1 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Academic Leadership Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students who have a demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship in financing their education in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Richard L. Slaughter, Associate Dean for Pharmacy and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, began his career at Wayne State University in 1989 as Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice Program. In 2003, he became Assistant Dean for Assessment and Accreditation and was appointed Associate Dean for Pharmacy in He received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati in 1975 and his Master of Science in Hospital Clinical Pharmacy from The Ohio State University in The scholarship is being established by his colleagues, friends and students in recognition of his leadership, dedication and impact on their lives. In his lifetime, Richard Slaughter chose the name and criteria for this fund established in his honor. This fund is established with gifts and pledges totaling $25,000 in memory of Richard Slaughter. $25,000
2 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS ENDOWED SUPPORT FUND It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Athletics Endowed Support Fund. This fund is established to support the goals and objectives of the Department of Athletics. From 1993 to 1998, the Department of Athletics established several endowed scholarship funds with unrestricted gifts from various donors, sources and efforts. The provisions for each of the endowments provide the Director of Athletics the authority to repurpose the endowments so that the funds will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education. The director would like to use these funds to establish the Department of Athletics Endowed Support Fund. The Department of Athletics Endowed Support Fund is established through the consolidation of seven endowment funds into one fund. Transfer Amounts /601HJ1P Chuck Peters Endowed Scholarship $20, /601j16 George B. Sherman Endowed Scholarship $18, /601J1K Joe Gembis Endowed Scholarship $16, /601J15 Joel G. Mason Endowed Scholarship $40, /601JT Joseph L. Gualtieri Endowed Scholarship $43, /601J1R Patricia Kent Endowed Scholarship $18, /601J1U Tartar Gridiron Club II Endowed Scholarship $10,594 Total to be transferred $168,658
3 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ANNA KATZ BRENNER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Anna Katz Brenner Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Social Work. Anna Katz Brenner was in the first graduating class of the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in She worked with Drs. Editha and Richard Sterba to identify students to be included in the first class at the school and then went on to write Transference in Casework with them. Subsequently she moved to New York to study with Otto Fenichel and other noted psychoanalysts. Brenner maintained a practice as a psychologist in New York well into her 70s. She chaired the Year of the Child Symposium and developed the original Check-Up for Emotional Health. She lived happily in New York until her death on September 21, Brenner felt that her acceptance into the School of Social Work saved her life. Her scholarship will now create opportunities for students to gain an education leading to a career that is intellectually fulfilling and financially secure. Brenner s hope is that this scholarship will provide that life-saving opportunity for students intellectual development and independence. The fund is established with gifts and pledges totaling $25,000 from the Brenner family. $25,000
4 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LAVOISIER J. CARDOZO, M.D., FACP ENDOWED EDUCATION FUND It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Lavoisier J. Cardozo, M.D., FACP Endowed Education Fund. This fund is established to support scholarship and innovation in medication education within the Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine. Dr. Basim Dubaybo writes: The recognition of Dr. Cardozo s achievement in attaining teaching excellence abounds in the respect of his trainees and his peers who often sought his advice about clinical medicine, medical education, and a host of other matters. Material recognition of his teaching also abounds in numerous awards across broad venues, some of which include the virtual annual awarding of the distinguished teaching award chosen by the house staff, college teaching awards chosen by his peers, Top Doc awards chosen by community physicians, the Claude Pepper award from the state of Michigan, and his election as a fellow to the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh). All of us who were fortunate to enter the sphere of this master educator, of great humility, emerged with a glimpse of the heights they as a physician could reach in the art of medicine and with the inspiration to achieve it. The fund is established with gifts and pledges totaling $25,000 from various donors, given in memory of Lavoisier J. Cardozo. $25,000
5 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DOROTHY (DOLLY) FRIEDMAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Dorothy (Dolly) Friedman Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the College of Education. A good education is the key to a good future. This was the strongly held belief of Dorothy (Dolly) Geselis Friedman, a 1946 graduate of the then Wayne University College of Education. Education and family were two of her most important tenets. This endowment, established by her daughter, is dedicated in memory of Dolly Friedman in the hope that the recipients of the scholarship will carry forward these beliefs in their careers, and will instill and reinforce the importance of a good education in the students whom they teach. The fund is established with a pledge of $25,000 from Barbara Friedman Kohler. $25,000
