3 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ARTHUR L. JOHNSON URBAN PERSPECTIVES ENDOWED LECTURE SERIES It is recommended that the Board of Governors establish the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives Endowed Lecture Series. The Urban Perspectives Lecture Series was created in 1992 by the Wayne State University Alumni Association, and in 1995 it was named to honor civil rights leader Dr. Arthur L. Johnson upon his retirement as vice president for university relations at Wayne State University. The Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives lecture series offers alumni, friends and members of the campus and greater community an opportunity to hear thoughtful and interesting commentaries on a wide range of subjects, such as politics, business, economics, law and the arts, by outstanding speakers from both the public and private sectors. Lectures take place at Alumni House in the center of the WSU campus, and there is no charge to attend. Speakers represent the highest ideals embodied in the life and work of Dr. Johnson and are leaders on the local or national scene who have an important message to share with the Detroit community. In 2006, Mildred Matlock and Don and Mary Ann Allen created this endowment to support the costs of the Lecture Series. The fund has now reached the $25,000 threshold.
4 ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EDWARD L. KLARMAN, M.D. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP It is recommended that the Board of Governors establish the Edward L. Klarman, M.D. Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship fund will recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress, and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the School of Medicine. Edward L. Klarman, M.D. writes the following to the recipients of this scholarship: When I graduated from high school in Detroit, I certainly knew I was going on to college. The only question was which college. And the only answer was Wayne State University. The advantage for me was that I could continue to live at home and take the bus down to the campus. For my family, it made tremendous economic sense. The same considerations applied when it came to medical school. Going to Wayne meant that I was still able to live at home and take a bus or car pool with classmates to school AND get a great education at the same time. For me, medicine has been a wonderful and satisfying profession. And I was fortunate that my career was financially rewarding as well, which allows me to help deserving medical students like you with this scholarship assistance. I hope that your career will prove equally fulfilling and that some day you will be in a position to give back to our medical school and help others to continue a legacy of educational excellence.
