1 Illinois Education Foundation Scholarship The Illinois Education Foundation (IEF)Signature Scholarship is designed to provide financial, academic and student support to low-income, high-potential community college students. IEF scholarships combine "last dollar" financial assistance along with a full set of academic support services - including mentoring, tutoring and academic advising - to empower more Illinois college students to achieve their degrees and reach their full potential. Award Amount: The IEF scholarship provides last dollar financial assistance which covers the remaining balance of tuition and fees, if any, after financial aid has been applied. IEF Scholars also receive a need-based stipend award of up to $750 per semester to cover books and supplies. Olive-Harvey College DOMM Book Scholarship The purpose of the DOMM Book Scholarship is to assist deserving students pursuing any associates degree or vocational certificate. 2 Marilyn Casey Scholarship Fund Established in February 2005, Marilyn Casey a former nurse purposed this fund to assist students pursuing a degree in a health related field at an Illinois community college. Scholarship monies are to be used to defray educational costs while enrolled at City Colleges. Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center Olive-Harvey College Seabury Scholarship Fund The Seabury Foundation is a family foundation that funds projects in the areas of education, social services, health, conservation, and the arts. Particular emphasis is placed on programs that nurture strong family relationships, promote individual self-sufficiency, and encourage civic participation. The Foundation seeks to improve access of all persons to the education, services, and resources that will support them in living secure, productive, and creative lives. The Seabury Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 to assist mature students continue their education by enrolling in college following GED completion. Scholarship monies are to be used to defray educational costs while enrolled at Kennedy-King College. Award Amount: Up to $1,500 per semester Application Deadline: August 31 Illinois Health Improvement Association Scholarship The Illinois Health Improvement Association Scholarship, which is funded each year by a grant from the Illinois Community College System Foundation, provides financial assistance to deserving students enrolled in healthcare programs that provide direct medical care to individual patients. Scholarship monies may be applied toward tuition, fees, books, study guides or other expenses directly related to the heath field curricula while enrolled at the City Colleges of Chicago. 3 Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center Olive-Harvey College Aspire a Mas Scholarship Fund The Aspire a Mas Scholarship Fund was established in 2002 by the cooperative efforts of Richard J. and the CompuCredit Corporation of Atlanta GA. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to deserving Hispanic/Latino students. Scholarship monies are to be used to defray educational costs while enrolled at or the Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute. Award Amount: Two $250 awards per year. Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute Kathryn Lenihan Book Scholarship Fund The Kathryn Lenihan Scholarship Fund was named to honor Kathryn Lenihan, former Dean of Students at Richard J.. The purpose of the fund is to provide book scholarships for students enrolled at Richard J. Daley College or at West Side Technical Institute (WSTI). Scholarship monies are to be used to defray the cost of books (text books, reference books or workbooks) as outlined in the syllabus of a course in which the applicant is enrolled. Award Amount: Varies Application Deadline: March 1 st Washburne Culinary Institute Arturo Velasquez Scholarship Fund A towering figure in Chicago s great Mexican-American community, Arturo Velasquez was a dedicated family man, a father of four wonderful children, a committed husband to his wife of seventy-two years, a highly successful businessman and entrepreneur, and a highly respected community leader. Although he did not have much formal education himself, Mr. Velasquez always understood the importance and value of a good education. He strongly encouraged the education of his children, he served as a Trustee of the City Colleges of Chicago for ten years, and he was a vigorous advocate for education in the Latino community. Throughout his life, Mr. Velasquez worked hard, became a lifelong learner and an educated man, achieved great success, and gave back to the community. He served as a role model to many and paved the way so that others might achieve. The Arturo Velasquez Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance for deserving students enrolled at the Arturo Velasquez Institute. Scholarship monies are to be used to defray educational costs (tuition, fees, or books). In rare cases, scholarship funds may be used as matching funds (maximum $250 one-time scholarship) to pay a prior balance at the Arturo Velasquez Institute if that will make it possible for the applicant to re-enroll in classes. In rare cases, scholarship funds may be used as a One-Time Matching Grant to pay a prior balance on the student s financial account. If approved, the scholarship will match the payment made by the student up to $250. After the grant is applied, the student s account must result in a $0 balance for the semester requested. Presidential scholarships may also be awarded to a Kennedy-King, Dawson or Washburne graduating honor student (full-time student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher) who is transferring to a senior institution (awards paid directly to the senior institution.) Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship Established through the will of Jack Kent Cooke in 2000, The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation. Mr. Cooke believed education was a lifelong pursuit. Thus, the purpose of The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program is to award approximately 50 scholarships each year to students attending community colleges or two-year institutions in the US and planning to transfer to four-year institutions. Each award will cover a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expense, required fees, and books for the final two to three years of the baccalaureate degree. Every Scholarship varies, depending on the cost of attendance and other scholarships or grants received. Olive-Harvey College Florence Ballenger Scholarships Florence Coles Ballenger, a former faculty member at, grew up in Decatur, Illinois. The 1925 alumna of Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (now Eastern Illinois University) always felt that education was the key to everything. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University, she taught in Oak Park, Chicago s Wilson Junior College (now ) and St. Petersburg (Florida College) retiring at age 70. However, she continued to volunteer as an English tutor. The scholarship provides financial support to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to civic service. The scholarship is credited to a balance in the student's account resulting from tuition charges, fees or the cost of books and supplies, after all federal and state awards have been applied. The scholarship is awarded 7
