College of Education through an SU campus partner program; 2. Demonstrate financial need; 3. Demonstrate an understanding and dedication to the importance of promoting the field of education for non-traditional students and students from traditionally underrepresented populations as classroom teachers; and 4. Demonstrate a career goal of pursuing elementary education; if no student meets this criteria in a particular year, then the award can be made to a student pursuing secondary education. Michelle Jordan Memorial Endowed Scholarship Amount Awarded: $2000-$2500 Purpose of the Award: To provide for a teacher education student who is pursuing a career in education with an interest in teaching foreign languages 1. Be enrolled as a student at Seattle University in a College of Education program; 2. US citizen and a graduate of a Washington State high school. 3. Has a high school or College/University GPA of at least a Strong preference for students pursuing teaching with an interest in teaching foreign languages. Mary C Pirrung Endowed Scholarship Amount Awarded: $1,000 $1,200 Purpose of the Award: to provide support for teacher education students in either bachelor's or master's degrees 1. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must be enrolled in a teacher education program at Seattle University. 2. Preference will be given to candidates interested in reading and literacy.

3 Martinez Foundation Fellowship Amount Awarded: Varies Purpose of the Award: To recognize outstanding candidates from populations under-represented in educational practices and leadership who would be unable to complete a graduate program in the College of Education at Seattle University without financial support. 1. Compatibility with the mission of the College of Education: "Preparing ethical and reflective professionals for quality service in diverse communities" 2. Evidence of excellence in teaching practices, scholarship, and/or leadership in special education. 3. Evidence of membership in an under-represented group and evidence of financial need. In 2008, Edgar and Holli Martinez launched The Martinez Foundation, which strives to strengthen our communities by providing underserved populations with educational opportunities. The Martinez Foundation helps students of color become the exceptional educators and role models our communities deserve. The Martinez Foundation grants graduate scholarships and/or provides support programs to students of color who are pursuing teaching careers and are committed to equity in education and giving back to their communities. The Martinez Foundation provides support to teachers of color in the SU College of Education s Masters in Teaching (pre-service teacher education) program. Students who receive the Martinez Foundation Scholarship agree to: A. Work as an educator in a Washington State public school with K-12 students, for at least 3 years, preferably longer. If the educator does not teach for a minimum of 3 years, s/he will pay the scholarship back in its entirety. B. Work as an educator in a Washington State public school, in a high-need area, K-12. Fellows will help children in need and focus on closing the achievement gap. High need subject areas are special education, math, and science. High need schools are those with free and reduced lunch of 50% or greater. C. Attend and participate in the annual Martinez Foundation Fellows retreat. For first year Fellows, attendance is mandatory; attendance the second year is strongly encouraged, and beyond is voluntary. The foundation would greatly appreciate attendance in subsequent years. D. Participate in Foundation surveys and/or research inquiries to help the Foundation learn more about teacher education, teacher effectiveness, and how to shape the Fellowship program to recruit and retain future teacher candidates. E. Mandatory participation in professional development seminars, occurring 4-5 times a year, on Saturdays spread over the school year. F. Give permission to the Foundation to promote them as award recipients with their name and biography on Martinez Foundation and College of Education website, press releases, print brochures, and by introducing them at events to which awardees are invited and available to attend. G. Give permission to the Martinez Foundation film them during the program, as deemed appropriate, for educational/promotional videos and allow such videos to be available on the Foundation and College website. H. Meet with Edgar and Holli Martinez (and occasionally, other Foundation supporters) to share the teacher education experience and express appreciation to the Fellowship donors. Often the foundation will host events or gatherings where donors are interested in meeting Martinez Fellows and learning more about their focus and direction in the public school system.

4 How to Apply 1. Scholarship application deadlines are congruent with the MIT application deadline. Fall cohort applications are due February 1 st ; Spring cohort applications are due October 1 st (or as long as the program is accepting applications). While these are the same deadlines as the application to the program, all scholarship materials should be sent directly to the Master in Teaching Office, rather than the Graduate Admissions Office. 2. scholarship materials to the Master in Teaching Office at mit@seattleu.edu. All scholarship applicants must send in the following: a. The completed Application Form and Statement of Financial Need. Only one application is needed, even if you are applying for more than one scholarship. b. For Martinez Foundation Fellowship scholarship only: i. A two-page essay in which you: 1. Describe why you are interested in being a Martinez Fellow and what this award would mean to you, and 2. Describe how your cultural background will impact (or benefit) you as a professional educator. c. Optional for all scholarships: You may include a separate page describing your financial situation or any special circumstances that you would like the review committee to consider in evaluating your need for financial assistance.