6 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE GENERAL ATHLETICS SUPPORT FUND (FUND FUNCTIONING AS AN ENDOWMENT) It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the General Athletics Support Fund (Fund Functioning as an Endowment). This fund is established to support the goals and objectives of the Department of Athletics. In 1989, the Department of Athletics established the Vernon K. Gale Memorial Endowed Scholarship and the Frederick A. Mulhauser Endowed Scholarship as funds functioning as endowment. They were established with unrestricted gifts from various donors, sources and efforts. The provisions for each of the endowments provide the Director of Athletics the authority to repurpose the endowments so that the funds will provide the maximum service to the community through the advancement of higher education. The Director of Athletics would like to consolidate these endowments and establish a fund functioning as an endowment to support the goals and objectives of the department. The General Athletics Endowed Support Fund is established through the dissolution and transfer of the funds below. Transfer Amounts /661L13 Vernon K. Gale Memorial Scholarship (Fund Functioning as an Endowment) $20, /661L14 Frederick A. Mulhauser Endowed Scholarship (Fund Functioning as an Endowment) $22,403 Total to be transferred $42,440
7 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NORMAN N. KRIEGER, M.D., ENDOWED LECTURE IN GERIATRIC MEDICINE It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Norman N. Krieger, M.D., Endowed Lecture in Geriatric Medicine. The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarly lectures on the subject of geriatric medicine which provides the Continuing Medical Education credits required of physicians to maintain licensing. Norman N. Krieger received his M.D. from the University of Michigan in June 1956 and completed his residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He has practiced medicine in Milford since December 1960 and has been on staff at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital since its opening. Dr. Krieger was appointed Chief of Staff in June 1987 and was named Physician of the Year in In the words of Dr. Krieger, The growing geriatric population consists of individuals with unique medical needs. Only through continued research and discussions can we develop the specialized medical care required and deserved by these fine patients. The mission of the Norman N. Krieger, M.D., Endowed Lecture in Geriatric Medicine is to enhance the knowledge of physicians in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the geriatric population; expose physicians to cutting edge research related to the treatment and prevention of diseases of the elderly; and, provide an opportunity to enhance the knowledge of other health care providers in the prevention, diagnosis and treatments affecting the geriatric population. The fund is established with a gift from the Carls Endowment Trust. $1,270,000
8 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DR. STEVEN E. LIPSHULTZ FUND (FUND FUNCTIONING AS AN ENDOWMENT) It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Dr. Steven E. Lipschultz Fund (Fund Functioning as an Endowment). The purpose of this fund is to support the research of Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz in the School of Medicine. This fund has followed Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz throughout his career to support his research in pediatric cardiology. The fund is established for the support of his research during his tenure at Wayne State University and will remain at Wayne State in the event of his retirement. Should Dr. Lipshultz leave Wayne State for another institution, Wayne State agrees to transfer the funds to the new institution. The fund is established with a gift of $605,297 from the University of Miami. $605,297
9 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ROBERT L. RYAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP (FUND FUNCTIONING AS AN ENDOWMENT) It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Robert L. Ryan Endowed Scholarship (Fund Functioning as an Endowment). This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students who have a demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship in financing their education in the Mike Ilitch School of Business. Robert Bob Ryan received a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering in 1966 from Wayne State University. He was inducted into the Engineering Hall of Fame in Ryan began his career as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, and subsequently moved to Citibank as a vice president. He then joined Union Texas Petroleum Corporation in 1982, with increasing responsibilities first as treasurer, then controller, and finally vice president of finance and chief financial officer. In 1993, Ryan moved to Medtronic, Inc., a leading medical technology company, as senior vice president and chief financial officer responsible for treasury, tax, controllership, internal audit, investor relations and corporate development. He retired from that position in Ryan was inducted into the Financial Executives International Hall of Fame in He serves as a member of several boards of directors. The fund is established by President Wilson with a $50,000 unrestricted gift from Robert L. Ryan. $50,000
10 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ELOISE WHITTEN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF LENA BIVENS AND JUANITA NEWTON It is recommended that the Board of Governors approve the establishment of the Eloise Whitten Endowed Scholarship in honor of Lena Bivens and Juanita Newton. This scholarship fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Social Work. Eloise C. Whitten is establishing an endowed scholarship in the School of Social Work as a memorial tribute to community activists and committed Detroiters Lena Bivens and Juanita Newton. The fund is established with a gift of $25,000 from Eloise Whitten. $25,000