8 annually and covers two (2) academic semesters provided academic standards are maintained and there is a financial need. Award Amount: Up to $2,500 per semester (based upon availability of funds) Application Deadline: Fall Semester: Last Friday in June Spring Semester: Last Friday in November **Summer assistance is for graduates ONLY Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center Scholarship Fund The Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center (HPVEC) Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships for deserving students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their studies at HPVEC. Scholarship awards are generally allocated as partial tuition rather than full scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded primarily to existing students to be applied towards current or future tuition or, in rare cases, as matching funds (maximum $250 one-time scholarship) to pay a prior balance at HPVEC. Award Amount: $100 to $1,500, depending upon the student s need and the availability of funds. Application Deadline: Deadlines will be established based on starting dates of programs and scholarships will be awarded throughout the year. Local 1600, Soglin/McBride Memorial Scholarship Fund The Local 1600, Soglin/McBride Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial assistance to students with excellent academic records and active community/school involvement. The fund was originally established in memory of Albert Soglin who was a fulltime faculty member in the math department at HWC. Later the Thomas McBride scholarship was created in memory of Thomas McBride who was a HWC student. Award Amount: Varies from $300 to $1,000 for the academic year. United Center Neighborhood Grant This grant is provided by and is available for qualified incoming students who have graduated from an accredited High School or successfully completed their GED credential. Eligible awardees must maintain fulltime enrollment status during the award period. The grant has a maximum value of $2,280 for an academic year, with $1,140 payable to the student s account for the fall and the spring terms. The grant is NOT available for the summer semester. The grant is renewable for six semesters; however, students must fill out the RENEWAL VERIFICATION FORM EACH SEMESTER for continuation of the grant. Additionally, students must maintain the required grade point average to qualify for continued eligibility (see conditions of award). The evaluation of the applications and selection of the recipient is the sole responsibility of the MALCOLM X COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE. All decisions of the Committee are final, unless authorized by the President, Executive Director, or Dean of Student Services. 10 Dr. Randall Johnson M. Johnson Scholarship for the Arts The Randall M. Johnson Scholarship for the Arts is designed to assist students who are interested in pursuing a fulltime degree and/or career in the Humanities or the Fine Arts. The Dr. Randall M. Johnson Scholarship is for academic achievement and provides a $500 scholarship. Award Amount: $ Award Spring Term Only Application Deadline: Applications must be received by November 1 st Phillips Morris Careers in Teaching Scholarship The Philip Morris Careers in Teaching Scholarship is intended for students who are pursuing a degree in K-12 teaching. The amount of the scholarship will be $1000 for each eligible semester (summer semesters are not eligible). A recipient can receive the scholarship for two academic years, but must submit documentation that he/she has passed the Basic Skills Test before the scholarship can be renewed for the second academic year. The scholarship funds will be applied to the recipient s outstanding balance with the college and any remaining credit balance will be refunded to the recipient. Applicants must submit all application materials to the Financial Aid Office by September 15th of the academic year. Application Procedure: New Applicants - Complete the CCC Scholarship Application (available on the CCC scholarships website) - Submit a typed, one page essay that answers the question, Why are you pursuing a career in teaching? - Submit two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a teacher/professor and one letter must be from an organization or church with which the student has completed volunteer service. Recommenders can use the CCC Recommendation Form - Have the appropriate FAFSA with the School Code on file and have submitted all required documents to the Financial Aid Office 2nd year Applicants - 2nd year applicants do not need to complete the application process again. 11 This is a student scholarship program that supports two important goals: 1) recruiting and facilitating minority and under-represented groups in their pursuit of entering the paralegal profession and 2) students receive scholarship funding to help support the achievement of their educational goals. Award Amount: $500 - $3,000 Application Deadline: March 1 st Washburne Culinary Institute Chicago Police and Fire Training Academy Scholarship Eligible awardees must maintain enrollment in a degree granting program during the award period. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition and fees associated with college credit course work. The scholarship may be used in the fall and the spring terms only. The scholarship is not available for the summer semester. The scholarship is renewable for six consecutive semesters; however, students must apply each semester (by completing the scholarship renewal process in the Student Services Office) and maintain the required grade point average to qualify for continued eligibility. The Chicago Police and Fire Academy Training Scholarship are tuition and fee-based scholarships. Students whose tuition expense is met through the Pell Grant, Monetary Award Program (MAP) or other financial awards are not eligible to receive this scholarship. Students with remaining need after financial aid funds have been applied will have the difference of their applicable charges paid by the CPFTA Scholarship. Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center Olive-Harvey College Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute Dawson Tech Institute CCC Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Scholarship The CCC Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) Scholarships were established by a donor with a specific interest in the success of CNA students. The scholarship is designed to support CNA students as they begin a pathway in the healthcare field. The scholarship represents the desire to succeed in education, a commitment to this success, and the drive to improve one s life through education in a high demand career field and support entry into a workforce with great potential for growth. Our state-approved training will introduce students to one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of nursing assistants is projected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through the year The scholarship provides financial support to students who have a passion to interact with people in a positive, caring manner while providing quality care. The Certified Nursing Assistant program provides participants with the training necessary to take the Illinois State competency exam to become certified as a Nurse Assistant. Training includes classroom and laboratory instruction, as well as clinical experiences within a hospital or nursing home which qualifies the student for both home and institutional employment. The program is supported by Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds, which provide training funds for unemployed or underemployed people. All applicants will be required to register with a local WIA provider to assess their qualification for WIA funds. WIA applications must be completed at least 6 to 8 weeks before registration to allow for processing time.
